It feels like home! It has been 7 years since I danced forrealsies and took a class. Growing up I was heavily involved in colorguard/winterguard where it was very contemporary/ballet technique focused. Since moving away for college and doing adult things, I forgot about my love for dance. Thank the dance angels I found Alonzo King LINES. I was twiddling my thumbs on class pass and found this spot and signed up for the Contemporary Fusion class with Jenelle. Love love loved it! Jenelle was the sweetest and grooviest instructor and she made all people of all experience feel welcomed. It was such a nice class to ease into dance. I've been taking classes at AKL for almost 4 years and highly recommend it to dancers of all levels - total beginners to professionals! I had been a ballet dancer for 13+ years, competed nationally and performed with Moscow Ballet before -- that being said, I did not become a professional dancer after college and honestly stopped dancing for many years afterwards. So when my coworkers who have never done ballet before suggested we all take a ballet class together at Alonzo King LINES, I was excited but also nervous: what level? What class? Which teacher? Do I even have ballet shoes anymore?! We decided to take the Basic Ballet class with Sally because I figured I didn't need Intro to Dance and my coworkers thought maybe that would be a good medium for our differing skill levels. Beginner Ballet might've been too hard for them so we settled for Basic! (BAEsic...lolz) Sally is such a sweet teacher! There were definitely varying levels of skill in that class but overall, it was really fun. I do think that Basic Ballet was too hard for my coworkers with no ballet experience (we were already doing pirouettes and none of them have ever been taught how to do one) so I would honestly suggest Intro for true newbies. Basic was definitely too easy for me with my 13+ years of dance experience (especially the barre routines but it did help me focus more on fine-tuning technique and less on flexibility) but it was just enough for me to feel like I could try the across-the-floor exercises comfortably without getting bored. I love coming here to dance. I've really only taken hip hop classes here. The check in system is super easy. You can sign up online. The building is old and funky- in fact that is one of my favorite things about the space. I love looking out the windows in the upstairs studios- it feels like I am in another time and place. They also have an old school elevator with an elevator attendant who takes you up. The classes and instructors and great. It's not usually super crowded. read more

Lines is one of my favorite dance studios of all times! As an avid dancer in the Bay Area, yes there are a lot of choices, but not much relating to dance as an art rather than competition or ballet oriented. At Lines, they give you the inspiration and you can tell that the students actually like dance. I've been with Lines for three years now, and although it is an hour long BART ride, I come here every time. Also, very photogenic studios! :) I did the Teens (Session I) Summer Intensive 2015 and 2016. Currently, I am taking the Teens at Lines classes and the regular classes. The summer intensives are really great because everyday it is different faculty, teaching different classes. In addition, its not only dance, but also classes like Gyro-tonics (which are super expensive by itself) and classes where dancers discuss stereotypes and other dance related subjects. In addition, working on choreography is super fun, but also really tiring because you really need to motivate yourself. I took my first pas de deux (partnering) at the intensive. I'm not the best at pointe, but Arturo made us to really hard movements at the beginning, even though it was a lot of people's first time. It actually benefited me a lot, because it made me realize I could do it even though I didn't get the basics down. Teens at Lines, is another story. The class is significantly easier than the Summer Intensive, but since its a smaller class, it pushes you more. Although I don't want to be a professional dancer, Lines is still an amazing place to train, even for recreation. I will say that there is a big difference between the adult classes (Intermediate/Advance) and Teens. The teachers are usually more hands-on and correct you more in the Teens classes. I think this process is pretty vital in improving in dance, so find a teacher that is willing to give you that attention! Also, there's a class for everyone! I've taken two of Kathy Mata's classes and they are fairly challenging for me. I studied ballet and tap from K-6th and was not the best student - I was not great with vocabulary and so I always tended to just copy whoever was in front of me. Flash forward twenty years and here I am kinda in the same spot...but Kathy made me feel welcomed and provided encouragement at just the right time. She is quirky and charming and such a conscientious teacher - she found me on FB after class and made very detailed mentions to what I did in class. I couldn't believe it - she provided personal attention in a class of forty. What a dedicated teacher. Her class is about a little over an hour of barre work, then center, and across the floor work. I found the barre work to be fast, because the combination are provided mostly verbally, but Kathy is happy to show you and "mark it" if people ask. The classes are accompanied by a live pianist. I've taken one or two adult ballet classes in other cities and this is the first time I've decided to come back. Student skill set ranges, which is really cool. I am very impressed that her students, even if they look like they are beginners, still know what they are doing and they all take their training seriously. Alonzo King is a serious dance company and school and you will get high class training here. Funny story: my first time here, the elevator dude (yes, there is an elevator dude, a super hipster guy who operates the elevator since it's so "vintage" - my god, how SF) must have thought I was one of the middle school students there to audition, so I got dropped off on the fifth floor and saw a hundred dancers in the hall, milling around and waiting for their call time. I was like, "OMFGGGG is this the class?" I almost ran out of there. Thankfully I poked around a little more and realized that the check-in desk was one floor up and that my class was in another studio. read more

Cons: - Adult ballet classes at this studio are the worst. Unless you're an advanced dancer, you should stay away. The class descriptions and the levels mean nothing, every class is advanced. I've attempted 3 different times to find the right level. The same class with two different teachers could be dramatically different levels. I truly like this shitty dirty ballet academy. It has that 70's NYC ambiance, noisy, stinky, old and with odd characters around you. 7th and market is just fantastic. Love it. The SF I remember growing up. Except that there are no cheap hookers anymore. Sorry guys. Teachers are usually friendly with the occasional drama-queen one who enjoy scolding jerks like myself. Instead, I wish they have at least one Russian style teacher of the former USRR to get scolded properly for improper technique. Whiplash in hand!... I was new to ballet and am now much more experienced, but I had a really bad experience in Kathy Mata's beginning class. It wasn't directly her fault but I would like her to be aware of the issue so that maybe she can help new dancers in the future. It was my first day in the introductory beginner class and it was crowded. I was confused, but other teachers such as Erik Wagner and Charles Torrres had told me to expect that. During the very beginning of the barre section, a woman who was not Kathy Mata but was perhaps another instructor at Lines and was also taking class started saying something to me from across the room. I think she may be the busybody type and was trying too hard to be helpful. I couldn't understand what she was saying, so I walked over to her. As I moved away from the barre, two other dancers took my spot and there was no where else to go. My heart sunk. What had started as normal confusion turned into panic and a feeling of exclusion. I left the class and never got my money back. If only that bizarre woman had tried not to be "helpful." If Kathy knows who that woman is, I hope she can remind her not to be helpful. The busybody woman was white, short, heavy-set and seemed to be somebody who works or worked at Lines. read more

Wouldn't know what I'd do w/o SFDC... A great selection of dance forms, a ton of classes throughout the day, unbeatable cost (esp in bulk), and fab teachers, accompanists, and staff. They're open almost all the time, except for Thanksgiving, X'mas, and New Years day or something crazy like that. So don't worry about w/drawals or anxiety during holidays. They're AMAZING! Teachers and classes are a matter of personal preference IMO -- check out their bios online or on the wall-of-teachers when you sign-in. You can PM me if you're interested in ballet stuff, but definitely check it out for yourself and ask around in dressing rooms. and BernaDiva's review for details! They really deserve all my stars, but there's the building and cleanliness issue for me, which is totally not SFDC's fault. The maintenance of the Odd or Old Fellows buildings is a little on the slow-side -- it took a very long time for the bathrooms to get an upgrade (though I'm clueless about bureaucracy, funds, etc. But thank you for the new functional 'oilets!) Also the fact that people walk into studios with street shoes makes me cringe after marinating on the floor... but I try not to let it bother me. I absolutely love the adult classes that are open for anyone to drop-in. However, you must do so at your own risk. Not much of a concern for modern but in ballet, lack of proper class etiquette can be dangerous to everyone else. Spacing and "birding" during traveling combinations are where the hazards are high. So finally come to a intermediate Horton class. I havent been too in so long. I was meaning to take some classes at lines on a consistent level but always other obligations, such as work and family. I've never written a review on lines until today. I've had good experiences until Aug 1st 2018 when the Horton intermediate had a sub. I decided to change my class pass option , with front desk of lines permition, took the advanced beginning hip hop class. Things seemed to be going ok, to do so. I walked in and immediately felt an energy shift from the instructor -Leslie. I dont know what people heard and would fix they mouth to believe, but her professionalism in my eyes was questionable. I know dancers have a thick skin, but dont try and come at me like you know me and cue to assumptions by sayin sly comments. I left it alone cause I get it from a lot of people who seem to know me from this mass rumor mill evolved around me. But, what she said was referenced to a white washed comment, which is one of the rumors stated about me. I'm sayin to myself and out loud, dont mention what you dont know about. On me or whatever, if it was weird behavior I would see her stating something on the spot, but honestly, there was nothing that serious to mention something you heard from somebody else. I felt her insecurities arising , which made the energy between us bad. You have no idea what I'm going through and how I grew up. The negative comments flying out her mouth should of just been directed towards instructing the dance choreography. She a young teach so I just let the childish banter be what that was. I'm confident in who I am despite rumors. I hopped she would of been professionally and let her choreography speak and not her thoughts on me. I told Kathy Mata I wasnt coming to classes due to school, but I had work obligations in the end. But if o was to decide to come back to Leslie's class that type of behavior shouldnt be acceptable. On an adult, dancer and teacher level. Overall, Leslie's class was good and the lines classes I have takin in ballet, other hip hop and forms of dance classes have been great. (For instance, while waiting for rides home after class, I've witnessed gun exchanges, fights, and drugs galore.) *The studios are not well maintained and the floors are filthy and uneven. My ballet tights were covered in dirt after one class. *Staff is unfriendly and grumpy. Also, there is an incredibly inefficient way of checking people in - they interrupt every class to do a roll call.... which takes time away from class (esp with the point below) *The ballet classes get packed. There doesn't seem to be any sort of cut off. There were 40 people in a small studio for class the other day. *Most frustrating is that the class leveling is not at all close to what is on the website - different teachers have different definitions of each level so you never know what you're going to get. I REALLY love coming here. I take Micaya's intermediate/advanced hip-hip dance class every Wednesday and I'm always blown away. AKLDC has a great range of different dance classes in varied forms/styles and their sign up/check in/sign in process is simple and efficient for a large studio housing several classes at a time. You can drop into any class for $15 per class or get a discount package that run during seasons. Some of these discount packages run as low as $78 for 6 classes to $228 for 24 classes. Packages are for Winter/Spring, Summer and Fall. Not many cons for this place other than the location being in a bit of a 'sketch' area. I HIGHLY recommend AKLDC and Micaya if you are at all interested in dance. read more

Let me just say: I used to be in kick-ass shape. Like, ridiculously tight, toned, can-wear-anything-and-look-hotter-then-you shape. And that was because I did ballet. A lot. I was never going to become a professional dancer, but I loved doing it, I was serious about it, and I had an amazing, incredibly inspiring teacher (and by "inspiring", I mean he thwacked people with his cane and hurled tear-inducing insults - which inspired me to not fuck up again and incur his wrath. But all that came from a place of love). Then I went away to college and everything fell apart. Up until Sunday, I hadn't taken a class in 8 years. And while I haven't turned into a complete schlub, I am no longer at peak physical form. And more than that, I haven't been truly challenged and motivated by anything workout-y in years (I did have a good run with yoga, but it's just not the same). Enter Basic Ballet with Kathy Mata. Not exactly basic - I wouldn't recommend this for someone new to ballet. But it was a fantastic reintroduction to dance. Frustrating, because I remembered what it looked and felt like to do the exercises properly - and now, my body can barely remember what a sissone is, much less perform one. But all that will change. Because as before, I am inspired. The studio's environment is professional. Kathy is extremely professional, and extremely detail-oriented: she'll notice the incorrect alignment of your ribcage and you will change it. Ballet is all about these tiny details in technique - and I'm confident that by training here, I'll get mine back. And the quarter-bounceable ass. I am determined to get that back too. read more

My 200th Review!!! *** Stunning. I walked into this modern chamber of performing arts and had a blank canvas on which to throw my thoughts onto. By the end of the show, I can say that my blank page was speckled with vibrant images of what was a gorgeous display of human communication. I am in no way a follower of ballet, but this performance was awe inspiring and down right beautiful. Each piece was perfectly choreographed, and it was amazing to see just how much movement can communicate the story line without a single word uttered. The dancers are phenomenal. Elegant, strong, and defined grace. The hall is intimate, yet very modern, and if you have a free night in San Francisco, take the time to see this dance troupe. Cost? Totally reasonable and comparable to all other studios in the area. Live music accompaniment? Yes and one of the reasons for getting 4 stars vs 3. There is an AMAZING musician named Dennis that plays all originals and switches off between playing the piano and violin for the different combinations. Dancing for his music alone is worth every penny of the class! Even when someone other than Dennis is playing, they all seem very in tune with the tempo necessary for the dancers and play unoriginal, fun music to dance to. A+++++++ Classes for everyone? Maybe. I would say that LINES requires more background in dance than some of the other adult classes... and even if the class itself isn't rigorous, the adult classes seem to draw a younger crowd that's more knowledgeable as a whole. This has its benefits, but if you are trying to find a class with a warm and competitive-free environment, there are better places (ODC). Good timing/class schedule? Yes, definitely. LINES offers almost all levels of ballet class every day - after normal business hours. Location: SKETCHY area! I have definitely watched someone urinate outside my car as well as an overt drug deal take place. Not the best studio if you have kids.... The ballet classes here are awesome for first time ballet dancers. The ordering of ballet classes: 1) Intro to Ballet (meant for people who have never taken ballet) 2) Basic Ballet (one "level" up from Intro) 3) Beginning Ballet (one "level" up from Basic) And so on to Intermediate Etc. If you've never taken ballet I don't recommend you start with Beginning Ballet- kind of a misnomer but at least "Intro" and "Basic" sound directionally accurate. (vs. ODC studio descriptions which were confusing to me at first) I discovered this center and these classes through Class Pass and now I just pay to take these classes when I can. Class Pass limits you to max 3 classes per studio per month. I've loved these classes so much that I pay out of pocket now. Location is at 7th and Market. Not the safest block so please be careful! I was visiting SF for the weekend, so I thought, sure, why not take a ballet class while in town? I surfed Yelp and thought LINES was the best prospective spot, and then when I asked my regular teacher (former principal with SF Ballet) for a recommendation for where to take a drop-in class, the first word out of his mouth was 'LINES' so I knew this was the place! Walking here was a little sketchy, sure, but I already knew the area and expected that. Just walk with purpose and headphones on and people won't bother you. The elevator was super cool with the grates and the elevator operator! The guy at the front was very efficient getting me signed up for my drop-in class and I was ready to go in no time. The class - I took the beginning ballet class with Kathy, since the only other class at that time was the intermediate class. She was really wonderful - she introduced herself to me at the beginning, and actually took the time to give me lots of corrections even though I was just visiting from another city. I could really feel the love that she has for her students - you could tell she knows everyone and really cares about them. Besides that, she gave lots of constructive corrections and tips for everyone. It was an extremely positive and wonderful (and waaaaay harder than I expected!!) class. I know that whenever I am in SF in the future, I will make time to visit LINES - this was a really special experience! This is specifically for Kathy Mata, who teaches ballet 7 days a week at sfdc: Kathy is an awesome teacher who really loves ballet. Her combinations from barre to centre are created to build on a few certain things that she wants everyone to focus and work on for the class. Her students range from beginner to advanced and Kathy will tailor the level of difficulty based on who shows up to some degree. Generally though, i've noticed Mon, Tue & Fri are usually more advanced than Wed & Thu. Mon is pointe-centric, Tue is turns-centric & Fri has the longest grand allegro combinations from the corner (b/c its 2 hrs, perhaps?) Once you start showing up regularly, Kathy will start to gently give you your own, personal items to work on. I can see why Kathy has students who have stayed with her for decades! She pushes each student at their own pace, level and style. Kathy works 365 days a year - when sfdc closes for a few holidays (mostly around christmas/new years) Kathy continues to teach at other locations in SF. Kathy is a great option if you're looking for a steady ballet class that can fit into a shifting/crazy life. read more

I've been taking the Adults Absolute Beginner Ballet Workshop Series with Lizel for 3 months now and I love it. I had 0 ballet experience when I started taking classes here, and now I feel pretty confident in the ballet basics. I started at Level 1 and have am now taking Level 2 for the second session in a row because I think it is still challenging. The Absolute Beginner Workshop Series go up to Level 3. After that I think there are Intermediate Workshops that you can attend. I originally was inspired to try ballet classes after attending a few shows at the SF Ballet, and now I appreciate what the professionals can do even more! I know that Alonzo King Lines offers other dance classes of all types including Bollywood, jazz, modern, hip hop, and even some pilates. They have a $5 All You Can Dance Sunday once in a while where you can try unlimited 30 minute classes with all different teachers in all different styles. I did that once and it was a blast, but very crowded. read more

Just wanted to update my review... I am still going to Kathy's ballet class and loving it. To my amazement, since taking her class just once a week, my back has evened out in appearance quite a bit (I have a mild case of scoliosis...no crazy bends, but twists) I feel more balanced, healthier and stronger. Kathy has had multitude of personal physical challenges herself and it is amazing to here her stories and how she copes with them. She knows about how human bodies work, she pays attention to physical challenges you might have, and she helps you overcome it. I strongly encourage anyone with back problems to try coming to her class.... although her "beginner" class is not beginner at all and you need to know all the ballet basics... so if you are a complete novice, I suggest you try the "intro" class first for a while. Anyway, encouraged by my own progress, I started going to D's Hip Hop class as well. I used to do hip hop for a few years in NYC and missed it dearly. His class is a completely different vibe (obviously) than classic ballet, and involves a lot of stretching and crunches for warm up. Every single time I've taken his class, I break a good sweat, I feel pumped and sexy, I get a work out, and I am sore the next day. I do need to be careful about crunches because of my back... and the last couple of times, I have been noticing that my back did get a bit spazzed out after hip hop... this may or may not be a good thing for my body so I am going to monitor myself and see how it goes. Having said that, I love the hip hop class. D is so fun and friendly and the choreography is so spunky. Definitely energizing. If you love calorie burning booty shaking and you love hip hop, definitely, try his class out! read more

Was in a class of around 32 people and it didn't feel too stuffy Classes: This is only for Kathy Mata's Beginner adult class. Kathy is an amazing teacher who is able to give corrections in spite of class size. She keeps everyone motivated and at the same time entertained with her sparkling personality. I feel it's not exactly a "Beginner" class. Ms. Kathy herself describes it as Beginner/Intermediate. I been wanting to try this dance studio out for a great workout and my love for dancing! Finally had the chance, last weekend to try out the Hip-Hop adv class with D! He's a great instructor and I had so much fun!!! I was pretty skeptical at first, since I haven't danced in so long. However, it turned out better than I thought. The level was great, fairly easy but also challenging. The studio reminded me of a studio you would see in the movies or in New York. The style of dance was also like the ones you would see in music videos! Definitely would go here again, maybe to try out their ballet class next time! 4 stars because of the location, traffic, and parking sucks. I rented a studio for my bday party. Was told that normally they don't allow hip hop or other types of music at their studio but allowed it for our group because our rental was a one time deal. We were up on the 3rd floor in room 5- huge space that can easily accommodate 25-30. Downside is that there is nooooo ventilation so we were all dripping from just warm ups. They also don't allow any food or drinks in the studio- which we weren't told about since our contract was done through a third party, party planner over the phone. I went to the $5 All you can dance event today. What an incredible idea! This was amazing! 4 hours- 16 different classes 30 minutes each, and you can sample as few or as many as you like! Some choices were Ballet, Modern, Bollywood, Hip Hop, Chinese, Flamenco, Jazz & Feldenkrais. They had both beginner and intermediate- folks were free to bounce between levels and classes as they chose. Fantastic offering! This event made me realize how much I love the Bay Area. =) read more

By far the BEST dance school in San Francisco. I routinely take modern and ballet classes here. The levels are appropriately separated and the instructors are beyond knowledgeable in their art and teaching methods. I rent space for my own rehearsals and the front desk staff are always on point with their studio recommendations. The one time one of my rehearsal bookings was cancelled I was reimbursed with addition time on a different day. The location is like a dance oasis in the urban jungle of SF, a real gem! read more
