The space was bigger than I expected yet small enough to still feel quaint. The guy working seemed nice enough but not overly friendly. They had a good amount of books but I was expecting a lower price for being used. They actually had the book I wanted for virtually the same price I could get anywhere else, as I'm writing this review I checked online and it's significantly cheaper now than it has been. On Saturdays they open an hour after sundown and offer free drinks. Man at the front was very friendly. The shelf with all old books was cool. They have a box of children's plushies for sale in the back with the kids' books. That kids' section had a good selection. Would go if you're looking for older history books, selected works, or used kids' books! read more

I've been to the store in Shadyside before and always had good customer service but today not so much. Firstly when you enter the store no one greets you or asks if they can help you. I found a book to buy and went to check out and asked if they had a copy of Gone with the wind, the male cashier simple stated, " if it's not on the shelf we don't have it ". He made no effort to help me with my request, I won't be going back there again plus the book I naught was $3 more that if I had purchased on Amazon. This gem resides in the heart of the Cultural District and it boasts a great selection or rare classics (books) & records (vinyl). They have volumes of new and used books. The store has a vintage feel to it, the staff are cheerful & eager to help you find what your looking for. The space is small but offers just about everything you might need. They even have gift cards for purchase too. I just so happen to love independent bookstores & I'm grateful this one is nearby my home. Was out exploring the city solo one morning and found this darling little used book shop! There were lots of books to look at and even some first editions for sale! They also have a lot of used records as well! Fun little spot to kill some time in. Masks are not required - employees do not wear masks - social distancing is not enforced. read more

I managed to find this cool place during my first time in Pittsburgh, just walking down the street on the hunt for some place to eat lunch after a long trip from Buffalo. When we arrived there was a little note on the door, that the owner would be back at 5:30, but it looked so cool inside that I decided to wait around for him to come back. I mean, I can't say no to cute, local shops. The old-looking books were what made me turn around and go back to check the shop out, though of course I'm such a big vinyl gal that I had to spend most of my time checking out what was in stock. The selection here is about as random as it gets, but that's the fun in sifting through vinyl, and even books once in a while. Sometimes you just need to find something that happens to catch your eye, try it out for yourself! I glued myself to the boxes of vinyl hoping to find something I could bring home from the city, since I try to collect at least one album from every far city I visit. I actually found a little John Denver to bring home, but there was also a good assortment of classical music, 60's and 70's. The owner was super nice, too. He offered to put on whatever album I wanted while I browsed (I just trusted his judgement and let him play a little classical, haha). Super cool. I'll definitely visit again during my next trip to Pittsburgh. read more

I come in here and I never leave empty-handed. More times than not however I have to put things back and decide what to really purchase that day; otherwise I'd go broke because of all the wonderful choices. It's also very refreshing to be in a book shop where the employees are passionate about literature. To me this is one of those little treat places I'd love to find while visiting another city. Glad I don't have to go very far for that. read more

Eric was very helpful for my first quick visit I made to the store. Easy to work with and helpful. I will be going back to see them again. I found two books I 'needed' for my collection in a matter of minutes. A veritable plethora of books and interesting items. Looks like there are significant records available as well. I personally don't use the records, but if you needed to build that portion of a collection there was no shortage of choices. High five for ease of doing business and nice place and location. read more

A really friendly and knowledgeable staff. A good inventory of fascinating books (I think everyone could find at least one book they want to leave the store with). There could be a few more helpful signs for help in locating the various sections of the store, but it is also fun to just browse. How anyone can praise this bookstore is beyond me. I was in there recently and I found three books with their covers torn off for sale at prices close to what they are new. As everyone should know by now, a book with its cover torn off is one that had its cover returned to the distributor/publisher so that the store wouldn't have to pay for it. The book is then expected to be thrown away. I don't mind the selling of these books so much as long as the price is under a dollar but selling them at high prices is ridiculous. And that story exemplifies this store. It's a block away from Jerry's Records where prices have been reasonable for decades but Amazing sells records at consistently high prices. In general, the owner doesn't seem to know books very well & overprices everything. He occasionally has good stock but why buy it there? You can get it cheaper somewhere else. read more

I was pretty excited to come here to search for some books, but I was horrified. The store is cluttered, books are scattered all over the floor and are completely unorganized! I was looking through several titles, and the selection they have is too limited. The guy working (I assume he's the owner) barely welcomed me to the store as he was too busy talking to another customer. I don't think I'll be coming back. read more

I happened upon this store today and I'm glad I did. Found a unique and interesting art book (which is what I always look for), and the owner is friendly and helpful. May we always have cool bookstores around! (A side note: I signed up for an email receipt, and the company who processes these asked for feedback on the store by clicking on a smiley or frowny face. I went in to check the records and was very disappointed. Most are in poor condition and there's a lot of them on the floor. Plus everything is incredibly over priced. I saw a beat run of the mill copy of the Stones Sticky Fingers album for $50. Who in their right mind would pay that much when the exact same thing goes for less than $10 at Jerry's or The Attic? Amazing Books? Maybe. Amazingly Overpriced Records? For sure. read more

This place is really great it's a clam environment and the records vary from a lot of different types of music.

A classic used-book treasure trove, with a great mixed bag of bottom-dollar deals, books-that-just-want-to-be-loved, and true gems waiting to be picked up. When I travel, I like to find a small locally-owned bookshop to browse, where hopefully I'll come across an item or two of local interest to take home with me. On my recent visit to Pittsburgh, Amazing Books admirably filled the bill. Came out with two mint editions of great books on the city's architectural and labor history, exactly what I was looking for. The shop's conveniently located between the cultural district and the convention center, so it's a great place to drop in for a few minutes before a show or on your way to or from a meal in at one the local eateries. Eric-the-owner is amiable and knowledgeable and his willingness to go the extra mile to find what you're looking for indicates not just a dedication to the business, but the true hallmarks of a fellow book-fiend. read more

Years ago I wrote a local article on the need for independent bookstores in the 'Burgh to balance the chains. Ironically B&N disappeared from downtown, along with Borders, with independents thriving in the region. Mystery Lovers carries the torch in Oakmont, with Caliban in Oakland. Now Amazing has appeared downtown on the scene for people of the book (the paper and print kind, not the Kindle) on Liberty. Great place to stop in and browse while waiting for a sandwich at Mike and Tony's or seeing what's happening in the Cultural District. Eric and Alana will chat with you about what you're looking for or order it for you. The store has an eclectic collection that lends itself to literary serendipity and connection, and that's no small thing. Check them out. read more
