There is a wonderful trail around the lake that gives you great views of the water and of Mount Hood in the distance. It is also a great place to go camping, go for a swim, or kayak out in the water. You could tell it was a very lively place that many people enjoy and all the staff there was very friendly and cooperative. Saturday the 13th of September was a picture perfect day for a hike around this lake with my family. I wanted to come to this area with them and walk around the lake, but thought maybe I'd only make about 1/2 mile. At nearly seventy, I was ambitious and determined to enjoy this early Birthday celebration with them. Arriving, we parked and took some pictures, then set out to do the walking (4 of us) around the lake. Mt Hood was spectacular and there were so many people on the water on paddle boards, canoes and the like. The sky was a perfect blue and there was a light breeze, 72 degrees, perfect hiking weather! We enjoyed chatter, seeing many sweet dogs and kind people along the way and before we knew it, we were already back at the start, hiking two miles. The hike was not difficult as there were no inclines and it make me feel so accomplished. A day I'll always remember. read more

Trillium Lake (Oregon), with Mount Hood as a stunning backdrop, is one of the most popular destinations in Mt. Hood National Forest. We visited on a Tuesday in early September, 2024, around noon, and it was quite busy and the main parking area was already close to full but we did find a space. We started by walking the easy, kid-friendly 1.9 loop trail that goes around the lake. It is mostly wide and flat, and included many boardwalks over swampy areas. We also enjoyed a picnic lunch at one of the picnic tables that was lakeside with a view of Mount Hood and of the kayakers and paddleborders on the lake. (We noticed that kayaks were available for rent -- $25 for one hour for a single; $35 for a tandem). There is a $10 parking fee, which was collected at a tent on the entrance road. Interagency passes are not accepted. You can combine an outing here with a drive up to Timberline Lodge or a hike to Mirror Lake. read more

A Picture-Perfect Lake! LOCATION: The drive from Portland to the Mt. Hood area was absolutely beautiful! We paid for an all-day pass, which I believe was $10. We arrived around noon on a random weekday in autumn, there was plenty of parking available. EXPERIENCE: There's a wooden trail that circles the lake, although not all of it is paved. It's accessible for anyone, but I recommend stopping to enjoy the viewpoints along the way. You'll likely see kayakers on the lake (you'll need to bring your own kayak), and there are campgrounds in the surrounding area. OVERALL: I would love to come back and kayak soon! If you're in the city, this spot is definitely worth a day trip, even if its a 2-3 hour drive. read more

Gorgeous lake with incredible views of Mount Hood. Seems like a very local spot with lots of people enjoying their summer afternoon either swimming, kayaking, or sunbathing. There is a campground as well. There is a path that is supposed to go around the entire lake but some parts were inaccessible while I was there. Regardless, was still able to take a nice long walk around the lake and find a quiet beach portion that wasn't too busy to read a book and swim. The view is spectacular. I arrived maybe 8:30am on a Saturday and the parking lot for day use was filling up. There was a park employee walking around near the parking lot - I purchased the day use pass from her to put in my car. She only accepts cash or check. I walked about half of the perimeter of the lake. The path is overgrown and they're still constructing the boardwalk in some parts. I witnessed a wedding. Next time, I'll bring a paddle board or rent a kayak (unfortunately the rental here opens at 10). read more

Camping here is ideal, but know there are no showers or flushing toilet, but vault toilets do exist. As of June 2024 the water is broken so you'll have no water in the campground for the time being. Eh, I know folks rave about this spot, but I guess it depends on what you're looking for. Yes, the views of Mt Hood lording over the crystal blue waters of the lake are magnificent, but how much of that you'll see is weather-dependent (as you can tell from my photos), and if you go on a weekend? Prep yourself for crowds, because as you know Trillium is only about an hour and a half from Portland so everyone and their screaming 6 year old will be there if it's a sunny Saturday. Bring a kayak (or rent one there) for a cooler view of the mountain but know that the lake isn't all that big. For a more satisfying hiking experience, take the Trillium Lake Loop rather than just sashaying lazily down the boring paved access road to the lake. The good news is that if you're camping, the campground is sited nicely, close to the lake with a good layout amongst the trees. read more

You have all seen the pics and when you visit in person, it is just as gorgeous! Especially in a clear day. Mount Hood stands tall and proud with her winter coat, making a magnificent backdrop to the pristine waters of Trillium Lake. My only regret is that I lived in Portland for 22 years before visiting. I know! What the heck is wrong with me? It's about an hour and 20 minute ride from downtown Portland. Once you get off I-84, the scenery along the way is beautiful as you make your way out of the denser populated areas, through Sandy, and up the mountain. There are several spots where Mt. Hood reveals herself and you can safely pull over to snap an amazing shot. Signs to Trillium Lake are well marked, just follow the, When you get to Trillium Lake, there are several different areas to park. i chose to park in the Dam area as this is where you get the money shot! In addition to the small parking lot that fills up by 11am, you can park along the driveway. People come and go all the time so spaces free up. Wherever you park, walk to the kiosk and fill out and pay the required day pass. Put $10 in the envelope and drop box, and the receipt on your dash. They absolutely patrol and ticket. The $10 car fee is well worth it! From the dam, the most magnificent view awakes! Literally, breathtaking. I loved watching various people approach and immediately smile and stand in awe. It's as beautiful as the pics you have seen! Lots of people kayaking, fishing, playing in the water or just sitting and picnicking along the bank. The water is calm and clear, but cold! There is a kayak kiosk to the right of the dam area and they rent by the hour 7 days a week during the summer, one or two people kayaks. There is a 2 mile trail along the river with different yet equally spectacular views from many vantage points. The trail is flat and easy to follow, most anyone can handle the trail and you can go as far as you want. Views ofthe lake on one side and lots of picnic tables and camp sites on the other side for the entire way around. Facing the mountain, I started to the right and feel this is where you get the most glimpses of Mt. Hood and all the vibrant kayaks on the lake. On the other side, there is an area under construction and you can not pass. There are several bathrooms located in the parking lots but no running water so bring hand sanitizer. Already planning a trip back with friends visiting from New Jersey. We will walk the trail, go kayaking and picnic. Afterwards I'll take them to Timberline Lodge which is about 12 miles away so we will make a full day of our Mt. Hood adventure. read more

In my original review of Trillium Lake, I wrote that my wife would demand to come here if she ever saw a picture of the lake. I don't think she ever saw that picture. But we did get a chance to visit Oregon. And I did take her - and my daughter - to the prettiest Oregon lake I've ever seen. We weren't here long. Certainly not long enough for me. Both were tired from running around all these waterfalls at the Columbia River Gorge, and just wanted to doze off on our way to our next campsite. I almost had to force my teenage daughter out of the car. Then she saw the lake . . . and said "Whoa." Both ladies were in awe of the sight. A mommy nearby took our family fotoe, then asked if I could take her family's fotoe. The daddy then informed me that they were visiting from The Netherlands, and this was one of the places they made it a point to visit. Trillium Lake's reputation extends beyond the pond. Now that you're on this page on Yelp, it's likely that you've also seen a picture of the lake. It's much better in person. Big warning: They have a campground. And when I first started planning on the trip, this was the first place I tried to make a reservation for. Two months in advance. And each of the 69 sites was booked every night of the summer. You will need a park pass but the rangers were waiting at the entrance to the road where you could purchase one for $10. There is a trail that circles the lake for an easy hike. We took the path on the right if you're facing the water and it was closed for repairs a mile or so in but we captured some great pictures anyway. There were lots of swimmers, kayakers and canoes on the lake but it wasn't over crowded by any means. My daughter loved seeing the salamanders in the water so look for them if you have kids. As a tourist, I'd highly recommend visiting Trillium lake to hike. The trail itself is a very kid-friendly trail and mostly level for the entire length. The Trillium Lake Trail goes around Trillium Lake and through Trillium Lake Campground. There are great views of Mount Hood along this trail. Ok first of all DO NOT follow the address on this Yelp page! It will literally take you through the camping areas and to a dead end. Instead just follow the highway and you will see a sign that says trillium lake. If you are still uncertain you can get the map coordinates from this website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/mthood/recarea/?recid=53634. Note that these coordinates take you to the campgrounds. If you are just visiting for the day you can drive to the next driveway and you will be at the day use parking lot. If you want to get that iconic shot of the mountain on the lake I would suggest driving up even further to the Trillium lake dam. Yes it all gets a little confusing! Parking is $10. Cash only. You fill out a form and envelope. Leave the form on your dash and the envelope with the money goes into a drop box. So we ended up coming here for our family photos. It was on my wish list since last year when I came across the iconic photo of the mountain backdrop along the lake! When we came at around 6:45 pm there was ample parking at the dam. There were a bunch of people there with their dogs. It was a little chilly, but not bad. While walking along the lake we passed by a few hikers and a bunch of people camping. There were some people on kayaks in the lake as well. Note that there are kayak rentals at the dam area. While wandering the area we saw some ducks with ducklings. We also saw some birds and squirrels. It is a really beautiful place and it only takes about 10 minutes to walk the trail. 20 minutes total to go there and back. However we spent an hour or so in the woods getting some amazing photos! I would definitely recommend coming here because it is definitely a beautiful sight to see! During our travels through Mt. Hood's scenic byway's twists and turns, we came to a stop at the National forest's Zig Zag Ranger station; a place I thought was the access point of the day's adventure. The initial plan was a short hike down a scenic trail leading to a majestic lake and mountain visage. It was our first venture to a national forest and we wanted to stop at the ranger station to get a map. At the Zig Zag guest services counter, we struck up a conversation with a female ranger. We told her we were inexperienced hikers (us city slickers had 0 hiking experience) and that we initially had our hearts set on Mirror Lake, a trail that Yelp highly recommended. She diplomatically informed us that we had arrived too late to get access to that trail (it was around 1pm.) We needed to arrive much earlier to get to Mirror Lake. Sensing our disappointment, she suggested an alternative. I had my heart set on a lake with a mountain view. She then turned and pointed to a picturesque framed photo of a mountain reflected in a lake. My husband and I oohed and aahed. The ranger then said, "That's Mt. Hood and Trillium Lake." It was perfect! We were provided with a trail map which assured a short and easy hike. Reinvigorated, as we were just about to leave the station, a final concern came to mind. Bears. I turned to ask the ranger, "Should we be worried about bears?" Without blinking an eye, she said "No. There may be bears but they are very rare." We returned back to our SUV and continued the 20 minute drive on Mt. Hood's Scenic Byway (Highway 26) to Government Camp. Once at Government Camp, we found an exit sign leading to the entrance for Trillium Lake. The winding pathway to the lake is another 10 minute drive until you reach ranger checkpoint. At checkpoint, the rangers will inspect each car for a National Forest day pass. NOTE: At all campsites and trails, you will need a Northwest Forest day or ePass for entry. Those can be purchased ahead of time online at (discovernw.org) or in person at the Zig Zag Ranger station for $5. Make sure you have one filled out before entering forest grounds. Trillium Lake is a beginner level trail. It's mostly flat elevation with soft grounds. There are a few wooden platforms along the way. The entire length is just shy of 2 miles (which is far less taxing than Mirror Lake) but you don't have to walk all of it. If you're tired, you can always turn around and walk back towards the entrance and parking lot. With adequate signage and a good number of visitors during the summer, it's almost impossible to get lost here. The path loops around Trillium Lake. There are plenty of viewing decks along its perimeter so you can take that vacation worthy photo/selfie. As promised by the ranger, I have to say the views are stunning. Make sure to bring a camera and binoculars. We also noticed it's a popular trail for families as we saw many of them eating lunch at one of their several picnic alcoves. The watersport activities are endless here. It's a BYO (Bring your own) gear establishment. Walking though the trail, we noticed guests fishing, swimming, kayaking, rafting, and we even caught a family hanging out in a swan floatie! We sensed them having a relaxing time in one of the most beautiful parts of the national forest. Remember to bring shades, bug spray, and sunscreen. We went mid-July and the mountains are usually cooler by about 10-12 degrees versus the city. I'd also recommend bringing a light sweater just in case. Most of all come early if you want to land a parking space and a prime picnic spot. It can get frustrating if you've come all this way only to not have a place to park your car! It's a man made Lake so it has a marshy fish smell the water was brownish so we didn't stay to swim. The wildlife and views are phenomenal I watched an eagle dive and catch what I assume was a trout as it glistened in the sun as it flew off to the canopy nearby to feast. Trillium Lake is beautiful. In the summer, Trillium is a beautiful sunny playground. In the winter, Trillium is a beautiful snowy wonderland. The hordes of people around it are not as beautiful, but don't worry since you're not there to see them. You're there to see Mt. Hood from a deep blue lake surrounded by Oregon conifer trees. There are two ways to visit Trillium Lake: just for a day or as a campground. Open season for the campground is Mid-May through the end of September. Day use of the area is $5 per day per vehicle. While over-night camping sites range from $22-$90. There are extra charges ($8) for multiple cars at the campground, too. Note, that in the winter a Sno-Park Pass is required. To avoid the summer Day Use fee, use an annual pass like the Northwest Forest Pass, Interagency Pass, or Golden Access Pass. The 63-acre Trillium Lake Campground and Day Use Area is great for hiking, boating, bicycling, and swimming. There is a large boat ramp in the day-use area and a smaller one at the campground. Fishing is allowed following local and state laws. The 2-mile Trillium Shoreline Trail goes completely around the lake and was a mix of accessible, rough, shaded, and sunny sections. Trillium Lake is about 40 miles southeast of Portland, OR in the Mt. Hood National Forest at an elevation of 3,600 feet. About 40 miles SE of Portland, not far from Government Camp deep in the Mt Hood National Forest you will find one of the most beautiful mountain lakes and camp grounds by the name of Trillium Lake. Boating, fishing, swimming and relaxing are the things here. There is a nice trail around the lake that is approximately 2 miles that you can hike or bike around. You can bring the kayak or row boat as well to enjoy. The campground is well maintained and there are some really nice lake view sites. What. A. Beautiful. Place. Extremely scenic and the landscape is just flat out incredible. When hiking with kids, one finds hikes that are usually three miles or less, or said kids (in this case an opinionated ginger) will let you know what she thinks of said hike. This one is very much kid approved, as well as the grown ups attached to her for the day. Unlike the waterfall hikes we usually do, this one is a pretty level 2-3 mile hike with sights to see everywhere! Trees, marshland, and quite a few Trillium (the three-leafed flowers growing all over the place) to take just incredible pictures of. If you're a photog, like myself, then this places has the views. This was the closest I've been to Mt. Hood and the way it loomed over the lake was just amazing. The hike itself started off fairly quickly. We were on the far side of the lake fast and we thought the hike would be a shorter one than intended, but the trail veers away from the lake and you go through marshlands and we saw some wildlife about. The weather was perfect and there are plenty of places to go camping. We saw set-ups everywhere. People were boating, swimming and fishing. This is definitely a place to visit again and again. A beautiful lake that's easily accessible if you're directionally challenged like me and my fellow derp. We made a brief pit stop to Trillium Lake this past holiday weekend and it was quite warm outside, approaching 100°F! The view is nice despite the summer crowds, and it would've been nice to canoe or kayak along the lake, if only timing permitted. The PNW will always hold a special place in my heart due to accessibility and breathtaking views compared to the barren and burn areas of Southern California. I mean, the grass is always greener, eh? Feces! Toilet paper and people! But a gorgeous view of Mt Hood! There seems to be a disconnect between the park service and the needs of the people - everywhere you look there are shallow graves that seem to house the feces of visitors past. Solemn totems of white toilet paper, McDonalds napkins and anything else absorbent available, stand silent guard over a lack of park planning. Literally HUNDREDS of campers and THOUSANDS of visitors... and not one port-a-potty? you can camp and hike here too. and fish! and boat! and swim! near the feces... There was a dumpster but no port-a-potty. The trail around the lake was amazing - you could walk around the closed part if you were smart about where you put your foot to avoid rotten planks. I was looking for a relaxing spot with a killer view of Mt. Hood. After a quick Google search , I landed in this beautiful spot! It appears the location pin on Yelp is off from where the beach / lake front is. I used Google / Apple maps and found it perfectly. I didn't follow the signs to 'campground' since I wasn't camping . I followed the signs to day parking or day entry I forget exactly what it says but you'll know it when you see it. Follow the road to the parking stall along the road JUST before you see a break in the tress on your right / left and before you cross a makeshift land bridge. Park and walk down to that bridge and you'll see the view of the lake and Mt. Hood! From here you'll see why it's also called Mirror Lake since the reflection of the mountain can be seen on the water on a clear / not windy day. A nice flat, easy trail around the lake to see even better views . People swimming, canoeing , bbq, fishing and relaxing . Overall great spot to relax and catch the BEST view of Mt. Hood!! read more
