Took the castle tour and on our way back, most eating places nearby were closed but there was a crowd eating here so we dropped in. Fun atmosphere with lots of seating outside. Lots of flies but you'll just have to deal with it. Everything we ordered was great. Staff is friendly and helpful. We ordered the venison, red deer, wild boar dish which was great and fun to try. The salad was light and refreshing with fresh ingredients. The pork knuckle was cooked well with perfectly crunchy skin. The vegetable soup was very good. Fantastic stop on the way up to Neuschwanstein Castle. There are several eating areas nearby and I expected them to be cheap and touristy, but this place was an absolute win. We ate lunch here after touring Neuschwanstein castle. They were able to seat our spur of the moment small crowd, get us fed in a timely manner, and the food was delicious! I had the excellent goulash and bread. Our friend had schnitzel and it was better than any I had in Austria. We ordered sweet pancakes and applesauce for dessert, and our friend got apple strudel. In the shopping area below the castles, Alpenstubn is a perfect stop to rest your feet and fill your belly. This is the first place we found with Sauerbraten and this sealed the deal as our pick. My husband really wanted the authentic dish however, across the region, we are told this is a winter dish not served until November. We grabbed a table in the patio and the menu is in both German and English. The waitresses speak English too. I'm not getting much practice as it is not difficult to find someone with sufficient fluency eager to use their English. The food was quick out of the kitchen and very good. The Käsespatzen was a huge portion with a beautiful flavor of roasted onion, topped with crispy onions and chives. My husband said that his sauerbraten was exceptional. Great food, good ambiance. Just what we needed after touring Neuschwanstein Castle. After the rude guy who tossed our audio pieces at us at the castle and the rude man who yelled us for not parking at the right place when trying to get to the castle, the service here seemed ok. My friend got some sort of pork thing with fries. She said it was pretty good. Later we went for ice cream because we couldn't find anywhere else to get real ice cream. This restaurant is connected to a hotel. Their food was good. Staff was very friendly. Food can be very feeling if you order too much however the staff can advise of this as well. The Turkey and rice was definitely amazing! The pancake dish was delicious and a lot. It's definitely enough to share with others. Their Apple strudel was delicious. This place is at the bottom of the hill of the castles. If you don't pay attention you could confuse it with being a shop. Inside is nice and cozy. Bigger than you would think. I have to write a review for this place after an exceptional experience. We were looking for a place to eat after visiting the castle and having walked/hiked an enormous amount that day. We came here for a late lunch because we were turned away elsewhere. We were gestured towards whichever table to sit at and when asked which dish to get-burger or sausage, the waitress told us to get the more expensive dish (hamburger). This is usually a red flag for me. They have a small beer menu-pilsner, hell, etc. The burger came on an interesting black bun. Just ok along with just ok fries. I got the Austrian pasta which are similar to spinach filled ravioli. Good but not great and so very greasy. Served with cheese and tomato. For about $48 US for two for lunch I was not impressed. But it's a tourist area so I suppose that's what you're paying for. read more

Great location, right near the entry point to the castles. The inside is clean and decorated in the old Bavarian fashion. The staff are friendly and kind. The food was nicely portioned and had great flavor. We got salads and schnitzels and both were fresh and hit the spot. A couple call outs on the differences from America to Germany: 1. Speed- they do not come to you quickly after getting menus nor after being clearly done with your meal. You need to flag them down. They have a much longer "hang out" time at restaurants and they don't want to rush you out. 2. Charges/tips- water is not free, you will pay for it and it isn't a glass, it's a small bottle they bring to the table. Also, they aren't a tipping culture. Generally people just round up to the nearest 5. Example: bill is $9 and you give a $10. 3. Language- in large cities, menus are in English and German and people speak English. In smaller towns it's in German and English speakers aren't as frequent. Make sure you have a translation app. read more

We sat outside and it was very pleasant. We ordered side salads and they were delicious. I ordered the roast beef with bread dumpling and sauerkraut. The bread dumpling was like American stuffing which was good. The sauerkraut was a little too sour for my taste. The roast beef was good and the gravy had a little seasoning that I had not had before. It was okay. My wife ordered the pork medallions with spätzle and it was delicious. Our friends ordered the weiner schnitzel and fries. They both loved it. All in all the meal was good for €150. read more

A nice little place near Neuschwanstein castle. We ducked into it and waited out a rainstorm with some ice cream and coffee. They were nice to let us sit for a bit after we finished. Great outdoor seating with heaters on a day when it was a torrential downpour! Amazing food, I thought tourist destination this is going to be overpriced and horrible, but boy was I wrong! The soup was sooo good, full of flavor and served with warm fresh bread. I got the spetzel which is made with the local happy cow cheese; it's very stinky, powerful, and I loved it! It was too much for my husband and I would Recommend sharing as it's very rich. We stayed here in the hotel for an overnight while visiting Schwangau and it was probably the best part of our trip. The hotel room was spotless and cozy, yet impressive. We had a great balcony, with a view of Neuschwanstein - could not have asked for a better place to stay. We decided to eat here for dinner and it was the best food we had on our trip. They had a special pumpkin soup that was so delicious, and the goulash and spaetzle and service was superb. We came back for lunch the next day because we enjoyed it so much. My recommendation if you're eating here - get the Bavarian food, it's what they excel at. After we ate, we recommended it to a few friends also traveling in the area and they all agree as well, some of the best food they had on their whole trip too. The people who work there too were so friendly and welcoming, it really made the experience such a great memory. We'll be back!! read more

For dinner on my first night in the area I ordered the breaded chicken and french fries, and MY GOD the portion was massive! I wish I would have gotten a picture! I can be a very picky eater sometimes, and chicken is the one food that is usually done wrong for me, but the breaded chicken here was so amazing that I nearly ate the whole thing!! I'm also not usually a big french fry eater, but I enjoyed the fries a lot and my mom swore they were the best she's ever had. On the off chance I do order fries I usually have to drown the taste in ketchup, but these fries were so good I didn't need to, which is saying a lot. For dessert I ordered a chocolate ice cream (forgot what it's called, but I remember it was the middle option on the middle page of the menu), and it looked nothing like the picture, nor was it anything I was expecting. The ice cream was freezer burned and the scoop was floating in this watered-down chocolate milk, but again I'm picky so who knows how it really tastes. The following day after hiking up to the Neuschwanstein castle, touring it, walking along the bridge, hiking back down, then touring the other castles, we were absolutely starving so we came back here for dinner again. This time we just ordered some pretzels and an apple strudel for take away. We were told the pretzels would take about 15 mins, but luckily just 10 mins later they brought them out and they were genuinely the freshest pretzels I've had to date. And I've eaten many, MANY pretzels in my day! It was so good I seriously dream about that pretzel lol. Unfortunately we didn't get the chance to eat the strudel, but the portion of it was pretty big too! Overall I highly recommend this place to any tourist looking for a good, hardy meal. I am 99.9% sure I left my kindle on the bed in the sheets. I called the next morning to have the hotel look for it, and it was not found. There is no plausible alternative other than it was stolen by the maid or other staff. I understand that keeping track of my belongings is my responsibility, but that the maid did not turn it in when directly asked about it is thievery. I would not trust this place to stay there ever again. I even had a friend that was there three days later and she stopped by the hotel to ask about it, and they lied to her that it was not found. Literally there is no other way to account for the missing Kindle than the maid took it when she cleaned my room and didn't return it. I was reading it in bed in the morning before I checked out. When I got to my next hotel it was not in my bag. I did not take it out to read in between. The 0.1% chance is aliens. Also, my phone started acting weird after connecting to their (slow) wifi. I think they gave me a virus. We got here with a group and sat for over hour just waiting for our food. Another group sat down an hour after us and we're given there food right away. The waiter was incredibly rude as we checked in on what we ordered, simply using hand motions to dismiss our concerns as we nearly missed our train and sat in hunger. One person in our party got their food over 20 minutes before us, which is incredibly unprofessional. Overall, the food was not bad but surely not worth both the wait and rude service. Had one dinner in the hotel, the service rep(waiter) was extremely impatient and rude- we waited for quite sometime, only asked one question, got very horrible attitude- "come on, i serve 100 tables, u should read and understand what u want to take before talk to me".
