I am not a supporter of ratio and that is what is happening here. I am a supporter of capacity in the classroom in any daycare setting. Overcrowding can lead to a chaotic classroom environment that is more difficult for the teacher to manage. The increased number of students leads to a greater likelihood of disruptive behavior and conflicts among students, especially with fewer resources to accommodate the extra students. Teachers in overcrowded classrooms often devote more time to dealing with behavioral issues and less time to teaching--something no teacher desires. This leads to aggression and high level of stress in the kids. This is exactly what I witnessed. There seemed to be this level of importance on videos and pictures taken throughout the day, which I support but that seems to get in the way of managing the classroom. At some points you had 3 caregivers in the room, 1 would be trying to teach curriculum to 5 students at a time and 1 one would be videoing the teaching while the other 1 was trying to manage the other 16 children in 4 different play centers. It is impossible. Also, this center does not provide a clinic area for sick children. I witness a child with a 102 fever sent back to the classroom full of other children to wait for the parent to pick them. Also, only management may speak with the parent about behavioral issues with the parents. I completely disagree with the approach and my reasoning are that it undermines the support team each child needs with the caregiver who is with the child on a daily basis more hours in the day that the working parent. It does take a team effort in the daycare setting and at home to encourage citizenship and to cultivate learning in each child. If I tell a parent on a daily basis that their child had a great day when in fact their child had been very aggressive towards multiple children the entire day, then I am lying to that parent. My point is this, I personally like the management team and people but I could no longer work there for the reason stated above. Again I don't think they are bad people but they can do much much much better.

I was thinking about things I like so that I can review them, because I want to get my Yelp count higher. Even though I have not had my kids at AIA for a couple of years, this school is one of the first things I thought of. I had two children in this school. The older one attended from K through 5. When she graduated, I had to take the younger one over to their new school as well, because it is impractical for me to have them in two different locations. We only left for logistical reasons. We love this school. I wish I was wealthy so that I could invest in this school and help them expand. Okay, now on to the meat of the review. This school attracts kids from several different cultures. They have very committed teachers. Their founder, Dixie, is one of the kindest people I have ever met. They use Montessori methods, but they are not afraid to adapt their system to meet the needs of each child. My older child learned to read and write better than some of my fellow graduate students! I credit this school for that. I will name a few of the awesome teachers they have (or have had), but I am sure the others are great as well: Mrs. Turner, Mrs. McDaniel, Mrs. Littlewood, and Mrs. Narayan. If you want a well-designed adaptive Montessori program for your kids - that teaches excellent life skills as well - this is the place to bring them. This school does have a Christian affiliation, which would have normally made me wary because we are UUs, not Christian. However, as is appropriate for an international school, religious participation is voluntary. The school had children from families that are Christian, Jewish, UU, Hindu, and Muslim (and probably others). It seemed that none of them experienced religious conflict. So, if you want to teach religious tolerance to your kids, this is a great place.

Unfortunately, there was none. The saving grace for us was my son's teachers, Mr. Rao and Mrs. Joshi. They were wonderful and we genuinely appreciated them. Beyond that, I was never particularly impressed with the administration or the overall experience. For a school that positions itself as a premier institution and has so many positive accolades, our experience was very different. To us, it felt like a pretty average/subpar school packaged and marketed as something much more. If you are considering AIA, just make sure you read every line of what you sign. Don't assume there will be any flexibility or understanding even when circumstances change within a matter of days.

Our son struggles with executive functioning and has thrived with the supportive routines; our daughter, a more typical learner, has also excelled. The curriculum is intentionally process-oriented, broken down into manageable segments so students gain mastery, not just memorization. There's a strong emphasis on organizational skills, note-taking (Cornell method), research skills, and effective study habits. The mandatory "Homework Hour" and use of assignment planners help students build discipline and self-reliance; as parents, we appreciate that most homework is completed at school. It's an excellent fit for students with dyslexia or ADHD, but also offers plenty of challenge--including Honors and AP options, for academically advanced or typical learners. St Francis sets high, but appropriate, expectations for all. A previous post mentioned the point system. This system is an amazing way to help students with accountability. The post mentioned 3-10 kids per week that might have to wear the uniform on Fridays. This point system is at the K-8 campus. That equates to about 1-2% of the kids each week. That means ~99% get their homework completed each night and don't have a behavior issue at school. We have not experienced any vaping or bullying, the staff, creates a safe community. Students and staff are respectful and kind. Both staff and admin are accessible, present on campus, and genuinely care about each child. Our experience with the school's college guidance program has been especially impressive; counselors work closely with students to chart a successful course to their desired college. If there's a weakness, it's that the campus buildings and grounds aren't new and flashy. It's important for prospective families to know that the academic excellence and caring community here far outweigh how our campus compares to some of the other newer private school campuses. If you're searching for a school that prioritizes strong values and a college preparatory path, St Francis deserves your attention. We are deeply invested in this community, and are grateful every day for what this school offers.
