I needed to get a hair trim on the same day and the online booking showed all booked. So i called and they were able to squeeze me in for a haircut (1hour) on the same day. With COVID-19 you must have an appointment to enter the hair salon. No walk-ins. I arrived 5 minutes early and checked in. Mine-san was my hair stylist and she was friendly and professional. I only needed a slight trim for my hair and bangs plus thinning. She washed my hair (such an enjoyable experience) and finished the trim in 45 minutes. The total came to around $60 (incl tips). Other japanese salons charge around similar prices for ladies haircut WITHOUT shampooing, this salon includes shampooing in the price. The salon is a humble place it's not upscale or lux. It's difficult to rate salons because one's experience is hairstyle and stylist dependent, and stylists move around from salon to salon. With that stated, I was quite satisfied with all my experiences with Misako, until the day I called to cancel my appointment (last minute changes at work) only two hours before the booked time. I was told that the store's policy was to no longer allow appointment bookings to a customer who cancels with less than 24-hours notice, if he/she does it more than once. Since it was my first time doing this, I wouldn't be penalized, but it left me a sour taste. While it's certainly inconvenient for a stylist to reserve a specific time for a specific customer, only to have that customer cancel shortly before the appointment, this is the nature of the job; it's subject to such occurrences. Penalizing the customer for it is tacky, at best. So if I do this one more time, and I can no longer make appointments, am I to walk in every time I want a haircut and hope my stylist is available? Why would I want to continue giving this place my business, then? Misako certainly isn't as bad as other salons that TAKE YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER IN ADVANCE so they can charge people for late cancellations, but it's a step in that direction. It's a shame, but I will no longer visit this salon because I won't support such business practices. read more

Had very disappointing experience today, will not go there anymore. I showed a picture to the stylist, he promised to deliver, but at the end of the day it was not even close to what it looks like in the picture. When I asked why the model in the picture had more curls than I did, he said that the model had natural curls, which I don't even know if someone can tell by simply looking, and he didn't notify me ahead of time. Now I'm having a head of damaged hair which looks like the perm has happened three months ago - and that costs $180. What really frustrates me as well is that I had never had a same stylist working with me for the entire five years being customer there. Though I'm asked who my stylist was every time I made reservations , I was constantly assigned to someone I had never met who had just started in the shop. I asked for digital perm hair (ended up paying $200+ as they charge extra for hair washing (or cut not sure) during the process...ended up with damaged hair, no layers, plus frizz everywhere and no digital perm at all when I washed my hair 48 hours later as instructed. I had digitally permed my hair twice before years ago elsewhere all ended up with beautiful natural curls without even having to blow dry every time! My hair after this place is now without layer, with frizz, and no perm at all hair is just messy...I have to now wait until my hair grow up a bit longer and then I can find some other places to take care of my style! Would not go back this place ever again! Least it is summer now so I don't need to worry about the messy hair I can just tie my hair back everyday so I look decent! read more

My first time to have a haircut by a Japan trained. I am Asian(filipino) and always gone to regular Non Asian hairstylists. I have to say I am pretty happy with this salon. my hairstylist is Emi. She spent time with me at the initial consultation and gave honest opinions about the kind of cut that will suit me. She answered all my questions non hurriedly. She tells me what kind of training they get in Hairdesigning in Japan. She States that it will take about 4years before a newbie hairstylist get to cut their own customer's hair in Japan. Pretty intense training i would say. They go to school for two years I have to say she knows a lot about Asian hair challenges, characteristics and style. She also have a different technique in layering and giving volume to my hair. Id say Asian stylist for Asian hair- specifically Japanese trained for me works! She also took time in removing the split ends on my damaged hair. Thanks Emi! The salon itself is regular- no hair products on display, no fancy decors, lighting and shelves. That works for me. Just went there today and I am in love. I was looking for a new hair salon as I am tired of travelling to downtown to get my hair cut. Would I be able to find a place that would give me the same quality haircuts that you can get downtown but in Burnaby? That was my mission for today. And, I think I can say mission completed successfully! LOVED my hair stylist, Lisako. She was very professional and gave great service. She repeated all the things I requested for my hair cut to make sure she got them right. She also asked me before she gave me a free head/shoulder massage or before she put on any complimentary products in my hair. She also curled my hair for free (which added about 5-10 min to the haircut session... totally appreciated!) because she saw me perusing through the Japanese hairstyle magazines where the girls have mostly curled hair. I'll definitely be back! I'm loving the curled look so much that I might go back for a digital perm or something soon. read more

My hair stylist is here at this branch. Go-San the male hair stylist. He is a nice person and always gives me what I want. He gives me the best service every time with green tea, and a couple of new magazines he has stored up in the back room. I love this place as it has the best vibe ever. Calming and peaceful, with a little bit of Japanese chatter around. Most of the people here know English, but knowing Japanese is a plus, especially when you are a picky person with their hair styles. They usually come up with new styles and new deals every now and then which always pulls me in and go grab something different from time to time to treat myself. After years of paying too much for my haircuts (not to offend my previous stylists who did wonderful jobs; up keeping my 'dos just got too expensive), I finally found a place with a stylist that understands Asian hair! And who doesn't charge an arm and a leg to cut it! I had been wanting to cut my hair for awhile now so I called them after lunch and scored a same day appointment. It was my first visit to Misako and Go was my stylist. I brought in a print out of three similar hairstyles and he proceeded to cut, layer, trim, wash, blow dry, and style my hair similar to the photos in just a little over one hour. He was polite, efficient, and throughout the cut, made sure he was cutting it the way I wanted. He even went as far to loosely curl my hair to replicate the styles in the photos, putting every curl in place. The studio was clean, bright (though they could use softer lights), and the atmosphere was overall pleasant. With a 10% introductory discount, my haircut totaled $43 with tax, less than half of what I used to pay. I recommend this studio if you live or work in Burnaby. You get the same quality and service as you do at many of the high end salons located downtown, without the sass. I'll definitely be heading back to this studio for my next cut. read more

I'm a frequent customer of Hive and have been to Zeal a couple of times - I decided to try out Misako because they're really close to where I work. Like most Japanese hair salons, the stylists at Misako are all incredibly friendly. I managed to grab an appointment on the same day and my stylist was really accommodating; I was late by 10 min because of traffic and he went forward without fuss. My stylist took the time to see what worked with my hair. I looked through the style books and chose a fairly classic style - my stylist was able to cater it to my hair and face type. My only complaint would be that the Japanese massage post-cut was pretty weak and short. Everything else was spot on! read more

I just had the best haircut from Mako today. She was sweet and friendly. She listened to what I wanted and thoroughly looked at the pictures are brought. She gave the best head/hair massage that made my toes tingle. Mako gave her point of view without coming across as being too aggressive. She made me see the potential of how my hair could look like and showed me how nice my hair could look with the right styling and layering. I'm very picky with my hairstylist and never return to the same salon even if the slightest little bit is wrong with my hair post appointment. But mako is great! Sadly I had the worst highlights in my life( I have to admit that the guys who work there are really nice and friendly, and I sent them email that my highlights are awful and I look terrible they immediately scheduled me another appointment and tried to fix it for free. I was late for my appointment once, but never ever received a rude attitude from her. Maybe because I called in before my appointment time to let them know my situation and apologized? Never know. I have been receiving hair services from Lisako for years, and I never had complains whatsoever. She is professional, skilled and very funny. She also never lies. If the hairstyle that I want does not match my face shape, she will give a recommendation that's much better. I'm a big fan of Lisako and the atmosphere that Misako's has. read more

This place has pretty mixed reviews so I was a little hesitant to book an appointment here, but I was too lazy to go to their downtown location so heck, I gave this place a shot. My hairstylist Ayaka did a fantastic job with my haircut, and I only had to show her a photo in one of their men magazines. My haircut was skilfully done, and the head massage was heavenly. It was my first time in Misako studio, and stylist Miki has made my day. She worked fast, and delivered great quality service. I appreciate that. Miki cut, washed, conditioned and styled my hair, and gave me a shoulder massage. The envorinment is fun, friendly, easy, and no pressure at all. I will go there next time. Misako has a reference discount program giving 10% off the first hair service to you and the person you bring. They also have points collecting program, offering $15.00 discount after 15 haircuts. i got a haircut by Kiyo. I showed them a pic of a short bob i wanted and was NOT satisfied. the front pieces were too long, and when I got home and washed my hair my family noticed that there were pieces of hair longer than others and was asymmetrical (which is NOT what i requested for). the layers look sloppy and uneven, and I also noticed pieces of hair in the back that is completely shaved off. I dont know if its a technique they use to give volume to the hair or what, but if they were going to shave off pieces of hair in the back of my head, i shouldve gotten a heads up in advance. its literally everywhere at the back and will take me years to grow out. quite a shitty place to go for a haircut, unless you like the uneven amateur look. waste of 60$. read more

I'm so glad to have met Kazu. It was my first time at Misako Metrotown so I wasn't sure of what to expect. I had booked myself for an Airwave Perm and had a rough idea of how I wanted it to look. Kazu helped me to figure out the length and style which would best suit me & it turned out great! He then showed me how to dry and style my new hair and offered to show me variations in styling. It took about 2.5 hours (which is fast) but the time flew by so quick as he was so pleasant to talk to. What I liked best about working with Kazu is that he was attentive to my choice of style but at the same time he was honest about what would suit me best. Often times an inexperienced stylist would just follow along with the client's request whether the style suited them or not so I appreciated Kazu's professionalism and honesty. Although Kazu is new to the salon it turns out he has 10+ years of experience in the industry which is apparent from his knowledge and ways in which he addressed my questions. I came to the place based on other yelpers' review. After having long hair for more than 8 years, I was extremely nervous to cut my hair short. Lisako, my stylist, was super professional and attentive. She first calmed me down by cutting my hair little by little till a point that I could imagine myself in shorter hair and then proceeded with more dramatic cut and final styling. This is by far the worst Japanese Hair Studio place I have been to in Vancouver in the past 10 years!! Misako chain has a pretty good reputation at other locations, but this MetroTown location is an exceptional. I can see why people frequently give this place mixed reviews. I booked for an appointment 4 days in advance. I was 10 minutes late for my appointment due to traffic at Metrotown. After I paid for parking and walked in, they told me they can't do my hair anymore, because there won't be enough time. It turns out they book people for 30 minutes appointments only!! Most other Japanese hair studios book for 60 minutes appointments with wash, styling and shoulder massage after. This place charges the same, with less service. When questioned about the short appointment time, they were extremely defensive, and stated that the reasons is because they are "very busy" and different from other locations. The most offensive thing was the staff was not courteous at all. Very rude with their explanations, and had a "we don't need your business" kind of attitude. I have never been this dissatisfied with a hair studio visit. It's a shame the Metrotown Misako Hair Studio cares more for making short fast turnover appointment for quick money, rather than actually focusing on hair styling and customer care. Don't expect the courteous Japanese service or quality at this studio. I would never go to this place again. There are so many good alternatives out there. Misako Metrotown was the worst Japanese hair studio experience I had in 10 years. What a shame. read more

I went to Emi since Hive was just to far of a drive for me. Wish I had gone to Hive instead. MAybe it was my fault I should have asked for a senior stylist. I felt like she didn't give me a good cut. My wife needed her hair done and wanted it done by a Japanese stylist so I looked on Yelp for a Japanese hair salon and found Misako and booked an appointment for her the same day, when we got there we started to look through some of they many magazines they have and found a nice style for my wife that would of needed a perm and colour. My wife's designer was Misha a very sweet girl,she said she couldn't give my wife the hair style like in the magazine because my wife had her hair straightened about 6 months earlier and giving her the perm would damage hear hair.My wife had her hair cut and straightened again and I must say Misha did a great job and my wife will definitely be back to see Misha and our 8 year old son will go in as well for his next hair cut.I would highly recommend Misha. read more

Misako at Metrotown has great, talented and friendly stylists. Aya and Tomoya especially did amazing jobs with my mom and I's haircuts. Also, they all greet you when you come in, and they give you a shoulder massage before your hair cut! What?! There is another Misako that's just a block from where I live in downtown but after coming to the one at Metrotown for the first time and after seeing Aya and Tomoya's skills, I will keep coming back to them. My mom has always wanted this particular hair style but has always had bad luck getting it from hair stylists. That is, until I took her to Misako at Metrotown and Aya gave her a cut. My mom was so excited and extremely happy with the results, and I believe she will be coming back here for her future hair cuts. I also got a haircut from there, from Tomoya. He was very friendly and handled my hair with such carefulness. I showed him briefly a haircut that I wanted from my phone. The result was beautiful. However, when I got home and got a closer look, I realized I didn't get enough layers like I wanted. I also realized it was my fault, really, because I didn't specify the layers or explain thoroughly or even show the photo long enough to Tomoya. When I was still at the salon, my hair was really brushed well so I guess I didn't see the lack of layers. It was still a very beautiful cut and goes really well with waves but I don't think I can fix my hair like that every day! The next day, they emailed me saying thanks for coming in (I had filled out a card with my name and email before my cut because I was a first time customer). In the email, they said if I wasn't satisfied with the cut and if I came in again within a week, they would fix it for free. I emailed back saying I wanted more layers and that I would pay the regular rate because it was my fault I didn't communicate exactly what I wanted. So I came in again and Tomoya had added more layers. This time, I thoroughly explained to him what I wanted. He did the job perfectly and I was super happy with the results. Tomoya then started to escort me out. I said, oh but I haven't paid. He explained it was free because it was to fix the first one. I told him it was my fault it didn't come out as I wanted and that it's actually a different cut now so I should pay, but he insisted on it. I said my many thanks - extremely happy with the service, the results and their actions to fix an issue. I just wish I had cash to tip Tomoya. I've been a customer for over 8 years, but on and off because their hair stylists return to Japan after a while. Recently I decided try the place again because someone recommended stylist Emi . I went there to cut a long bob and dye a color. Emi gave me some useful tips on how I should keep it in a certain length that is easy to manage. After everything was done, I loved the hairstyle but the color weren't very even and wasn't what I wanted, I was asked to go in again so the color could get fixed. 2 days after which is today, Emi helped to pick a color that I really liked and evened everything out. I'm now super happy with both the style and color and will definitely return. Just hope she'll stay in here for a long time so I don't have to do experiment with another stylist soon. read more

Had my hair did by Yuki today. I saw that Dru went to see Go so I figured I give it a shot. There was a little bit of a language barrier at first but we were able to overcome that. As a word of advice, be prepared with pictures or an idea of what you want. The hair cut was exactly how I wanted it based on my picture. What was also interesting was a shoulder and neck massage after my shampoo. Usually, the massage is done during the shampoo but it was an excellent regardless. I have NEVER had such a bad experience at a salon before. I've been to Misako a few times and usually they are okay. However, recently, I went there to get a haircut and highlighting done (they had a 20% March promotion) and it was my worst decision. I didn't request for a specific stylist as I didn't know anyone from there. The lady who cut my hair just came to Canada 3 months ago and she couldn't communicate with me at all. I'm usually prepared for this when I go to a Japanese salon, but I never had the experience where the stylist would need to take out an English manual to communicate with me. I was starting to get worried but i thought, language barrier would be okay as long as she's good at what she's doing. So she started cutting my hair and I'm not exaggerating this, she would ask me if she could cut it every time she took a strand of my hair. It just got really frustrating because I'm not a professional hairstylist. I told her the style that I wanted and I would expect that she would know how to deliver the end result. Now moving onto the highlighting part....again, she kept on asking me questions every time she put a piece of foil on my head. The end result was that i got highlights but they were all underneath my top layer of hair. And it was very uneven, it seems like she just randomly highlighted different parts of my head. After she was done, she told me that this was the "natural" look. Overall, she only used 2 hours to cut my hair and highlight, which was very quick in my opinion. When I got home, no body in my family noticed anything different with my hair. That's because my natural black hair was covering all the highlights beneath it. I mean...if I wanted it to look "natural"....I could've just kept my black hair. Anyways, as I was thinking about what I should do the next day, I got an e-mail from them saying that if I'm not satisfied with the coloring results, I can go back and re-dye it within a week free of charge. And so, I decided to give them another chance (and I tell you, this was the worst decision that I've ever made). I went back to the salon and they assigned the same hairstylist to me. She didn't exactly try to figure out what the problem was. I told her I wanted the highlights to look more even and blended with my black hair and that I wanted some highlights to show on my top layer as well. She didn't seem like she knew what she was doing and she always needed her colleagues to help her. And so, I sat there for another hour hoping that it would turn out okay this time. When I was finished, I couldn't really tell if my hair looked better or not cause usually it would take awhile before you really adapt to it. So after I got home and for the next few days, I finally realized how bad of a job she did. I felt disgusted with how the highlights turned out. Yes, I could see the color this time. But some were lighter than others. It was VERY uneven even though I emphasized a few times to her that I liked to look more even. The color was terrible...it was orangey-amber and it created a huge contrast with my black hair. Some parts of the highlights even went horizontal too! I was very reluctant to go in the public the next few days and I did not want to go back to the salon again. Luckily, I found another salon (Sakura Salon) in downtown to help me fix my hair and the results were great by the way!
