I have two 12 year old indoor cats from the same litter. Cat #1, Male Russian Gray, "Earl" 11lbs Cat #2, Female Tortoiseshell, "Toast" 16lbs Earl is in great shape but Toast...She kind of looks like a TV console table, the kind with cabinets - a big rectangle with little feet sticking out the bottom. We tried everything from diet cat food to making her chase every morsel down the hall. She caught on quick and after a piece or two waited at the end of the hall until we threw the next piece TO her. We decided to stick with the diet food and cross our fingers. We had taken them to a number of vets in the area over the years and with each visit been subsequently guilt tripped that one of our cats is 'obese'. I started to feel like a bad 'mom'. But it's not like I can sign her up for Jenny Craig or spike her water bowl with ephedra. A year or two ago, Toast magically started losing weight. My husband and I were quite chuffed. Finally our efforts were paying off. Over the next few months she had whittled down to about 7 lbs. Whoops. We took her to Alpha Animal Hospital and she was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism - we would have laughed at the irony but that's just mean. Lucky for Toast, Dr. Segl knew exactly what to do and she was back home with us in a matter of days. After all that Toast is fat again. When we returned for her regular appointment, we were expecting to be chastised. But this is what Dr. Segl said: "Is Toast happy?". For some reason, that left me with a nice warm fuzzy feeling about Dr. Segl and her understanding of pets and their people. Every visit we've had at this vet has been a good experience. Normally I love all the vets there but I have a bone to pick on their wait time to provide an estimate on neutering & teeth cleaning. I noticed another customer left a similar comment 6 yrs ago about not able to get an estimate for spraying his animal without making an office visit. In my case, all my four dogs have been a long time customers there and the vets know all their health conditions so it shouldn't be that hard to get a Approximate for cost of neutering & teeth cleaning. I waited all day & never got a call back. When I called the front desk again in late afternoon of second day, I was told that all the doctors are still busy with clients & they could only work out the cost between clients. I decided to call a local animal hospital near by to find out the cost. Not only they provided me the costs over the phone but they also emailed me a detailed breakdown of the service & cost that my dog might need. Now that's what I call service & transparency. If Alpha had informed me that they were busy dealing with an emergency for both two days of my wait, I would have understand but they never called nor explained. I had problems waiting to getting special diet dog foods for my dogs as well. One time I waited 3 weeks before I got the dog food; the staff never called me to update me on the status. They blamed the delay on issue to fill a larger order before their provider would ship out everything to them. There is a communication failure from their staff that need to be address. read more

Our 2 dogs have had a few appointments with all 3 doctors at Alpha Animal Hospital. Whether it's an annual exam or a bad allergic reaction, we've felt welcomed and comfortable at every visit. The doctors and the vet techs seem to love all the animals that they serve and our pups definitely enjoy the special attention. We are so pleased with their service that we gladly drive to Fairfax from Alexandria. The only complaint that I have is that the new receptionist is still learning the ropes so I had to practice some extra patience when she was checking us out and it would have been nice if she called us to let us know we forgot our dogs meds on her desk before we made it all the way back to Alexandria. Though the doctors resolved it for us quickly! This office is a judgement-free zone and they understand that everyone trains and treats their dogs differently. They just try to give you helpful suggestions to keep your pup happy and healthy (i.e. training, grooming, etc.)! read more

Overall, I would recommend Alpha Animal hospital for your pet care due to the providers we have seen, the overall service provided, and location if you are in the Fairfax area. When considering the practice, I would advise anyone (including my closest friends) to consider overall cost, methods by which they fill prescriptions, and the abilities and friendliness of the non-clinical staff. While we have been going to Alpha Animal Hospital regularly since 2015, we have been going to Dr. Brook for much longer for vet care, and are so thankful to have such a genuine, warm, and knowledgable provider to trust our vet care to. She takes the time to really learn about what your pup needs, goes above and beyond to provide care, and will be honest with you about the realities of the situation. Additionally, we have seen Dr. Kreher a couple of times in cases of emergency and really appreciated her thoroughness and patience in providing care. These two providers are wonderful, and make it easy to choose the practice/the providers for our pups. Additionally, the other clinical staff has always been great to work with and make the visits easy-going no matter what. While we have not seen Dr. Segl personally, we have run into her many times during our visits and she has always been friendly. The items that caused me to bump down to a 3.5-4-star rating are the following: -The cost: I will admit, I do not know how this practice compares to other practices in cost, but I always am surprised at the total paid for each visit. We want to see Dr. Brook, and are willing to pay for that; however, if cost is a concern or if you're using insurance, I would recommend reaching out to them to ensure their costs align with your budget. -The service: consistency and quality of service provided by the front desk staff is not 100%. Some days I walk in into a friendly and open front office...other days not so much. I don't expect smiles plastered on everyone's face and fake friendliness, but I do expect general standards of front-office professionalism in a place of business where you are paying for service, and I don't always get. Additionally, it seems like follow-though is an issue (ex: saying they'll call once a prescription has been mailed by do not), as is ensuring adequate communication (ex: only half of the original question is answered when a response is provided to me). -The prescriptions: our household chooses Chewy.com as our main pet pharmacy, and this practice has a policy not to work with non-local online pharmacies directly. I was told it was because they don't feel comfortable dealing with this type of pet pharmacy via phone/fax/etc. This means I have to drive to the office to pick up a prescription or have them mail it to me. HUGE pain in the butt, but because I love Dr. Brook, I deal with it. I do know they have some in-house prescription services where you can leave with the bottle in-hand (we have done this on occasion in emergencies) and may possibly work with local pharmacies to call/fax prescriptions. Again, I would definitely recommend this practice for solid providers who genuinely care about your pets and take the time to help you no matter how many appointments they have. After doing some Yelp research to find a regular vet for my puppy, I decided to give this place a try. Prior to Alpha, we had been to Pender for an emergency operation for a broken arm, and although the service was great, we did end up paying an arm and a leg for the procedure (over 3 grand). I wanted to find a vet I felt more comfortable with (prices, doctor, facility), and I am SO happy I found this vet. The staff was truly amazing. The girl working at the front desk was so sweet, and answered all my redundant questions as I waited to see the doctor. She did not look annoyed or bothered one bit, and seemed so eager to help. The technician was one of the best I've seen. She did not give me short/impatient answers like you get with most doctors/technicians that are counting the minutes- her answers were thorough and very detailed. Most importantly, she made me feel very comfortable with asking lots of questions (no matter how stupid I thought they were). Dr. Segl was such a breath of fresh air! She was SO animated, intelligent, funny, and trustworthy. She sent me on my way without the vaccines I thought we needed, and I thought that was very reputable of her. Came to see Dr. Hillary for shots for my pup. I didn't have a great experience. Had to wait at least 30-45 minutes for the doc to see my pup. I had to repeat 4 times during the appointment the reason why I was there (which was just for her lyme shot and to check out her ear). I didn't appreciate that when I brought my medical documentation to the office, a page was left on the printer and I had to firmly insist that I brought it for them to check to see if it was still on the scanner (which is was). Then, to top it off, I dropped off a fecal and never received a call concerning the results. I'm still skeptical as to whether or not they did it. Prices were mid-range for the area. Not the cheapest, but definitely not the most expensive. The location is great - it's right next to Starbucks and bark 'n bubbles. Finally, I also felt like I was being judged for my dog being hyper. I was told that she needed training classes and given advice as to how to train my dog. You'd have to meet my dog to understand how I feel. I've been told she's a sweet dog. She's really submissive, but she loves to be petted (and often is) by strangers. I don't think she's a bad or overly hyper for a puppy, but even if I did need training classes for my pup, I didn't appreciate being told so. I didn't deduct stars for this point, but it definitely made me feel not welcomed to come back until she was "properly trained". read more

I have been a dog owner for over 25 years and have been long-time clients of Great Falls Animal Hospital and Falls Church Animal Hospital. Recently, two friends recommended Alpha Animal Hospital to me and I decided to give it a try. Falls Church Animal Hospital has undergone some new ownership in recent years and things have gone downhill there ever since. Dr. Brook really spent a long time discussing things with me and examining my dog. Previously, I felt like vets would only spend only 5 minutes with me. It was the first time she had met my dog and she immediately noticed conditions that my dog had for a long time. She is also very upfront about costs. I absolutely LOVE Dr Seigl!! She was always soooo great with my pup. Frenchies are not the easiest dogs to help as they can have horrible allergies, but she ALWAYS worked with me. My Mina girl was sooo well tended by Dr. Seigl and her staff. I usually never had to wait- but I will say from having visited other vets, that it is worth the wait to have the waiting room to yourself.. I always felt like my Mina girl was treated extra special... I imagine Dr. Seigl and her staff made all the animals feel that way, which is why she is the BEST vet in NoVa. The prices were never high consiering the area. (that area tends to price gauge just because).. Dr. Seigl is extremely smart. And, she always made sure my questions were answered. I was never rushed. I can't say enough about how pleased I am with Dr. Segal! I am new to Fairfax and needed a Vet for my Labradoodle ailing with a terrible ear infection. I loved her approach with him. She sat on the floor and let him come to her. Didn't overcome him. Though he is very mild mannered, he is cautious with strangers. He did awesome with her. Her assistant was lovely too. Her knowledge and approach to care is very comprehensive. She truly thinks outside the box. Doesn't just rely on fancy equipment and expensive treatment. Her knowledge and experience are evident. Given my pup has had this infection for too long, she considered causal factors that the vet in Atlanta dismissed entirely though I had questioned whether they could be possibilities. I started my experience with alpha animal and Dr Siegle 12 years ago. First off, I always liked her approach and she always had a welcoming personality to us but her love for animals and my dog was more of a connection than I have with most humans. Over the years she brought on more staff members and wasn't able to always see my dog when I came in but she picked other veterinarians who loved animals as much as she did. My Boston didn't have many issues but when there was one they were very pro active in treating them. They made follow up calls and reminders when we had an appointment coming up. All of these things that I have stated above you would expect from a vet because why get into being a vet if your love for animals was limited by choice of companion, but trust me there are many who fall into that only in it for capital gain category but not Alpha. After 15 years of loyal companionship and love to my 3 kids and my 1st pet and canine son became sick and made his last trip to Alpha. During the process as hard and tear jerking as it was they made every moment to his last a memorable and humane one. They cried along with us and at that moment I knew they weren't just a vet but apart of our family. Thank you Alpha for being there through that moment and caring for my canine son. read more

I've bounced around from other local vets and I have a good feeling about this place. Everyone I talked to was friendly and helpful. The pricing was explained to me upfront. And considering the doc spent 45 minutes just getting to know our puppy, it's a good value. I wanted an 11-year old dog with three legs; my wife wanted a puppy. We settled on a five-month old puppy. We call that a compromise in our house. I've never had a dog before. Frankly, no one prepared me for the poop and the licking. So much poop. So much licking. But everyone at Alpha was helpful. They gave me solid advice. They explained stuff I should know about the dog's health. It was preachy, or nutty or condescending. Just friendly, common sense stuff. The entire staff took time with me and I appreciate that. I didn't feel like a number or a "client." It's a laid back place. It's warm and inviting- not a sterile, clinical feel that most vets take. I bet some people would prefer that but I don't. read more

Wonderful office with really wonderful staff -you can tell they truly enjoy what they do. I have two miniature dachshunds and I've been to see both Dr. Segl and Dr. Creyer. Both doctors are very knowledgeable and caring. Dr. Creyer is especially gentle with my 5 year old dachshund who is terrified of going to the vet. She does a wonderful job of calming her down, which is nearly impossible! They are very accommodating with appointments and in my opinion their prices are very reasonable. They have never suggested an unnecessary procedure just so they could charge you for it. I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes for my appointments, but people... keep in mind that this is a vets office and a lot of things can happen to make them run behind schedule. It doesn't mean that they are doing a bad job or that they are running late with all appointments all the time. Things happen! They do a really good job of making you feel like you're part of their "Alpha Animal family" rather than just another patient among many. I'm taking my new dachshund pup for her second appointment to get a round of shots in a few weeks and I'm actually looking forward to it! The only reason why this is not a 5-star review is because I'm sure somewhere in the country, there is a better veterinarian and office. However, I am a big fan of Dr. Segal and her office. Coming from Pender Veterinary Clinic (see my review), I am very impressed not only with the quality of service but the significantly lower cost. First of all, the front office staff is very friendly and patient. There is never any attitude and they do not rush you off. In fact, the first time I had a conversation with someone, we talked for about 15 minutes and when I asked the Doctor's name, she said...oh you are speaking to her, this is Dr. Segal. She is very down to earth and does not act all high and mighty like some other vets I have encountered. When we first visited, Dr. Segal was on the floor in the front office playing with some animals. She met our dog and immediately started connecting with her and playing with her. My husband and I didn't even find out she was the vet until out of nowhere, she stood up and said, "alright, come on back." We were shocked at how down to earth this office was compared to Pender. On our way out, Dr. Segal showed us her pet iguanas and she was so passionate about them. She fed them and told us fascinating facts about them. I knew then that she truly had a passion for animals and not money. She also showed me the surgery equipment and room where our dog was scheduled to get spayed. She told me that she "could have bought a really nice car" with that money...she said it in a way that meant ensuring the health of animals is more important than a new car to her. Long story short, we are very pleased with the cost and the personable service we received from Dr. Segal. We have seen her approximately 3 times and plan on taking my dog there for her lifetime (unless long distance becomes an issue in the future). Been going here for about a year and half now and just wanted to let everyone know that I have yet to be disappointed by Dr. Segl or her staff! In the last couple of months Shiba (my pup) has had some medical issues, and Dr. Segl and her staff have been wonderful in helping me decided what best route to take for her care. They have given me several options and routes to go and then made their recommendations as to what they would do if it was their personal pet and NO it was not always the most expensive procedure that they suggested I go with. They treat Shiba as their own. I have had to have her boarded there twice for her procedures since there was a conflict in my schedule, and the staff walked, fed and played with Shiba. I have recommended her office to many friends that have changed their veterinarian because of her skills and the quality of care she gives to all her customers. read more

The vets are all very caring of my 2 dogs,particularly Dr. Segl,who answers All questions while taking whatever time is necessary.Our older dog had a cancerous tumor removed and Dr. Segl can't be more genuinely concerned about doing what is best for him and reasonable for us.She also followed up with us and has been willing to answer questions without additional office visits. I've been bringing my cats to Alpha since I had them both spayed and have never regretted it over the last ~10 years. One of my animals is diabetic (diagnosed at Alpha) and as such requires frequent trips to see the friendly staff at Alpha either for checkups or for boarding (she needs insulin twice a day with food). They have taken excellent care of her on many occasions even sending me photos and text updates on her condition. She and her sister are well known and asked after by the staff even when I'm just dropping in to pick up Rx food. On one occasion they even helped save my diabetic cat's life by quickly diagnosing her DKA and helping get me to an emergency 24 hour vet that could properly get her through the next several days of continuous care. From Dr. Segl's commiseration over diabetic cats (shes shares my trials and tribulations), to Dr. Kreher's initial diagnosis of the diabetes, to Dr. Brook directing me to the best 24 hour emergency vet, I have had wonderful interactions with all of the docs at Alpha. Liz, Sarah and the rest of the vet techs and office staff always make me and my girls feel welcome, and they always make room for me to board the cats even when work unexpectedly takes me out of town. I cannot say enough positive things about these wonderful folks and cannot recommend them highly enough. read more

I've worked with animals for over ten years - both at veterinarian's offices and at animal shelters - so I have experience with both vets and animals. That said, I love Alpha Animal Hospital. Dr. Segl is experienced and knowledgeable, the staff is friendly and competent, and best of all, they board cats. I have three teenage cats in various stages of decrepit, and with various chronic ailments. I never feel as though I am pushed into tests that aren't in their best interests. When I call for medication refills, they are attended to promptly. One of my three is on an inhaler for lung problems; Dr. Segl suggested I purchase those meds from Canada, where they're (much) cheaper. We have yet to be told 'sorry, we're full' whenever we need to board the trio, even the time we had only a few days' notice to attend a funeral. I will drive 30 minutes in DC traffic to get to these people. read more

I've only been here once for my cat's regular annual check up and vaccination. Dr. Segl was very nice and professional. While I was waiting for my turn, a guy brought in his fully recovered dog to meet her. From the line of conversation in the waiting area, it sounds like he brought the dog in to thank Dr. Segl for the emergency surgery she did on the dog. I have been going to this vet office since it opened, and like all others here, I couldn't be happier. Everyone there is a truly caring pet lover, very professional and also very loving to my dogs and cat. They treat them as they would their own. To address the one comment about fees, yes, the receptionist should have been able to give a range for the fees for the spay procedures. Next time I recommend that you just leave a message and ask one of the docs to call you back, and they absolutely will. They are not inexpensive, but I still have found them comparable with all of the other vets in the area. The bottom line is you couldn't get better care for your pets. I went in one time to have my cat assessed for a stomach issue and needed a motion sickness medication to travel. Got the prescription to purchase it online because their in-house costs are through the roof. Ordered online and this veterinarian clinic refused to authorize their own prescription through Chewy.com, despite writing this order, and never told me I needed to MAIL IN the prescription. It's literally for motion sickness. Add in that their consult fee is $75.00. Big rip off. Buyer beware. There are tons of vets in this area and no need to go through this for any reason, let alone for something so simple. read more

My two cats have had their care managed by Alpha for several years - year before last, my boy cat was acting lethargic and quite ill (no appetite, throwing up blood & bile); Alpha fit him in quickly, reasonable rates for scans, and unfortunately my little man was riddled with cancer. Alpha was extremely sensitive in their consultations with me and supportive in my decision to end his suffering. Several weeks later, I received a card with in an inked pawprint, along with a very kind condolences card. An extremely nice touch which to this day a few years later chokes me up. We love Dr. Segal. She took time to answer all of our questions in the most thorough detail. Its clear from the moment you walk in that your pet will be in the hands of a fellow animal lover. Dr. Segal was gentle, kind, and very thorough with her examination. She even took the time to recommend a behavioral specialist, several local kennels, and even a local pet food store that deals in healthy diets. We picked her because of all the positive reviews -- and we'll be coming back for years based on our experience. We took a LOT of time researching local vets and are completely satisfied with our choice of Dr. Segal. The prices are very reasonable (esp. for the area). What most impressed me is that Dr. Segal often answers the phone when you call. The day after our initial visit she called me on her own to provide even more information to one of our questions and to generally check up on how we and the dog were doing. Dr. Segal is the best! I LOVE Dr. Hillary! And so does my 11 y/o lab-shepherd mix. My dog is always happy to come to the vet, his tail never stops wagging. I have been to many vets and seen many shelter docs in my years, and Dr. Hillary is amazing! Most vets are as overmedicating to dogs as doctors are to humans these days, and one veterinary office almost killed my dog because of overmedication. When I explained what happened to Dr. Hillary she knew exactly what it was, and how to counteract the problem in the future. She really knows her stuff and cares for all animals that walk in the door. She's also very funny, and her staff are all very courteous and caring. So upset. I feel like I was just robbed. So bill is $140. $62 office visit - ok, $40 for meds -ok. $50 for a "walk in" fee changed from emergency to "walk in" like come on u saw my cat 5min. I did not mess up ur schedule. U didn't even administer the medicine. Never once said "im sorry I know it's hard." Just left me, my dying cat & 2 little boys in a room for 45min & actually only did a 5 min exam. Here is story. My cat got hit by a car. I went to Alpha & waited for them to open at 8am. They opened I went to desk crying said "my cat got hit." She said "there is an emergency fee." I said "why? This is normal business hrs. I didn't go to cheat to avoid emergency fee." She said "let me take u to a room." I waited 15min they come back. Never once said sorry never even looked at my cat. I said " I can't spend alot can u see what u think". She said she'd get me an estimate. Another 15 min comes back $500 estimate wout even looking at my cat!! I'm like I can't see putting $500 into a cat just to see what's wrong & not even fix her. Can u just examine her & see if she can even b saved. The girl said she'll get doc. 15more min Doc comes in looks at gums. Says pale not a good sign. Moves legs says not paralyzed. Then says "it dosent look good we could spend alot & her still not make it." I said "no. Can u just give her some pain meds to b comfortable. I'll take her home." She said yes & leaves. A total of 5min!!! I wait 25 more min no one comes back. No one comes. I go to front. Can I have my bill.? She says wait u need her medicine. She hands me a bottle. Im like "why aren't u giving it too her?" Rolls her eyes comes back w Doc. I ask " y can't u just give her a shot?" She said" i gave u enough for a week give every 8 hrs." I said "u were just ready to put her to sleep now your giving me meds for a week!" At this point im so over this whole ordeal. So I pay. As im walking out the girl at front desk says "Your Welcome" & not a nice "Your Welcome, either" I expected to pay, but I expected to see some compassion for my dying cat & crying boys & me, or at least a since of emergency (if ur charging me an emergency fee during regular business hrs.) I truly feel since I wouldn't pay $500 right off the bat that they didn't care. Will absolutely never go back. read more

Was calling around to find a place to have my dog spayed. Saw the good reviews on Yelp and decided to call. When I asked what their customary charge for a routine spay procedure would be, the receptionist told me that she did not have that information, but instead, I would need to make an appointment (cost $60) to see the doctor where she would go over this with me. I asked if she had ever checked out a client who had had a spay procedure and happened to remember the amount she collected from them, and she said again, that I needed to make an appointment to see the doctor to discuss this. I found this answer to be very odd, which led me to believe one of the following, either the facility has never done a routine spay procedure on a dog, so the receptionist would have never had collected a fee for this, the receptionist is incompetent, or the facility is completely profit driven. I understand that if a surgery is complex that that could change the cost and size of the dog would alter the charge, but all I was looking for was a ballpark amount. Given the perfect 5 star rating the facility has, I can only assume that this facility must pay the "scrub" fee to Yelp which allows them to remove bad reviews, so chances are this review will be scrubbed or removed, but hopefully some folks will see this and be informed of these questionable business practices. read more

We took our cat here for a bump that was bothering him and was itchy. They gave our cat a prednisone steroid without conducting a full check-up and didn't notice he had a heart murmur. Our cat went in to heart failure the next day. It was so hard to watch, he just lied there panting extremely hard. We took him to an area pet hospital and they were able to stabilize him but mentioned that our vet shouldn't have missed the heart murmur as it was very loud. He was in the hospital for a week, and we spent $6,000 to stabilize him. He ended up living six years longer and just passed away last week, but we had to keep him on heart medication for the last six years at the cost of about $1,000 a year for medicines and bi-annual check-ups at another vet.
