We stayed on the side away from the lake but it's less than five minutes to walk to the lake and a nice view of mount hood. Lots of trees, so lots of shade. Its getting harder and harder to get a weekend reservation but I think they are putting in more Campgrounds. I know they are in the process of upgrading all the current campsites. I was told that would take place.... years ago, but they're actually doing it now. Timothy Lake is a very popular lake. The water is clean and clear. The fishing is good, depending on where the fish are that day. Even if you get skunked, it's still good to just sit and look at God's creation. So peaceful and beautiful. I catch crayfish when we go. My Wife and I are the only ones who eat them and that's fine with us. We scarf em down. Butter everywhere. Can't wait for next year. I have a new bait option I want to use. The Camp Hosts are always nice. I think they remember our little Smoo Bear and us from previous campouts. The grounds are always clean. There are also PGE Employees patrolling the grounds but also Clackamas County Sheriff's regularly roll through. So trouble gets rooted out. I've never had a problem. On occasion, people get loud. And the Hosts take care of it. I've seen people try and sneak in in the middle of the night and get busted. I always thought that was dumb to even try. You have to drive by the Host Site just to get in. Dumb. You cant bring your own wood! If your caught. They'll make you throw it all out or leave. They sell bundles of wood for $6.00. I figure you'll need $18.00 of wood a day. More if your planning on cooking over a wood fire. Most site's allow up to 6 tents per site. You can have 1 Vehicle per site, any other Vehicle's will be $6.00 a day per Vehicle. They get you from both sides. It seems a bit spendy but after weeks of work. Your sitting next to the fire. Beer in hand, laughing with family. You realize how happy you are to be camping and you thank God for your life. My Sister is our Reservation Queen. She's already planning on being ready to reserve our next trip when that date arrives. God Bless you Red. I am ready to put in vacation days. Cant wait for our next campout.

Paved Roads. More Restrooms. New Campground Configurations. Its all awesome. Some of the Campgrounds No Longer Have Public Day Use. Hoodview Campgrounds is one of those. You can't even use the Boat Launch unless registered for Hoodview Campgrounds. They Will Ticket You. Ive seen several tickets passed out this summer. My Wife and I just spent 6 days chillin in some awesome summer weather. It rained one time during the middle of the night and not for long. It wasn't too windy and the water was amazing. BEWARE Always wear foot protection. I found several rusty fish hooks, broken glass and rusty metal near the shore. I've also made a pledge to stop using Lead Fishing Weights. In that, I've started collecting lead from the waters I fish. This weeks haul was about 12 ounces of lead from the waters edge. Timothy Lake has an amazing bounty. I will do my part in keeping it clean. I caught a fare amount of crayfish. We cooked them up and most everyone ate some. Our two littles (8 & 10) both ate crawfish. I was going to fish but had to much fun hanging out with my family to leave them behind. That's been the reason a lot this year. I'm always glad to come home and shower but I can't wait to go back camping. In fact. We're going back in two weeks. Nice.

Had a great camping trip to Gone Creek last weekend. Not sure why they call it Gone Creek since…read moreit's on Timothy Lake, but whatevs. Located just under 2 hours from Portland at the feet of Mount Hood, Gone Creek is a perfect weekend camping destination. Upon arrival we found our site we had reserved. Only about a quarter of the site is reservable with the rest of it being first-come first-served. The park host said that you really need to get there mid-week to get a non-reserved spot. The sites here are great. They are large and you don't feel crowded in the campground. Our site had a driveway to fit 3 cars and 3 tents for our group. You have your standard picnic table and firepit available as well. This campground does not have showers, so be prepared to have grungy hair by the time you leave. They also use vaulted toilets. There are water spigots within a few steps of all the campsites for fresh water too. During our trip, we fished along the shore and got our haul of a dozen rainbow trout. I saw a bunch of boats out on the lake, but we were the only ones I saw reeling them in! The lake is great for an afternoon swim. It's the right temperature and felt really good on an 88 degree day at the campground. Definitely worth checking out if you're a camper.

Anyway, you DO have to drive through the campground to get to the excruciatingly small parking area for the Lil Crater trail, but the areas are separate things. Trail is less than a quarter mile walk to what proved to be a crystalline azure pool of water that looked at least 70 feet deep -- though I wouldn't know actual depth, I didn't measure it. Probably depends on the light of the day, but what we saw was magical; be warned that it is out of the way, on a pretty rough forest service road, so unless you're in the area, maybe not worth the drive.

Trillium…read morehas been plagued lately with fisherman that throw fish carcasses back in the water, resulting in a stench during high heat, and the need to navigate around them. Trillium also gets mountain run-off, so it's colder. Frog Lake is exactly what it sounds like. There are marshy areas with tadpoles and frogs. The nice thing is that it isn't always super packed, there's always somewhere to settle, and the water is easily accessible. I frequent Lacamas in Camas, and the downside is that the main entrance is super rocky. Frog Lake isn't, which makes it kid-friendly. $10 to park. Bathrooms are basically outhouses. Dumpster on the main road before leaving. The road has some major potholes on the way up, but hopefully you have an SUV.

It's a beautiful day here in the 70s and the views over the lake of Mount Hood are spectacular. Wish we had kayaks with us, towels ...families are enjoying the water. Many brought chairs, umbrellas, grills, tables, water sports equipment... The was a friendly man driving a golf cart maintaining this picnic area.

If your thing is almost no effort for huge reward, consider checking out Umbrella Falls…read more Right now you can park at Meadows and you'll see the trail sign. A narrow, (worn out) paved, and very short trail will take you right down to the falls in a minute. The setting is gorgeous and the falls are stunning. From the top when you see the little stream it's hard to believe that small amount of water can make such a beautiful and wide display. You can also add Umbrella into other hikes should you crave more of an adventure...adding in Sahalie Falls makes a great trip. But almost anyone can take the short trip down to Umbrella right now...highly recommend.

Hiking around a ski bowl in the off season is definitely cool. Something kinda creepy about those…read morechair lifts just sitting there above the abundant foliage and creeks. This hike also has some amazing waterfalls. I took the "Umbrella Falls, Sahalie Falls and Timberline Trail Loop" as it is described in AllTrails. It's a 10.7 mile loop with a good combination of easy, tree covered strolling and uphill pushes that are strenuous but not hard. I started at Hood Meadows, at the Umbrella Falls trailhead, but you can start many places. I recommend either downloading g or printing a map - there are many cross trails and it would be easy to take an unintentional detour. I went counterclockwise, so Umbrella Falls was literally the first thing I saw. Steps from the parking area. So beautiful, just picture ready. A couple miles along I came to Sahalie Falls. The scramble down to the base was super sketchy, so be careful! It's truly one of the prettiest waterfalls in the Mt. Hood Forest. Remember I said be careful? Ya, I took a hard fall at a small creek crossing. Don't be like me, test that footing and log before you put your weight on it. I fell sideways into the creek, then several more times trying to get out of it. I'm pretty bruised but okay - it's a reminder how the simplest thing can still be dangerous. Nature don't care about you, so be cautious out there. I know I'll be a lot more wary of where I place my feet. It was a warm day and nothing was broken, so I dried out and carried on. Hey, can I just say - my phone was in a Unicorn Beetle Supcase and it survived the ordeal without a scratch. Sexy and functional, I'll never put my phone in any other case (I'm a former Otterbox user. Go Unicorn Beetle or bust!) This hike is one of those you can only do when the snow is gone, and right now the weather is perfect. Enjoy!

We really lucked out when we asked the ranger at the Multnomah Falls Historic Lodge for campground…read morerecommendations. The ranger told us about Green Canyon, her favorite campground in the Mt. Hood area. We weren't sure how to get there, so we stopped by the Zigzag Ranger Station (503) 622-3191 for directions and information to get there. To get there, take Hwy 26 to Forest Road 2618 (about a mile past the town of Wemme). Follow 2816 for about 4 miles to the campground. It's a first come, first serve campground. Sites are $20 a night for a car. It's $10 with a Golden Age (senior) Pass. Sites 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 are on the river side. We were lucky enough to snag site 8, which was the last river spot available. Sites allow one car, and if you have 2, then you'll have to pay an additional $8 to park the car. There are only pit toilets, no running water, no RV hookups, but there is a dumpster available. The surrounding is absolutely GORGEOUS!! It's so picturesque, beautifully green and quiet. With trees all around and the roaring river as the background, you really get the feeling of being remote. I highly, highly recommend camping at Green Canyon and be sure to try and get one of the sites near the river. If you have time, you might want to relax by the river or go on a hike.The trail is right by the river.
