There's a wonderful little place we stayed at in Orange called Cotehele which is about a thousand years old and comfy as anything. Truly magic place especially in Winter under snow. We had one of our anniversary holidays at Hatherly Birrell Collection in Lonny* which amps up heritage, art and style. But..... The Dairy is better. For a start it's in Queenstown, and nowhere on Earth is there anything as spectacular as the little town on Lake Whykikamoocow under the Remarkables. I'm so glad Gen Y didn't find the 'Remarks' or they would be called 'The Like, Awsomes' Second it is authentic. It used to be a Dairy until a couple of blokes did it up and turned it into a boutique hotel. Its got history and class. To burn. Third, its now run by two of the nicest people you will ever meet even if one of them is a Kiwi. Hi Bevan! BTW, how did you get so lucky as to marry a gorgeous Aussie like Kim? CarnthaWallabies. Nothing is a problem. Every whim is their command. The view from our room was better than TV. We just sat and looked out the window. After a day's skiing we would fall into the hot tub and Kim would bring us champagne flutes and an ice bucket. Fresh towels and robes provided. The location is perfect. Walking distance to ski field buses, and the middle of town is a two minute roll down the hill, but its still quiet enough that you can't hear the Irish and Pommy backpackers at two in the morning, a problem in others Hotels, or so I heard on a chairlift. The brekky is touted as a feature on other review sites and rightly so. It is drop dead fantastic and it means you don't need lunch - which for me is extraordinary. I don't know what they have done to their pigs in the Shaky Isles but my God they make super bacon! And Elvis is always happy to load a few more rashers on board. With a smile and a chat. A very cool guy indeed. With a car that has been diagnosed as a 'ticking time bomb' which he drives to the ski fields. Brave man, I assure you. Driving to The Remarkables is like a double black run for experts only! Afternoon tea in front of a cracking open fire is wonderful. Little home made cakes and scones, or so Keeno tells me - I was having a nap at that time of day. Or Skiing. Thats the thing about this place, its just so friendly. Everyone is blissed out, just enjoying the town and the hospitality. I reckon that The Dairy is the new benchmark for hospitality. The rooms are great, the bathrooms are spotless and the hot water is strong and endless. I tested it. Wi Fi is amazingly quick and trouble free. I heard our American friends Brittany and Andrew thank Bevan and Kim for helping with their heli hiking, bungy jumping, jet boating, and glacier flights. Our Brazilian neighbours could be seen wandering around the Library and just staring into the distance. Bevan recommended some places to eat, most of which I had already found on Yilp***, with the notable exceptions of Belle Cucina and Eichardts. That Eichardt recommendation in itself earned him hero status with me. At least until the World Cup. What a place! I must say my first impression of our room was a bit underwhelming judging by the furnishings and carpet but by the end of our stay it had grown on me. The best feature of the hotel and the money shot on the website is the beautiful sunny patio in back of the hotel which looks like an inn in Tuscany. We learned the property is a little over 20 years old and the current owners have been operating it for around 2 years. Pros: -great location, very close to town so walking is easy yet you are just far enough away from all the buzz in town -wonderful warm welcome by the hosts and throughout our stay -large size room with a sunny balcony -very large bathroom with updated fixtures -wonderfully fast free Wi-Fi -they offer a continental breakfast beginning at 7 along with a chef-prepared hot breakfast to order which was very nice -beds were decent although I would have preferred a different style of pillow Cons/Opportunities: -judging by our room (#3) most of the furnishings and fixtures look to be original-perhaps time for some upgrades -carpet a bit shabby in spots. -sound insulation from the hall (our room was very near the main door) wasn't the best. -annoying and noisy bathroom fan comes on with the light but runs an additional 7 minutes after the light is off (yes I timed it because it was That annoying). -because it's an older hotel the location and accessibility of electricity for charging gadgets isn't the best -like most businesses in the area, no A/C but even on hot days opening the big patio doors overnight let in a pleasant breeze Bottom line: the great location is the reason for staying here. All of the major tours and activities will pick you up in front or in downtown. The breakfast included is made to order and delicious. You can get eggs and bacon, pancakes, or several other options. There are remarkable views from the balconies of the rooms. The rooms are clean and neat but are somewhat small and sparsely appointed. However, if you are spending a lot of time in your room you are really missing out on all of what Queenstown has to offer.

The carpet had stains and the wall paper looked like it was put over outlets and things before put on the wall. I ordered a wedge salad and literally most of it was the bottom of the head of lettuce. I went to make coffee the next morning and there was still water in the pot from whoever was in the room prior to us. There was something growing on the other door to the bathroom, still not sure what it was, picture provided. The hallway was dark and had old carpet and a strange smell. There was only one robe for two people. I accidentally went into the employee lounge thinking it was the bathroom, the employee said "you don't want to go to the bathroom in here, it's not so clean". It was so dirty, it was disgusting, and that is where the workers change and get ready for the guests. For the money we paid for this room, it was one of the worst rooms I have ever stayed in.

As such, a great option for lodging is the YHA Queenstown Central, party of the YHA New Zealand group. They offer perks for worldwide members, so be sure to ask. This facility is nicer than a typical hostel, with private room and private bathroom options. Once you get past the checkin desk and sparse lobby, it feels like a hotel. Our room was clean, and even had a view of the lake. The restroom was spacious and very modern. There isn't much in the way of amenities here, it's just a cheap, safe, and clean place to stay. They do not have elevators, so be ready to carry your luggage. We had some issues with noise as our room was below the common kitchen area, which despite being closed, was cleaned early morning. More than anything, this place is convenient to everything worth doing in town. For people venturing outside of the town, Uber is the easiest bet. There airport shuttles to/from the Frankton Airport just a 15 minute drive down the road. The Skyline is also just a quick walk away. We'd stay here again!

The ladies were very friendly, even going as far as extending their daily happy hour to accommodate our tardy arrival, as well as helping us to select a restaurant and reservations for dinner. Our room was small, but served the purpose, and the view of the lake/town from it could not be beat. The rest of the house is quite inviting, with many places to dig into a book, mingle, or enjoy the views. The location is fairly central, although be aware that the B&B is located on a steep road down to the central part of town, so be prepared with the proper shoes and for a bit of effort.
