The entire fairfax VCA team is lovely. Been coming here a longgg time; even my childhood cat was seen here! We primarily see Dr. Koch (she's a cat lover), but saw Dr. Marchese recently too. Unfortunately this summer we had to put our beloved cat down, and while it was emotionally very difficult, I couldn't have asked for a better experience during such a difficult moment. Dr. Koch was our primary vet (she is a cat lover, so we always appreciate her tips and insight), and Dr. Marchese was the one who did the examination/diagnostic procedure/ and eventually euthanasia for our little buddy and we had a wonderful experience with her too. It was of course sad to meet Dr. Marchese under the circumstances we did, but I think it speaks a lot to the character of the people who work here that even in one of the worst moments, they made the experience as pleasant as it could be. Dr. Koch came by and gave us a hug after we had to say bye to our fur baby, and sent us a condolence card as well, as did the other staff. Pricing is reasonable, parking is easy, and we usually haven't had too much trouble getting an appointment. We recently adopted 2 little kitties and I'm looking forward to taking them to the VCA staff here. I know they will as always take good care of our buddies. read more

An absolutely disappointing experience here. We had a lot of questions because this was our first time with a young puppy and we wanted to be sure we got everything right. The front desk lady was nice at first but then became so rude and said "please Jesus" under her breath. She stormed from the desk to go talk to the doctor when we were informed that a vaccine would be covered under the first complimentary health exam. We were just so confused and she responded with irritation and passive aggressiveness. My family felt so attacked and felt like a burden hearing her say that. They also rarely answer the phone during the day and makes it so so difficult to schedule. The doctor was good but so unfortunate that the other staff were not respectful. Do NOT go here and visit other Fairfax vet hospitals instead! read more

The veterinarians and staff are great. But the company that owns the clinic decided to remove the sinks from the exam rooms when they remodeled earlier this year. And the scale for weighing our cat was on the floor because there was no place else for it. Totally impractical. I don't trust the place to be safe for our pets anymore. read more

We have been with this practice for over 20 years. It used to be great, but we are leaving because we are unhappy. Three times we tried to get our dog a same-day appointment when he was sick and could not get in. One time, we did drop him off and he was treated but we never spoke with a vet, no tests were done and we didn't feel he got a complete evaluation. Beware. VCA put a collection out on a debt that was never mine, that I never signed for. It wasn't until I got alerted from my credit bureau that a major derog was reported. I have requested this be removed, I have never received a follow up as requested. I have been having to spend my time making phone calls and requests to a shady debt collector to have this removed. This is absolutely unforgivable. How can it be possible to report a non existing debt to a person that never signed for it??? I am still working on clearing this up. read more

I was traveling in from California for Xmas break and my dog started scratching her left ear aggressively. I suspected an ear infection and wanted to see a Vet right away. VCA (Main street, Fairfax) was able to fit me in right away. Dr. Koch has been a vet for decades and provided great treatment. I realized that I have been going to this animal hospital for over 20 years - 9 with my previous dog, and now 12 with my current dog. They have always been attentive and work well with my pets. My current dog can be a handful when he is there because he gets stressed out, but they have the patience to work with him to get him settled down without having to dope him up. I do not know why I bought the health plan for my dog. I had X-rays done and then they told me it only x-rayed the shoulders up and now I would need to pay $250.00 additional $$ to have the remainder of his legs x-rayed. VCA must send marketing experts into the office to train the employees how to milk you for all the money they can. Please note there are NO positive reviews in recent months or years. They are all positive before Dr. Hunter left and VCA took over. I would never recommend taking your precious furry family member here. read more

This place has terrible service and dislikes dogs I took my dog when he was a puppy not long ago and they traumatized him when holding him by his collar and were apparently "afraid" of him but all he was doing was trying to get to know them he did not even have his teeth grown in and they complained about his biting. one of the nurses were treating our dog very poorly. I highly don't recommend this place for people who care for their dog. read more

So, when my 13 year old cat started acting off, instead of driving to our old vet which was very inconvenient, I called VCA Commonwealth. They were able to see us that same day at a convenient time. I was late due to traffic & still, at the end of a Friday, the entire staff was so kind & caring! They understood my financial concerns and didn't make me feel badly for being on a budget. It was my first time there, to pick up a prescription transfer from my regular vet who is a bit too far from me. I'm a new Siberian Husky puppy owner as of March 2014 and it's been wonderful taking him to Dr. Hunter. I did a lot of research and visited a bunch of vets in the weeks leading up to getting Odin. No one was as attentive, patient, and genuinely enthusiastic and caring as Dr. Hunter and the rest of the staff at VCA Commonwealth. They also have a complimentary puppy package which was awesome! They're extremely reasonably priced! My dog was very, very sick when I first got him and took a while to nurse him back to health. I've heard a lot of stories of the insane amount of money my friends have spent at their vets for just shots or medicine, and the few months of medicine and supplements and office visits with my dog didn't even cost a fraction of what they paid. My dog also tends to get in a lot of trouble, or maybe I'm just a paranoid mommy... probably a combination of both, but I'm always calling VCA with questions or problems, and they're awesome about answering my concerns and educating me. I love that they're honest and I never have to worry that they're just trying to get me to come in so that they can make money. The staff also really knows how to handle pets well. Again, my dog was a HANDFUL growing up, and I had taken him to several grooming shops to try to get his nails cut or bathed, and the workers eventually came back and just couldn't do it. He is totally calm at VCA and doesn't even flinch when Linda cuts and buffs his nails, or gives him shots, draws blood... or even taking his temperature up in the butt! They're really easy to schedule appointments with and they also have a home delivery website which makes it super easy to order and manage supplements and monthly preventatives. There's a subscription option where you can schedule automatic deliveries and you can manage your pets profile on their website, get reminders for their annual shots, etc. They also have a lot of contacts for groomers and pet sitters and the like. All in all, VCA Commonwealth is truly in this industry for their love of animals. I can't imagine going anywhere else and highly recommend this vet to all pet owners. Much, much better front desk service! The staff is very helpful and makes sure we receive the correct puppy food and let us know what they need from us for upcoming appointments. They have plenty of the puppy food in stock and I'm able to purchase more than enough each time I go in there. Dr. Newhardt is very patient and the assistants are loving when they take care of our puppy -- he barely moves when they administer shots or take his temperature. They've also removed the blue grooming information from the front desk...you can still ask about it and see information about grooming, but it's not being shoved in your face like it was before. read more

My pet has been having serious bowel issues for the past few weeks and call them at 11:30 pm for them to tell me that if he's not dying then take him all the way to Maryland to another practice. One of the best veterinary practices in Northern Virginia! I adopted a cat from a rescue and had a coupon for a free exam from a VCA Animal Hospital within 2 weeks. I picked this location since it seemed a more convenient location for me. Dr. Linda Marchese is one of the most loving vets I have ever encountered and she just oozed sweetness and love for animals. You can tell she loves what she does and NOT as a business to earn profits. She listened to me and worked with me what is best for my new rescue cat. I took my new cat for her yearly exam yesterday and it was a wonderful experience. She does NOT upsell or pressure you for unnecessary stuff just to get more money from you. She simply recommends what is best for the pet and the owner. I wished I had known about her from the get go when I moved to Northern VA. Her prices are totally affordable and very reasonable when you do price comparisons with other vets in the area. I will be going to her from now on with any other pets I have or will have in the future. Highly recommend! read more

I'm really puzzled by the poor review below because we've used Commonwealth since 2005 and have never had a rude receptionist. The female doc currently (2011) on staff there, Dr. Moulton (sp?), has been kind to our dogs and has not been hasty to recommend surgery. In 2011, our current dog went blind and had her cataracts removed by Dr. Corcoran of Vet Vision -- who used to work at Commonwealth until she started her specialty practice -- and Corcoran is nice, too. I have no idea what woman the angry reviewer can be talking about. Commonwealth is not as fancy as its competition (Centreville Animal Hospital owned by Dr. Garrison), but it's not as pricey, either. CAH has a lovely building with a big lot and the latest equipment -- which has to be paid for somehow, right? Whereas Commonwealth has a nice building on a smaller lot (still plenty of parking!) with all the equipment needed for most situations. Commonwealth also has at least one very cool exam table which starts at floor level so your dog can walk onto it, and then rises like an elevator until you and the dog are looking each other in the eye. All four of my dogs have really liked it. There's one more thing you should know. Commonwealth gives discounts to at least one rescue league -- the Mid-Atlantic German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue -- and for all I know, they may give discounts to all rescue leagues. But what I know for certain is that Centreville Animal Hospital will NOT give discounts to ANY rescue league. So: price, quality of care, elevating exam table, discounts to worthy causes, and the kindness of the staff mean that we switched from Centreville Animal Hosp. (except for a couple of emergency visits in 2009) to Commonwealth Animal Hospital and we've been very happy with them. read more

I love this hospital, they always take the best care of my pets. My family has been going here for ever I believe, almost 40 years and Dr. Hunter and Herman are the absolute best. I do not like the new lady at all, Van-Sickel. My best friend and her family have been going here for years as well even during there Himalayan breeding business, and loves them as well. Van-whatever is rude to new pet owners, my dog broke her toenail and i had many questions since i am only 18 and don't know what to do, her responses where so short that it just made me have even more questions. My husband and I had to move to Japan on military orders and Dr. Van Sickle went above and beyond helping us with paperwork, shots, and records to import our pets. My family & I have been taking our cats here since we got them 10 months ago and have not had any problems with rude staff or substandard care. We chose this place, after extensive research, at the recommendation of friends who had difficulty finding a good vet when they first got their pets (about 15 years ago). They had since been coming here for over a decade and highly recommended it. As for my family, one of our cats has recently developed severe allergies and has needed relatively frequent check-ups while we determine what she is allergic to. She has received nothing but diligent, attentive care from their highly knowledgeable staff, and has improved greatly since she first started showing symptoms. The prices are excellent (less than $40 per visit, not including lab work & medication) and the care is better. I would recommend Commonwealth to any pet owner. The only real down side is that they are not a 24-hour emergency care facility and don't provide any way to schedule appointments while they're closed (meaning, you can't call on Sunday afternoon & leave a message asking what appointment times are available on Monday). However, if you do have an emergency after hours, you can call and get their recorded message, which includes the home phone number of one of their vets and the number for a 24-hour emergency care vet clinic in Vienna. read more

I've been bringing my Egyptian Mau cat to this vet for the past two years and have always had great customer service here. The ladies at the front are always prompt and fair when dealing with both humans and animals alike, and the nurses and doctors here all clearly love and show great care for all the pets. We have been taking our Westie pup to this establishment from day 1. We really like Dr. Hunter and have only had pleasant experiences with all of our visits. Our Westie was spayed here too by Dr. Hunter at the age of 6 months and the procedure was done exceptionally well. Nothing but positive feed back from our end. The only reason why I didn't give them 5 stars is because they are a little pricey but with some things, you get what you pay for and I'd rather have the peace of mind that I chose quality over the bottom line! read more

Took our 14 year old cat in today because of a limp and a lack of eating. We were lucky enough to catch Dr. Hunter who has treated her many times before. Dr. Hunter treated out kitty kindly and gently, quickly working to figure out what was going on. Prescribed some antibiotics and gave her some anti-inflammatories. I have three cats and one dog. I searched around the Fairfax area as I wanted a small Vet clinic which typically means more hands on and better service. This was my experience with VCA Commonwealth. The staff there is very friendly. My pets have been seen by Dr VanSickle and she was very thorough and courteous. Dr V also did follow calls to see how my cat was doing which I thought was wonderful. Their pricing was much cheaper than the larger clinic about a mile from here. Their kennel fees are also very reasonable and I get discounts with my cats as I have three plus one dog. My dog actually seems to like going there for his shots and he also gets a bath as a treat. read more

Recently, I had the pleasure of bringing my "son" ( a miniature schnauzer) with kidney problems to the VCA.He had been struggling taking food and water; I was having difficulty caring for him at home. To say that the staff at the Fairfax VCA were anything less than angelic would be an understatement. This practice used to be a private practice, Commonwealth Animal Hospital. When the owner retired, he sold the business to a chain, VCA. Some of the longtime staff was let go, fired or otherwise, and VCA brought in their own people. Dr. David Hunter, my vet of over thirty years, remained during the changeover. I also stayed as a customer until Dr. Hunter retired at which time I immediately took my pet's records and embarked on a search for a private practice where the primary goal is the care and love of people's four legged companions (or two legged, or whatever), not profit. I have been taking pets to Commonwealth for about 25 years, first my long-haired chihuahua and now my cat and black lab. I have found the vets there to be caring and knowledgeable, as well as the clinic staff that works with the animals. My previous dog was a true chicken--all 85 lbs. of him--when it came to going to the vet's, and the staff members were always quite patient about helping keep him on the examining table, treating him kindly, etc. Had one dog and one cat neutered, and another dog spayed, through the clinic; no complications. The vets are friendly and truly seem to love animals; you get the idea that it's not just a profession; it's a passion as well. Anyway had to put in my two cents' worth. I have had nothing but positive experiences with the clinic staff. I recommend the clinic to friends as well. :) read more

We LOVE Commonwealth Animal Hospital. We have 2 dogs and 3 cats. When we moved to Fairfax, we were commuting back to Centreville for vet care because we loved our vet but it was a long commute if they were sick. Our neighbors told us about Commonwealth (they have 2 cats) and we tried them. We love the care we receive - both for our animals and the rapport that we share with the Drs. Our oldest daughter wants to be a vet and they are so nice to her and explain procedures, etc... We are VERY happy we Commonwealth - we trust all of our little furry family members there and we HIGHLY recommend them to anyone in the Fairfax area. read more

Our pets have been patients at Commonwealth Animal Hospital since the mid 1970s. That should say enough. But I'll add that Dr. Hunter is a gentle giant. He is kind, compassionate, good-natured and highly talented. He manages to converse with family while he is examining your pet. I couldn't ask for anything more in a vet and I hope he never retires. His staff is kind and helpful. It's a smallish hospital with big things to offer. Quit looking and make an appointment with Dr. Hunter; you'll be so pleased, as will your pet.
