I was able to get an appointment within a couple of days which is good and bad. Josh cut my hair, very short. I called twice the next week because he left the back long and I wanted it trimmed. I've hopped around from barber to barber the past 10 years living in a few different places and never really found a barber I loved that could cut my hair under $30. Moved to Boulder a few years ago and Al's was the second place I tried. Instantly knew I found my spot as soon as they busted out the feather razor. All the barbers are trained the same way and I've never had a bad haircut from the 3 barbers I've seen. Originally went to Carlee and as the other reviewer below stated, she's the bomb. She took more artistic liberty to make you look fly. Now I go to Alicia, who I kind of stumbled into because shes works during the time I usually go. She always does a nice job and is super detailed oriented. Admittedly more money than I usually care to spend for a haircut but it's worth it IMO. I figure I'll lose my hair someday. Worst $50 I have ever spent. If you go here, make sure to show them at LEAST 100+ GOOD photos of the haircut you want because they obviously can't follow verbal directions. I will never go here again and I hope you listen to my advice. To add to this, when I got home I literally had to shave my head because it was so far from what I wanted and looked honestly bad. I went here a while back on the advice of my wife. Al wasn't there. And without Al, I have to dispute the idea that this is really a barber shop. I would call it a hair salon that employs (apparently) one barber. I just wanted a basic haircut, beard trim, and shave. I was told they're all booked so come back in 3 hours. I did. Then they could see me. The stylist I had was polite and friendly. But she wasn't a barber, and couldn't use a straight razor. That requires a barber's license, she explained. Well, I came to "Al's Barber Shop" thinking they employed barbers! Apparently not, at least not that day. She also seemed pretty flummoxed by the whole facial hair thing in general. They gave me a "new customer discount" which brought the price down below $30. But even that price is a tough pill to swallow when they could only provide 2 of the 3 services I wanted, and only after a 3 hour wait. So I won't be going back. I'm still looking for a traditional barber shop - one that employs licensed barbers, handles drop-in customers, and knows how to trim manly beards. read more

The only place I ever got my hair cut in Boulder. It's a man-salon; comfortable yet upscale. You'll pay for what you get, but it's worth it. This place is an American Crew joint, and they have a large selection of product for those who use it. Al is the man to go to, but everyone else there is extremely competent. And if you're up for it, throw down the extra for a shave. Al is a master, and though he's a little more expensive than the rest of the folks, he's a pleasure to talk to, and he's a master with both a straight-edge and with scissors. I've got to go against the grain of the other reviewer's here... I tried Al's several times over the course of a couple years. My intitial visit stemmed from the positive reviews online, and succeeded in gaining my trust. But perhaps that was the quality of the specific man who gave me the cut, because every cut since then has been far sub-par. Sure, the place has a cool ambiance and the stylist conversation's are decent. However, at the continued explicit request not to cut anything resembling a bowl, each girl in the subsequent cuts could not master that task. It was hard to clarify the instruction during the cut, and particularly at the end because of the way they tussle the damp hair and provide it 'style'. A shower later, and the crop look's like cut wheat. Now, I'm a simple man, and perhaps my hair is on the somewhat difficult scale to control, but I don't use product and don't want to. Flipping through all their style books, I've never found anything I desire. Pretty much, just cut the hair shorter, layer it and avoid any tricks. I'll help make decisions as we go along as best I can. In the end, I will not be returning to Al's. The cuts received were worth $12, far less than the $35 charged. read more

Nice looking place. Needed a basic men's haircut at short notice, was willing to pay up to 50$! Al's had a "walk in's welcome" sign outside. Turns out this was not true and turned me away 2 hours before closing. Another barber Down the block did a great job at half the price and happily took me in 30 minutes before closing. read more

This is Alexis's boyfriend, John. I have been visiting Boulder from Boston this past week. A couple of days ago I decided I wanted a haircut so I began yelping. At the time, my hair was a little over a foot long and It started driving me crazy. After searching for a while, Al's barber shop seemed to be the best balance between practicality and quality. The yelp page was a bit misleading in the sense that there was no Al here... no male barbers at all actually. I was quite nervous to have my hair cut and while I was in the waiting area I felt my anxiety peak. I wanted a trim and some layers added to make my crazy long hair look a little more presentable. Almost immediately after I began talking with Carly, I felt my nerves relax. She seemed to know exactly what I wanted before I even explained it myself. She talked about how she does long haired guy cuts all the time which made me feel very comfortable. It was no surprise, when she finished the cut, that it looked exactly how I could have imagined it looking and even better. She just simply understood what I was going for and what I was about with seamless ease. If I lived here I would totally go back and now I know where to get my haircut upon returning to Boulder in the future. read more

Al has been cutting my mop for over a decade now and I highly recommend both the Boulder and Denver shops. Al's team is friendly and the barber shops are slick and cool, but not "hipster cool." Here is the deal with AL's that some reviews on here didn't quite get: this place is namely by appointment. You can walk-in, but chances are they're booked. If that turns you off in any way, then this isn't the place for you. You will need to do an appointment to get in here. Appointment by phone only takes about a minute to do, if you're wondering. Now, having said that, this possibly one of the best experiences one can get for their hair. I thoroughly believe the $30 is worth it just for the service alone-- minus the atmosphere, good people, discount on your first trip ($30 to $26) and quick service when you come in at your scheduled time. No, the service itself is what did it for me. This is a full experience, folks: you will get the haircut type that you want, with no chance of getting your hair butchered at all. I haven't seen a problem with any of the staff doing the hair, barber or not. I have never gotten Al, and the experience has just been wonderful. They first massage your head and wash it thoroughly: not with a spray bottle, but with an actual sink and everything. It is really relaxing, and takes the stress of the day right out of you. They do this twice: once at the beginning, and once at the end. They then use real tools to cut your hair (not just a random razor with an approximate number). They trim and fade in the right places, and understand what you want and what will also look good on your face. If the staff can do this, then God knows what Al can do. As for other services, they do do beard trims (which are really fantastic), and do gel up your hair for free if you wish. I dunno about women's haircuts here, but I know this is a must for the guys. Honestly, what Todd B. has described I haven't experienced at all yet. I think the main problem was the appointment stuff, but I have already addressed this at the beginning. You can also ask for a specific barber, too, such as Al. Might take longer, but you can choose someone, so you aren't entirely left to chance, folks. And to end, the place is just gorgeous in its decor. I know us guys don't really much care for aesthetics, but you don't realize how much it makes a difference in your mood and well being until you compare, say, Floyd, and its hectic atmosphere with that of Al's: you will come out knowing that you will not get a heart attack from this place, and actually feel, somewhat, that you have actually gain a few days of life back. The point? Just go over and try it once: I am sure you will enjoy the experience! :) read more

They are good at haircuts, not so good at basic customer service. I went in to buy some hard-to-find American Crew product. Apparently their hours depend on their mood that day. Although they claim to be open until 8:00 this day, when I get there at 7:30, I am told that they aren't really open and that they can't sell me anything because "the computer won't let me". Consistent hours are one of the most basic element of any customer service business. At the very least, post that hours vary. Call ahead. read more

I have been going to Al's for a few months now. The main reason for my transition from my previous barber, to Al's, was for a barber, Colter. Colter is extremely talented at his craft, is personable with his clients, and is always on time. Furthermore, his work station is always clean and sanitary, and I feel comfortable knowing that he takes pride in his work and maintains the tools needed to provide high caliber services. One of the worst haircuts I have received in a long time. I am really mad and I don't even know what to say. My hair looks uneven and patchy. I had a picture and explained what I wanted and my barber said they knew the exact look I was going for... I can't even describe the look I have right now. They styled it completely different from the photo(not even remotely close) and when I try to style it the intended way it looks more uneven. It's ridiculous and I don't think there's any way to remedy it right now. Again, I'm really mad and disappointed, it's the only thing on my mind. There's nothing I can do but wait like 8 months for it to grow out. I have no problem paying $38 and tip for a good haircut but if I could rewind time I wouldn't have tipped. I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit to Al's three months ago. I'm surprised I didn't yelp about it. A friend recommended me here and thank goodness that were taking walk-ins that day. The hair stylist listened patiently to my needs, asked me pointed questions, and then proceeded with the haircut. The end result was excellent and it lasted for 2 months in Europe.
