Just got my hair cut by stylist Kana. Boy did she do an amazing job. Best cut I've had in 5 years. It's really too bad I don't live in Vancouver! My hair is long, thick and heavy. For so long it's been weighing my head down, heating up my neck and giving me headaches when tied up in a ponytail or bun. Kana literally took 3lbs off my head. Highly recommend. She is definitely skilled, able to thin out my hair while still maintaining length and style. I've got so much more volume now and my hands go through my hair like there's nothing there. Nobody has ever made my hair as light as Kana, let alone as nice looking afterwards. Before I touched it, I honestly thought I'd have to ask for more to be taken off. But nope! I've been on the hunt for the perfect hair stylist and I think I finally found one! I've always had really long hair, but it was dead and lifeless. To this day, I never found anyone who could REALLY give my hair life, but keep the length somewhat long.. until Kengo cut and styled it! The precision and care that was demonstrated throughout my haircut was top notch. Kengo made sure not to cut any shorter than I wanted, yet still managed to remove all the damage! It's also SUCH an amazing deal!! Walking out of the salon, my hair was voluminous, soft and shiny. Not only that, but to this day, my hair still maintains the style that I walked out with. I would give 0 star if there's an option for that. I made an appointment with them for haircut, and called again on the day(Aug 16th) to confirm the date and time was correct. Their staff told me "yes, you have a haircut at 3pm today." and I say "cool, see you soon" So I went there, but this older lady with a very bad accent told me my appointment is next week. After I explained about the phone call I just made in the morning with them, all she said just sorry we don't have space today. She didn't offer any compensation about the mistake they made. I came in last minute looking for someone to cut my hair and give me some sort of style, give me long layers to blend in some random short hairs I had and not use those thinning scissors. My hair is thin, sparse, wavy and damaged. She looked at my hair and worked her magic. I've never had a good haircut before but Kana was able to give me a nice haircut that frames my face. Had a great experience from booking to the hair cut. I called in the same day to book a haircut and they were able to squeeze me in. I had a super pleasant experience from the haircut. I came prepared with pictures of the type of cut I wanted (layered cut with curtain bangs) and I got exactly what I asked for. The hair wash was probably the highlight of the entire experience. The scalp massage was super relaxing. The only thing I wish they offered with their cuts is styling. I'm used to having my hair curled after a cut, but it's definitely a nice to have! read more

Go to Japan once in your life. You'll come back a different person. I called the day before and lucked out with an appointment the next day with one of their Stylist Directors, Ayumi. It's a smallish salon with 4 chairs but pretty new (around 3 years old). The Japanese level of service and attention to detail is unmatched. Took a seat and Ayumi quickly made her gameplan. Although back massages are good, getting your hair washed and then getting a scalp massage is the real deal. Several drink options are offered during your cut. I opted for green tea. For years I was one of the guys who went for the cheap $12-15 cuts. But I can tell you, paying $40 here is worth every penny. Guys, ladies do indeed notice the different in quality and style, trust me. I can honestly say after going to Ayumi once, it was the best haircut and experience I've ever had. And I'm sure her colleagues are just as good and super cool to talk to. Don't be cheap. Let Japan take hair of your do. read more

My appointment with Mai was 20 mins late. I almost walked out. I dont know if it was because my apointment was at 5 pm on a Saturday? I felt extremely rushed by Mai as she wanted to leave my ends "heavy" because I had thin hair. I told Mai I wanted layers and I felt she totally rushed my hair cut and that she was being lazy to make an effort to do a better job. She also cut my hair a little shorter than I wanted and kept dropping the comb on the floor. I paid $50 for a fast cut that could have costed $20. I wont be going back to Alpha D. The salon is too small and overcrowded that the other stylist knocked over their business cards all over the place. If the staff are too busy and over worked maybe they shouldn't book so many clients a day. I have also been to other Japanese salons and I know they usually take their time and care. NOT WORTH THE HYPE on YELP. The next Japanese salon I am goin to try is Chura on Howe. They have gotten many good reviews and their cuts are only $30 for cut, shampoo and dry. Got my haircut with Mai last week and I love it! She was super sweet and very talented. I didn't go in with any pictures and she cut my hair in a very flattering way. This is the first salon I've been to where I don't feel worried about my hair getting ruined. The whole experience was great. Mai took my coat when I came in and they have an little table right by each hair station for purses. I advise to not bring a work purse or large bag as the area isn't that big. Next I was treated to a lovely scalp massage and shampoo. An eye cover was placed over my eyes and I was given a large towel as a blanket. After that I was offered some warm green tea. I wanted short layers for volume which Mai kindly advised against due to my naturally wavy hair. I'm happy she did, because my long layers look great and still provide the volume I was looking for. I'm not a huge fan of talking while I get my haircut and didn't feel obligated to keep a conversation going. Overall, a week later, I happy to have a low maintenance, sharp cut and am looking forward to coming back in a few months. Price is reasonable as well! Which is a nice bonus! read more

Mai did a fast and great job at bleaching my hair and coloring it into picture I brought with me in only 2.5 hours! I brought a lot of pictures and she really talked through with me to understand what exactly I want in terms of tones. The colors turned out like how I wanted. I feel like I can trust her with bleach and getting the right colors. The place has a positive, energetic and busy vibe although it's very small and crowded. Lovely, modern, gentle, clean, and I love my trim! I had a very difficult morning and considered canceling my hair trim appointment . I am growing out my hair and was having remorse about taking the ends off- the bad morning combined with the hair chopping remorse almost made me want to just mope with my splitty ends . I am glad I pushed moping off the schedule and went on with my day to Alpha D. The salon is located on Homer ( same side of the street as the Vancouver Library ). Ayako was very patient and professional . She did exactly what I asked- just an inch off and brought my outgrown layers back to life. I wasn't in a chatty mood, but a lovely lady next to me was chatting with her stylist . Every stylist in the salon had a client and you can see their personality peek out while they were cutting/ styling. Everyone seem genuine and they like what they do. ( superficial but fun comment : the stylists were very stylish themselves! Hair, clothes, accessories . I would personally take advice from them on fashion, hair, and nails just from their appearance on this Friday ). I would advise you call ahead to schedule your hair appointment. ( I'm sure they take walk ins too). My stylist meticulously snipped away my ends and I really like how pleasant she was during the entire cut . She applied a green tea oil on it and blow dried ( nice since it was drizzling out) and made my hair feel very loved . This is a great salon, excellent work, decent prices. I've had colour, highlights, and haircut/styling, from 3 different stylists, and all have delivered excellent service. The language thing isn't too bad at all, as they all speak fairly good English, and whatever needs to be communicated further can be done through a time-honoured system of smiling and hand gestures. It's also pretty easy to get an appointment with only a few days' notice, so long as you're not picky about your stylist. Totally recommend, especially if you live and/or work downtown. read more

After Ayako left, I have had my hair cut by Taeko multiple times. I highly recommend Taeko. She communicates well, and provides good suggestion/advice. My hair has natural curls that's tricky to cut. At my first visit, I explained to Taeko my hair is curly, gets frizzy easily, grows fast and difficult to maintain. I told her that I would like a style that's easy to maintain (I'm not good at blow drying my hair) She listened patiently and suggested to have lower and very little layers so my hair don't get messy easily. I wanted to make sure to give Ayumi a review since all the reviews here are for Taka. I have super straight hair, and really wanted a digital perm. Two salons turned me away saying they couldn't do it. I went in for a free consultation with Ayumi and she really took the time to study my hair, and was honest with me with what the perm could or couldn't do with my naturally straight, fine hair. She and Taka promised if the curls didn't stay, they would re-do the perm for free. I went in a couple weeks later to get the perm, and I LOVE IT. The curls are bouncy and exactly what I showed her in my sample pictures. The whole process was so professional - the staff constantly asked me if I needed a drink (four hour process!), gave me Halloween treats, and most importantly Ayumi always explained what she was doing, how long I would have to wait during each part of the process, always asked me if I was okay, if I needed to use the washroom, and so on. Specifically for the perm, I could tell she really took her time rolling each roller to make sure it was all properly done. I was also really worried that my hair would be extremely dry after the treatments, but it's not! And she took the time to explain to me how I should blowdry/style it to make the curls more defined. A very pleasant overall experience. Also, there is free parking which is amazing in Downtown. read more

I don't live in Vancouver, but I make it a point to get my hair done here if I'm in town--that's how much I love this salon. I have yet to have a bad cut and the prices are very reasonable for the excellent service and attention to detail. Hard to describe, but somehow they manage to make my hair look amazing months after I've had a cut... like it grows out in such a way that it still falls and frames my face nicely. I've been a client of Taka's for many years now, I don't trust anyone with my hair except him anymore! He is very patient and takes his time making sure that you are satisfied with your cut. I've gotten colour, highlights, and cuts done from him and I would recommend him time and time again to friends and family. I don't usually go to a Japanese Salon, due to the language barrier. My experiences with Japanese stylists fluctuate between stellar and just average. I went in Alpha D because it was close to my office. I met Saika before the Christmas. She immediately proceeded with the haircut after attentively listening to my ideas. I liked the haircut. A month later I went in again and asked for same kind of haircut. Saika delivered again. I did ask her to cut shorter afterwards, she had no complaint and meticulously trimmed the hair. My experience with Alpha D has been consistently great. I feel they really take their time and try to their best for the customers. I would recommend anyone looking for great haircut from experienced Japanese stylists. read more

Ayumi NAILED IT!!! I'm visiting a friend in Vancouver and decided to go for a quick cut. I have very long hair with almost no layers. It was getting pretty heavy and hair weighing down so I asked for long layers without cutting any length. She was very specific in trying to understand what I wanted and I loved it because she didn't get carried away. Some stylists get really carried away when cutting lengths or giving texture. I left the salon with exactly the style I had in mind. Plus, it seemed like this store has a lot of regulars, coming back again and again. They must be doing SOMETHING RIGHT?!!! :) Highly recommended if you know exactly what you want. You get what you ask for! read more

I've been coming here for more than 1 year and had few perms done. I agree with one of the previous review that their perm does damage the hair a bit. I have my hair permed every 3-6 months depending on the hair style and how good the wave can stay. With 2 times of perm from Alpha D, my hair became more damaged, dry and cracked at the end more than having the perm done in other salons. I tried their pricy Japanese Perm (cost me 200+) and regular perm (100 something), and even tried the perm with a hair treatment, the outcome were all disappointed. Probably just my expectation was set too high. When I went to other salon and had hair treatment, I always left with shinny and smoothy hair, but this never happened after the treatment from Alpha D. I always take good care to my hair, including regularly hair treatments at home and salon, but I can see my hair is now dryer than before, just about 1 month after the perm from Alpha D (2nd time). I even got a comment from my friend lately saying "what happened to your hair lately? Did you BRUSH your hair this morning?" I don't know if the serious damage was because the way they rolled my hair or the products they used...... I now have to increase the frequencies of home treatments to my hair, in order to make up for the damage. :( On the other hand, the cuts were good. I like how they cut the layers and all the attentions they put into cutting. Probably I will go back there to have hair cuts, but definitely not perms or hair treatments. read more

I had the worst colour job ever here. My ash brown turned orange in less than 3 wks. I did everything I was supposed to do, used a high end purple shampoo etc etc. When I sent Kana a before pic (the very photo she took of me at the salon and posted on her IG) up against an after pic, she said it's normal for this to happen. It's not my first rodeo- this has never happened to my hair at other salons. But she said the only solution would be to re-colour and charge me full price again. After spending over $300, I would have expected at least a small attempt to maybe re-tone my hair or something. I just got the "too-bad-so-sad" answer. read more

I believe it was Saika i had an appointment with and i am SO disappointed. Although she was very sweet, she did not cut my hair like the picture i showed at all.....AND she cut it shorter. I worked so hard at growing my hair long and emphasized i wanted it long...she only left about 2 inches of hair long and cut the rest in layers so it all looks so much shorter. Also she did not style my hair. She blow dried it (not even with a proper straightening end) and it was floofy when i left. Just very disappointed. 10/10, already recommending the salon to my friends and family. I walked in Sun afternoon and asked if there were any available slots left in the day and I luckily got a 6pm slot. My stylist was Mai and I had a wonderful hair cut from her. I brought in pictures and told her that I wanted the shape from the pictures but to also have a longer version as I wanted to keep as much length as possible. Mai actually studied the pictures and let me know of certain discrepancies (ex. the picture had no layers but my hair still had some long layers so did I want one length and cut up to my short layers or keep the layers and have slightly different look?) and we talked everything out to make sure she knew exactly what I wanted. She also showed me how much she'd cut off in the beginning (~3/4") and actually only cut off that much in the end! We started off with a hair wash and I definitely appreciate Alpha D for bringing the Japanese "privacy shields" you see in salons in Japan. It's a rectangular piece of gauze that's stickered above your eyebrows so you can avoid that awkwardness of whether or not to stare at the person washing your hair and just relax. I also got a lovely scalp massage before the cut started. Mai was quick and friendly and I appreciated that she'd chat a bit but not badger me to constantly talk. Appointment started on time and I was done in an hour. A woman's cut came to $42 including tax. Highly recommend Mai and the team at Alpha D! As for parking, there's street parking in front on the salon but it's cheaper to walk/transit. If you do drive, I recommend parking in a parkade as the rates are cheaper. read more

As a regular, I wanted to write an updated review. Since last time, I've gone twice to Mai for haircuts, and once to Saika for a cut and colour- I always leave a happy customer. What I love most about Alpha D, and everyone there is that they are so well versed in how different kinds of hair behave, and how it would look, that I can depend on their expertise and advise on my haircut looking the best it can. This time my appointment was with Mai, and I was once again blown away that she made the haircut look like the picture I brought, yet just different enough (which we carefully discussed of course) to compliment my face.
