Oh god my poor arm Snapped in half like a pencil I need it fixed now (Altru may not be perfect, but until Aurora is up and running, it's the only show in town. So here's the good and the bad... GOOD: This hosptial has absolutely top-notch hospital staff. From the doctors, to the nurses, to the front-desk staff, you will get treated by the best at Altru. Trust me... this is NOT the case at hospitals in other cities. BAD: Patients are forever complaining about billing problems once they have left the hospital. This is SUCH a common complaint about Altru. Also, in order to try and stay financially viable, Altru is demanding more, and more, and more from their employees. This IS starting to have an impact on the quality of care given to patients. Even if you have a fantastic nurse, when he/she is SOOOO busy, they won't be able to give you the best care possible. So, make sure to give compliments to the staff when they are due. And if you DON'T think your care was optimal, send a little letter to the hospital and let them know why you were unhappy. I was super paranoid and needing emergency care from being drugged by a stranger, I remember the nurses not taking me seriously and I overheard them laughing about how I was attention seeking and just smoked too much weed, (which is not true, none of the tests even said I was positive for cannabis) another time, when I was a teen, I had a psychiatrist who found out that I told a nurse my parents were abusive and I was not safe at home, and he laughed in my face about it and brought my parents in and told them. Even if I had been lying, that is 100% not okay and or professional. He also laughed about me trying to overdose, saying I was "retarded" for thinking the meds I had taken would kill me. Then I had another psychiatrist who said I made up my mental illnesses and was faking needing my meds because they lost my records so they didnt have "proof" of me needing any medications. He was also very transphobic, which made me feel even more suicidal. I would not suggest going to altru for anything at any time. read more

Altru hospital got a huge makeover or actually they have a brand new building w ER and all other departments. Plenty of free parking for all. Valet parking options are free also. Inside it's modern and new and clean. As for the care of providers I don't know. But they have some medical staff from other states called locums bc it's not easy to attract every medical professional to cold Grand Forks ND. This is the second most cold city in the US after Fairbanks, Alaska. But the summers are amazing. But I will say the people here are very nice. And they are down to earth. This is true north and true Midwest. read more

This hospital is horrible. I would not recommend anyone to come here, Last year my grandma was transferred to the new hospital they built. The doctors didn't try to help. My grandma was on life support, and all the doctors had to say was "If it was my mom, I'd just let her go" he also said "It's in your best interest to just let her go." That whole night he was making comments about it. My family and I had high hopes and all they did was try and crush it. My mom says she seen one of the staff come in and unplug the machine that was helping her heart and plug in back in. I feel they did cpr so many times that night because of it. The doctors and nurses just stood by the door for 5 or 10 minutes as if they were waiting for something to happen, like they knew. At 6AM the doctor said he was going to do cpr one more time and if it didn't work, he was just going to let her go. (Keep in mind my mom was left to make the decision to not let her go and my grandma said no matter what happens if something were to happen, she wanted to be resuscitated). They did it anyways and that's all they said. After they called the time of death and the doctor came over and said he did everything he could and sorry for your loss and walked out. They were supposed to switch shifts at 7AM. I feel they did this, so the next staff didn't have to put up with it. My family and I were devastated and angry about this. They did cpr with my family and I in the room and it left us traumatized to this day to look back and remember. I'm writing my experience here so nobody else has to go through what me and my family did at this hospital. The staffs are careless and they pretend they're helping, but they're not. I feel they only care about your money. Not you or your loved ones. I recommend Sanford in Fargo if its life-threatening. Those are some staff that truly care. They give you comfort, things that this hospital does not. read more

I was in the inpatient psychiatry unit for a weekend when I didn't need to be. First of all, when I got there no one explained what was happening or what was going to happen. I am just a young adult in college and had no one there with me. Second, I was forced there in an ambulance, and they wouldn't explain why. To this day, I don't know who reported me for my mental health being "bad", but the way Altru handled it in my opinion was horrible. Third, they wouldn't listen to me when I said I didn't need to stay at the hospital and that I just wanted to go back to my dorm with my friends. They didn't give me a choice on whether or not I stayed for the weekend. I had to wait for over 8 hours before they even got me a room in the inpatient psychiatry unit. I had someone check on me when I got up there and that was about it. Someone did like a two minute check in with me every night and nothing else. Since I was in the inpatient psychiatry unit they took away my phone and all my belongings and I could only call my friends twice a day with their phones. I felt like no one cared about me, and being in there only made me worse. Not to mention the hospital bills I'm still working on paying back. I absolutely hated my experience here, and would not recommend Altru to anyone. read more

If you didn't read my original review, the short version is that I was in the emergency room in August of 2021 for a non-allergic reaction to a new medication. The nurse I was assigned for my stay, Amanda Asher, verbally belittled and abused me to the point where she was even shouting. It should be noted that, just one week after I posted my original review, Asher's name and notes were removed from the ER summary. After that experience, I simply told myself that she was just one bad apple and that throwing out the bunch wouldn't do any good. Sadly, I was wrong. The doctors that I've seen in the time since haven't been as aggressive as her, but they are certainly passive-aggressive. Each of the doctors that I've seen so far, whether it be primary care or the specialists, always play nice in person, but then lambast me in the after-visit summary. On top of this, a few of them have been bold enough to trash talk me to the nurses as soon as they step out of the room, saying things like "He won't give any straight answers" or "How many times have we seen him now?" As for the after visit summaries, they always make it a point to not only note how "anxious" I am, but also how my symptoms are almost always "anxiety-related". They always stop just short of calling me a hypochondriac. One last point is the numerous grammatical errors they make typing up these reports. I've read plenty (but not all) of these reports and they screw up the most basic words and sentence structures. For example, during one report the doctor correctly referred to me as "he". Yet halfway through they started calling me "she" (and I'm not transgender just to be clear) There's also sentences like "There is been", "as he has not 'no time'", etc. Keep in mind that these people do speak English as their primary language. It honestly baffles me how they could know so much yet mess up something so simple. Surely they could have someone proofread their notes. I would recommend going to Sanford instead, but their behavior is just as abhorrent. At this point, you may as well just drive to Minnesota for healthcare. read more

The only reason I'm giving them a three is because my prosthetic doctor is at all true and he is absolutely 100% the best besides that my regular doctor And her nurses are some of those people that love to throw pills at you. You have anxiety depression stress here go take these Xanax or benzos even though you don't like them and have stated that before but we are still going to prescribe. But yet I've had a severe sciatic nerve pain I have chronic back pain I am an amputee of my left foot so I have chronic severe back issues and I can't get nothing for pain go home take Tylenol drink some water here go through physical therapy and all this other crap just so we can give you tramadol which shouldn't even be considered a painkiller. Like I said oh you got depression oh you feel sad today oh you feel suicidal here take these Xanax. That makes 100% sense. read more

As a patient, I felt like the doctors didn't really listen to me. They, usually, seemed rushed during the examination/visit and didn't really take time to explain or answer questions. I've found much better care at other facilities. Try Sanford, or Essentia. They continue to exist because they're the only game in town. read more

Absolutely horrible place. When I got injured earlier this year, they forced me to stay overnight despite me repeatedly asking to be discharged. I was non critical, only needed stitches. They refused to release me. After the fact, when reading the doctors notes on my chart, found out they put me on suicide watch despite them saying no had no suicidal thoughts. They also never informed me that's why I was being held. Any time I said I wanted to leave, they said "you have to wait" bit never said why. They knew I wasn't suicidal, because they let me have a phone; that is against their policies. Short version, they contrived a bullshit excuse to force me to stay overnight, didn't tell me why I couldn't leave, then charged me for 24 hours of services I neither needed nor requested. They also have all sorts of inform wrong in my chart. I'm listed as an "active smoker" in one section (which I'm not), but later state that I quit smoking over a decade ago. They have me listed with a mental disorder I don't have, and don't have my actually disorder noted anywhere. They *gave* me a flu shot, and in my immunization records say I haven't had one. They misrepresented my injury's severity. I was told it barely grazed the fascia, but their notes say it actually penetrated the fascia and causes minor damage to the muscle. Now I can't pay the bill, they say my insurance tells them I made too much money to get coverage for that period (I was unemployed at the time); I can't get financial help from them, because they're asking for information I'm not comfortable providing, information that other people I know who received aid were not required to provide. And they ignore me. I'll send a message with a question and won't hear back from them, even when I wait a full week. I sometimes have to send multiple messages, just to get a cookie cutter response that doesn't actually answer my questions. When I've called, I get put on hold and left there so long I have to hang up because I have to go to work. They lie. They won't answer. They simply do not care about people. All they want is your money. If you're not in need of immediate, life saving treatment, go to Essentia in Fargo instead. read more

The Worst. I went in a few years ago when I was burned. It took several hours and I was given a double room that was covered in someone else's blood. Define Covered Glenda: On the walls. Pooled on the floor. I had to walk in it with my New Birkenstocks. I settled into my bed and a cleaner came in with a spray bottle and began spraying directly into the blood and droplets went in my direction. The Worst. Dr came in and walked through the blood and accused me of being a pill seeker. Treatment would have been nice. In Crookston, I have been seen by a physician who was writing off of a pad from a closed clinic & he was terminated that day by Sue Knudsen. No License. I was given; a prescription for Toridal- the injectable amount and not the amount- to take orally & the pharmacist came to my ER bed to tell me that my ALTRU Dr had misprescribed and if I took it I would be dead within 24 hours, lidocaine patches-told to leave them on & Jodi at thrifty whites said that I would be dead if I did it. Drs have been a week late with my refills and the ALTRU lab put the wrong amount of numbers on my pee sample so I was forced to see a kidney specialist for no reason. She called the lab and they corrected their error. I spoke with the new clinic director at ALTRU Crookston and she is another dumper. Poor social skills. She postured and told me she was going to call me back and that I had "better" answer the phone. Or else what? I told her to send a letter. She did not. Done. read more

Absolutely the WORST. Please, please drive the extra mikes to someplace else. You life literally depends on it! Rude and uncaring must be a prerequisite to be hired here. Tried several providers with similar results. They DO NOT care. If you suffer they still collect their $200,000+ salary. Don't risk it. The ER is atrocious. They do not triage. I was there in agony, doubled over and crying. The girl making out with her boyfriend went in before me as well as the woman talking and laughing on her cell phone. Absolutely pathetic. Altru Hospital, you are despicable, sorry, low down organization! In 2011 I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I had 2 surgeries and radiation treatment here. Three months ago I checked my credit and Altru Hospital had submitted 22, $2.00 delinquent charges to the credit bureau. I contacted Altru to inquire what these charges were for and they stated that it was for co-pays. Odd thing is, for 22 visits, I was never asked for a $2.00 co-pay. So, I offered to pay the total amount and they refused to take the money, stating that my account had been turned over to a collection agency. So, instead of reporting me once for a total of $44 they reported me 22 TIMES!. As if going thru cancer treatment wasn't devastating enough, Altru Hospital had to worsen my hardship by ruining my credit for 7 years. In addition to the above, they misdiagnosed me. Thank God, I followed up at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, TX. read more

Altru ER is terrible!! Dr German wouldn't find a proper split for my son who's 7-I had to go purchase one else where as he cut an adult one that left sharp jagged edges and put one layer of Coban on it, he didn't review X-ray results with me, I had to ASK which part of the finger is possibly fractured-with him still not clarifying, he wore his mask below his chin while also being in with a different patient getting covid tested, he recklessly applied the "splint" to my sons finger. This place is a complete joke!! I will never go here again with the "care" that we received!! read more

They get one star because they're the only hospital in town. They are the medical equivalent of Hilary vs Trump. Bad choice or no choice. Absolutely abysmal treatment of my wife and I having twins in the NICU is stressful enough but the doctors, while extremely intelligent people no doubt, have the bedside manner of a rabid wolverine. Essentia and Sanford in Fargo actually see their patients as patients and realize being in the hospital is stressful enough. There is a backyard garbage fire at 1200 South Columbia Road and it's called Altru "Health" System. read more

I have lived in 5 different States, been all over the world and can safely say Altru is the worst ER I have ever been at. Got at the ER at 3:45pm with a lacerated index finger and left at 10:00pm ( over 6hrs) with a poorly dressed finger after waiting 3 hours in the waiting room cause urgent care didn't feel comfortable stitching my finger another 3hrs to have a doc stitch the wound and an hour for a nurse to clean and dress the finger once the doc finished stitchin. The excuses we got was they forgot we were there. Next emergency I will drive 45 min away to another ER just to avoid Altru in Grand forks. read more

I went there with a respitory infection. They insisted it was my heart. They kept me two nights, did an angiogram, which showed no blockage. They sent me home with a 101* temperature. I had to go elsewhere to get treated. They are totally worthless. read more

Giving a one-star for their extreme charges. I know that medical care is expensive, and I'm grateful that I have insurance to help me afford these charges, however, I was disappointed in the $1200 charge I received for SUPERGLUE on my finger (yes, I should've done it myself; thought I needed stitches.) My insurance covered $1000 and Altru still insisted that I pay the $200 more. Comparing this with a late-night emergency room visit requiring 7 stitches in my shin, which was a total of $900, in a different town under a different health-care company, I am very disappointed in Altru, and if I had a choice, I would choose any other health company, simply for the billing procedures. read more

Go anywhere but here! I had no choice! I was broken (11 breaks in 7 ribs) & barely able to function & struggling to breathe & the nursing staff was exasperated with me when I didn't move fast enough. 0 stars! The doctors were rude & totally lacked empathy. IF I'd felt better I would have slugged the pompous asses! 0 stars for them, too! Seriously, how dare they think they're better than me!! And they NEVER listened! In 6 days, my husband who had to stay with me because I'm his caregcarer lost weight & strength he couldn't spare. The staff did NOT care. We were left on our own most of the time. The housekeeper was the only really kind person we met. The charge nurse cared more about the color of my IV's than she did about my care & immediately ordered someone to change them & make even MORE HOLES in my arms! THAT was colossally STUPID. AND the Dr discharged me with pneumonia & severe edema in my legs. He didn't even bother to check on me! Horrible experience!!! NO response from them... why am I not surprised. read more

From my original emergency surgery, I've been treated VERY POORLY. The nursing staff is incompetent, mostly made up of UND students. My surgeon, Dr. Jones, has VERY POOR bedside manner. He wouldn't/couldn't explain what he'd done during surgery, in fact I was put into the hands of the pediatric staff (I'm 27 years old). I had NO post opt conference, but instead was briefed by an OBGYN (I'm a male) and told I could leave. My advice to anyone in need of healthcare in Grand Forks: DRIVE TO FARGO. read more

Aren't healthcare systems suppose to care of you when hurt-sick? i was in a car accident due to icy roads and semi pass me up all that was pretty much wrong with is one bad left rib fracture/broken neck and a weak left hand not alot strength in it kind of tingling but doesn't hurt anyways er icu and hospital were ok although hospital have me walk in walker and the goal everyday see how many walk around i could do hello my feet legs were fine and untouched only minor bruises so why waste time with that? why not work on my upper strength? the specialty center on Washington was the same where i stayed one week all they did was push me around in wheelchair work on my legs more by doing leg excersies what a waste of time money and effort plus the nutses there never explained or show how to change my pads on brace then altru now has me on check up with Janet les where she denied the fact about the specialty center only working on lower body strenght she wants to go to therapy to get my hand strength strong again well why didnt anyone work on that before with me? plently of chances i been neck for a month if not longer no result made talking surgery yeah more torture pain and could be more time and money wasted since according to Google Although cervical disc surgery is generally safe, it does have a few risks, including: Infection. Excessive bleeding. Reaction to anesthesia. Chronic neck pain. Damage to the nerves, spinal cord, esophagus, or vocal cords. Failure to heal. hum yeah failure heal? why mess me more then iam now it all about $$$ here and no real action done to help care for your patients read more

DRIVE TO FARGO OR MINNEAPOLIS IF YOU WANT TO LIVE. If you have cancer and you go to Altru you may as well buy a gun and point it at your head. I have a relative that complained about headaches FOR YEARS. The Altru doctors told my relative that it was just "growing old". Turns out it was multiple brain tumors. Then they missed a chest tumor that was huge and was LIKELY THERE FOR YEARS. They began overly-aggressive radiation which resulted in large radiation burns on my relative's head. They insisted on more and more radiation which they charged to Medicare at $50,000 a treatment (this alone raises flags). Even though my relative was clearly suffereing from too many radiation treatments administered too closely together the doctors added chemo and knocked out my relative's immune system to the point where my relative caught pneumonia and died within days. The cancer doctors at Altru are completely incompetent. You are better off with no treatment than going to Altru for cancer treatment. Get an apartment down in the Twin Cities and get your treatments there if you want to live. read more

I had to have major surgery at Altru. I rarely get sick and had only ever had my tonsils taken out. I was terrified as even getting my blood drawn causes me to spaz out. I thought about canceling several times but I knew it had to be done or I'd stay sick. Dr. Andrea Lays did my surgery and I couldn't have picked a better surgeon. She was kind, patient with me, reassuring but also straight forward. She did a phenomenal job on my surgery inside and the incision outside. She made sure to check up on me right away and keep my family well informed while I was out. I would highly recommend Dr. Lays and Altru hospital as from the moment I walked in for surgery to the moment I checked out everyone was so great from the people at the front desk, technicians trying to draw my blood while I spazzed out, the doctors, my nurses, anesthesiologists, I don't want to miss anyone but right down to the people who brought me food. For how horrible it was to have surgery these people made all of the difference in the world and I will forever be thankful! 5++++++ read more

Altru is great to me. I've been to the ER a few times because I'm klutzy and my kids get really sick sometimes and it's been a pleasant event every time. Except for the waiting, I've averaged about a 3 hour wait in the ER but that's not too bad compared to other hospitals I've been to in other cities. The DR's are top notch and the nursing staff is very knowledgeable. I've got nothing bad to say about Altru. read more

After the Registered Nurse on Grand Forks AFB thought I was faking it, and almost dying in the process, the AF sent me downtown to Altru and they found I had pneumonia. They were on it like a pack of hounds on a ham sandwich. I went through testing and treatment and was feeling better in a matter of hours. I had just spent a week on fifth floor for a blood clot in my lung. The nurses and nurses aids were amazing. I never felt abandon or not cared for. They truly went above and beyond to make sure my stay was as comfortable as possible. They even were very nice to my daughter who had stayed with me every night. Granted I'm happy to be out and feeling 100 times better ... but if I have to every return to Altru firth floor , I hope I get all the same nurses as before.. so thank you and hope all is well. read more

The service from doctors and nurses are awesome BUT the BILLING PEOPLE will steal your money. I was a comatose patient which was caused by my underlying disease and due to that I am up to my neck with medical bills at 19 years old. Now, the doctors literally saved my life but the billing people want more than $50 a month, which I pay because I have bills that went to collections, I have a bill with the Mayo Clinic and so on. But these guys WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY WITHOUT YOUR AUTHORIZATION. They took $100 that month which meant that I couldn't feed my family, because I am not rich, I am barely making ends meet Altru. Can you guys just stop being so selfish and understand that your patients were all there for a reason. I understand if I WASNT PAYING, but I am and I do every freaking month. I have been paying in good faith and when $50 wasn't enough, that doesnt give you the right to take money. I will be disputing these charges.. You costed me $100 in bills plus an extra $100 in overdraft fees. read more

If I could give Altru a negative score I would. They charged me for services I did not receive. They have sent me to a collection agency because they wont explain charges to me because I dont trust them. I self diagnosed myself and 4000 later am still very upset with this organization. Check your bills to make sure they havent charged you for services not rendered. I have a feeling I am not the only one. read more

I had a mole removed last summer through Altru. The staff was great. They were very friendly and knowledgeable. However, afterwards, I received 3 separate bills for 3 different amounts with no explanation, even after I had paid the first 2. I had to call their headquarters in Chicago to get it straightened out, and it turned out they hadn't filed anything with my insurance. I am still waiting to receive my newest bill that is supposed to be the "correct" amount. read more

About an hour later Altru announced that they were buying the property. They are not opening the hospital and they shut down the associated surgery center. The hospital and surgery center staff all lost their jobs last Friday and Altru maintained their monopoly on health care delivery in Grand Forks. There are some good people there but they obviously work for a power hungry organization that does not have the best interests of the community at heart. Are they that insecure and fearful that they could not compete with a little upstart 65 bed hospital on the other end of town? read more
