Clissold Wines is a friendly family-run store which has an excellent selection of low-mid price wines, spirits and beers. They always run a few cheap offers in big wooden crates next to the door- I went in last night and they had 3 different 3 for 10 pound white wine offers. As well as inexpensive offerings, they also have an excellent range of riojas and sancerres from about 12 pounds upwards. The staff are friendly and helpful and have two beautiful cats who sit behind the till.

There is always a bargain to be had, which is why I keep going back. The specials are often at give-away prices. I also keep going back because I love the people who run the store. There are a few rather posh wine shops in the area, and I am grateful that Clissold is not one of them. Church street can get a it carried away with its prices sometimes, and Clissold keeps it down to earth.

I especially like being able to pop in and grab a few bottles instead of being required to purchase a min of 6 that another big chain requires. Majestic calls itself a wine warehouse and that description does dampen down your expectation of its appearance - it is housed in one of the most unusual/ugliest buildings I've seen. Despite being on the main Wimbledon Broadway, it does have some parking just in front of the shop. Once inside, you'll find huge stacks of wines from old and new wine countries. For a non drinker like me, there are helpful labels which tell you about he character of the various wines on offer. You do have to buy in bulk - 6 or 12 bottles being the minimum. I've had no complaints from friends who've received bottles I've purchased here, so I assume their selection is sound. A bit disappointed that despite me trying to buy an expensive bottle from them, they still insisted on the minimum bottles rule. That did lose them my custom on that occasion.

Majestic may not be suitable for the casual drinker or last minute party host, as prices can be quite high compared to the local supermarkets. San Miguel beer costs nearly £7 more per case at Majestic than it does at the local Morrisons, so if you're an impulse buyer, rather take a minute to think about it. Remember though: if it's pure variety and a free delivery you're after, Majestic is the place to call.

The party in the evening was a big success - both thanks to the New Zealand wine, as well as to the Anzac & Hokey Pokey Biscuits that I had baked the night before (see image of all three items). Today I called Philglas & Swiggot and inquired about Brazilian liquor - Cachaça. (Guess what - we're having a Brazilian-themed Happy Hour at the office ;-). Unfortunately, they don't carry it, but the person on the phone was very helpful nevertheless and pointed me to a shop where I would definitely find Cachaça: at Gerry's in Soho. That's what I call great service, thanks!

Luckily they carry a good selection of wines from many other parts of the world as well. The selection from South Africa was respectable but there are better places for it in London as well (check my other wine store reviews). Service was really friendly and extremely knowledgeable and helpful (great recommendations for other places to go to as well). The selection of wine dis however to some extent fail to excite me so while a respectable selection of wines I only found a few things that really got me interested. As they did not really have much to taste I did not really feel like picking up that much but ended up buying some 'house' champagne Louis Barthelemy Brut at a decent price. It is one of three outlets and I am yet to check out the others as well but this is a goos choice if close to Marble Arch and in need of wine. If you're planning a party, want to match a wine with a meal or want to pretend you are in a hyper-market in France? I'd recommend a visit to this wine warehouse. It's not sexy, it's not glamorous but it does have fabulous staff who really know what they are talking about. They won't make you feel like a wine moron or try to up sell you. It's just honest wine opinion. As many of you will have noticed, I am the Duchess here. This is not because I buy huge amounts of wine. This is because, like a kid in a sweet shop, I got a little bit excited and left my card behind after paying. When I went back the next day to collect it, I just could resist checking in again. Oooo, the scandal! You all know I'm a lush, what's the point in hiding it hey?

I can't speak for all the Jeroboams shops - I've only ever been to this one, and even then, just once - but I was rather surprised to find that not only did this branch have a fine selection of wines, they also had a great selection of spirits, including a certain Japanese whisky which led me to this shop. Despite the seemingly posh sounding name, and its location in west London, I found prices in this shop more than fair, even for the hard-to-find whisky. Tom, the person manning the shop the day I visited, certainly knows his stuff. He's not just enthusiastic about wine, but also spirits and where you can enjoy them, which is why you can find craft gins, quality tonic water and other kinds of alcohol in addition to what Jeroboams is known for - wine. He's also the guy behind their Twitter feed, which, if you're a fan of good alcohol and happen to live nearby (or even if you don't, I'd encourage you to follow so that you know what special offers and tastings are on, or, in my case, when certain vintages have arrived!
