1/2008 Update: I…read moreschedule appointments for the practitioner, Timothy Yan. After all the great work he's done for me, it's the least I can do. I'm constantly amazed at the power of Traditional Chinese Medicine as an alternative or complement to Western Medicine. 7/2007 Update: I've been sleeping badly and getting pains in my shoulder/shoulder blade area. One day it got bad enough that it felt like a pinched nerve because the pain was radiating down my arm and it was just hurt to move/turn my left side. My unhappy self went to Spring Life for an acupuncture treatment. The next day, I was a little sore but not in pain. And since then I haven't had any shoulder pain! ------------- When I think of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I think of my childhood. Going to Chinatown on the weekends to see my grandparents. One of those memories are of those times my parents took me to see a Chinese doctor. The smells of herbs as you walked in to the store. The doctor was inevitable in a backroom, the size of a closet. Enough space for a chair and a table, usually with an older gentleman that doesn't talk to get to know you, just asks you to sit down and they feel your pulses. Then he writes something in Chinese and you give it to the guys up front. My have things have changed since then! Walking in to Spring Life is like walking in to a day spa type environment. With a running water feature, calm green walls, gauzy curtains to let in the light. Music plays in the background. The practitioner? Timothy Yan is not what I pictured a Chinese doctor to be. I was asked the usual questions about my symptoms, lifestyle and *ahem* bodily functions. But I didn't feel judged like I have in the past with other practitioners. I also appreciate the fact that Timothy takes the time to ask questions and takes time to answer my questions. He addresses my concerns, analyzes where my barriers are to help me overcome them so that I can feel better.

You'll be sore the next day but your body has to heal. But he was super kind, made sure I was okay the entire duration of the massage. As we were done, greeted me with some water before I left. Will definitely come back! For those who have been to massage centers, cash is better but pricing was still reasonable for card.

A sign (not a human) said remove all clothes but underwear and get under the sheet, face down. So I did that. Then a man walked in and indicated that I should take off my bra, and sort of helped me, not in an unprofessional way, take it off. I was covered and face down on the table, he just unclipped the back and pulled it out from under me. Then he left. A couple of minutes later my massage therapist came in. I wasn't sure if it was the same person or not since my face was in the cradle of the table. I asked for a female therapist, but really didn't care. But I couldn't tell right away because she just started working on my body thru the sheet. Great! But no introduction, how much pressure do you like? What hurts? She just started! I came because my back and shoulders HURT and I wanted someone with a solid and strong touch. She had that! She used a fast and firm motion. I mean, it was a bit jolting. But honestly, I needed the deep massage, so despite the roughness and lack of familiarity, the job was getting done. She finally spoke and asked if the pressure was ok. I said yes, and was happy to finally know she was a woman. Next she pulled the sheet back and squirted lotion or oil on my back - no warning. She tossed the bottle on the sheet by my legs. No big deal, just not relaxing like I'm used to at more spendy places. A bit later she left for a few minutes and brought out the hot rocks! I love those and didn't know it was part of my package. Again she moved them very quickly, which isn't very relaxing, but it was fine. Again, I was there to eliminate pain, not a full relaxation massage. Since this is getting long, overall, while not what I'm used too as far as a refined massage experience, it got the job done and for an hour massage with hot stones for under $100 with tip, that's a good deal. I'd come back for emergency pain relief!

I loved the mix of conversation/support, meditation and yoga. If you're looking for a more vigorous practice, this might not be your cup of tea, but for me it was perfect. As someone who was fairly new to the area at the time and in need of a community of new mothers, I really appreciated Jessica's connections. If you need anything -- massage, acupuncture, a midwife, etc. -- she knows someone or several someones. She is also a great listener, a kind voice of support and extremely knowledgeable about pregnancy, birth and parenting. A lovely person to know!

Because of the community she's created and all of her knowledge, her classes led me to find an incredible doula, the best postpartum care, the couple we're going to do a nanny-share with, and so much more.
