The Ambassador Bridge connects Detroit, Michigan to Windsor Ontario, Canada. It's the second time that I have been on this bridge and you get a great view of the skyline. It's a nice and smooth ride while you're on the bridge. They check passports entering Canada and coming back into the US. It's a $9 toll each way for using the bridge. Upon leaving Canada they have a duty free store at the border. I didn't find things that were that cheap. I did pick up a candy bar. Last time, I got myself a perfume. read more

I've never done the Ambassador Bridge before but have always wanted to since I moved back to Detroit. It's a long standing part of the Detroit skyline and I finally got to cross it yesterday. The ride was smooth but let me tell you, they have barricades up and it can be slightly confusing as to where to go. I almost followed two trucks to the truck zone! The customs agents are fine and they have a border shop on the Canadian side for purchases of alcohol, purses, jewelry and other items. I think it's all tax free! I love the skyline view when crossing the bridge because you can see the rencen and the updated train station that was reopened over the summer. You can pay cash when entering the US, which is weird because going through the tunnel on the way to the border you could only pay by card. I also enjoyed the large Canadian and American flags huge from above to show which country you're in. read more

This is the first bridge I'm crossing between countries (the FDR Bridge https://www.yelp.com/biz/franklin-delano-roosevelt-bridge-lubec?hrid=Zk7X9PQvW8fwiXjqMBXJHg between Lubec and Campobello Island was closed last year for the pandemic) and it's a stunner. The busiest international border in North America, it is actually privately owned. It opened to traffic in 1939 and carries I-75 / I-96 in the United States and Highway 3 in Canada. The bridge has two lanes in each direction and is 152 feet above the Detroit River. It carries 10,000 trucks a day and 4,000 cars a day, which amounts to some 25% of trade between the two countries. We crossed this evening and it took nearly 35 minutes to clear immigration at the Canadian side. The road curves to meet the immigration booths making it difficult to judge which queue is the fastest and which actually has two booths at the end. The Ambassador Bridge connects the USA and Canada in the Detroit/Windsor area. Honestly, after driving 3 hours, and going about 80 mph, I didn't see or remember much of the bridge. It is a toll bridge. No pay, no go. The view from the top of the bridge was nice as it had a great river view. I don't know if it was the effects of COVID, but, this border crossing is how I like my border crossings. It was fast! I went through this border crossing in less than 20 minutes, and that was after being interrogated by both the USA and Canada. It's a lot fast than the Vancouver and even the crossing to go to Calgary. The old bridge didn't fail. It held up my car. I wish all border crossings to Canada would be as fast as this one. read more

I have been on the bridge a couple times and I absolutely love the views that come with the bridge. What an eyesore. It looks like they've done nothing to this Bridge in the last 50 years to upgrade and modernize it. There was finally some construction on it when we drove across in September 2019 so it looks like they are starting to do something. There's a Nexus lane to use of you are a cardholder like me, but every time I cross these officers drill all of us with questions. It's the only border crossing we get questioned what food we have in the car; very strange. Toll is $5 USD after the drilling, and then you can take I75 north or south after it. read more

We drive to Toronto annually or as much as possible so we have a little Tim Horton's coffee in our blood eh! So you leave the house early because you want to cross the bridge around noon for lunch or shortly after having lunch, in let's say, Ann Arbor. You drive anxiously to get out of Chicagoland and into Indiana and finally into Michigan. Michigan (BEWARE) is one big speed trap, they pull cars over 3 at a time. I say all that to finally say this - Once you clear these hurdles, the beautiful Ambassador bridge awaits you. You could also take the tunnel (boring and unusual for me) into Canada or you could drive to Port Huron to cross into Sarnia (not as memorable and a little farther). However, the bridge is monumental and will certainly give you a sense of accomplishment as you drive into Canada! The bridge and the sites all around it are beautiful and the Canadians are very welcoming because bottom line, they know you're there to spend USDs so everyone is happy. As a suggestion, get global entry, it'll cut down on the unnecessary questions when you're coming back into the US. Such as - Where are you going? Me - "I've got to get home, I have to work tomorrow :( ." I know they have a job to do but let's speed this up a little. Back to the bridge, it's privately owned and 25 percent of Canada's GDP flows through it - which I think is a little crazy. What if something happened to it, what is Canada's plan B? And the person that owns it, that's a sweeter deal than the guy who provides hamburger buns to McDonalds. In any case, not my problem but food for thought. After crossing the bridge from Detroit (which is on an upswing - think Shinola), you will find your self in the town of Windsor, which has an outlet mall and some pretty good restaurants (including Vietnamese). Crossing the bridge is the midpoint of my trip and it also means 3.5 hours on the 401 to the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). That's my review eh!!! Maybe I should cross the border by foot next time and try to get my third citizenship. :) read more

The gloss black suspension bridge opened November 15, 1929 and comes in at 7500' from the tips with 152' of clearance to the Detroit River below. The Ambassador Bridge on the American side comes into a plaza where documents are checked.  After exiting from this area the roadway continues on to the snarl of choices that are available - there is Highway 96 and Highway 75 or Fort Street.  Be sure to plan your route after exiting the Bridge whether you are going into Detroit City proper or away from it. The Ambassador Bridge is an old bridge.  It's not like it's swaying in the breeze - it's just got that 'I'm an old bridge' look.  Now, in general, old bridges aren't necessarily bad.  Covered bridges - they are mostly old bridges and they are not bad unless your car breaks down in the middle of one.  Old railroad bridges, I find, as a rule, to be pretty cool looking.  I like them.  This bridge, if you can imagine it, looks like it didn't eat enough.  The lanes are tight and constricted.  It is run for-profit so along with the delays introduced by the formalities associated with crossing and international boundary you will need to deal with paying for transit across the bridge. There are a lot of trucks that use this bridge.  If you are going for entertainment or to visit family across the border I recommend the tunnel - if you want the scenery and don't mind delay and that tiny feeling of danger that may accompany driving sandwiched between three tractor trailers then go with the bridge. The exit into Canada after the entry plaza goes right into a Provincial highway and there is easy on and easy off. read more

The bridge is beautiful to look at from a distance and is obviously a very famous one given it serves as Canada's arguably most important border crossing. I think I remember reading somewhere that most of the trade between Canada and the US occurs via this bridge. The views while crossing are beautiful too, you get good views of the Detroit River, Windsor, and the Detroit Skyline. The officers on both sides of the border, based off my experiences, have been courteous and professional. I have always gotten the sense that they know what they are doing. My only issue is that when crossing the bridge, there is only one lane both ways (see the one picture I took of crossing the bridge behind a truck). This resulted in significant delays that set me back by an hour, which could have been easily preventable. At the same time, there was construction/road work going on, so I have no idea if there usually is two lanes open both ways or not. Do note that you also have to pay a toll to cross the bridge. If crossing from Canada to the US, you will pay this after crossing into the US, if crossing into Canada, you will pay the toll before crossing the bridge. This is certainly my go to border crossing because although there can be significant delays here depending on the time of day, it is always worth it because the agents have always treated me courteously and professionally. read more

The worst unprofessional unskilled racist bias place ever in my life I have ever seen I am a 60 year old American book passport my girlfriend 56 year old Canadian book passport. We was treated like undocumented immigrants for 4 hours. Because the officer got upset because I asked if I could use the restroom and she said no I said wow really. She said what would I do if I was on the road. Stupid arrogant unprofessional and they made my girlfriend undress down to her panties and brawl after they found nothing in the vehicle took her picture and fingerprints the girl that did it said she didn't want to but I the other girl forced her to. Went through our phones also because I made upset the little immature girl. This isn't by far I will sell both my house and everything I have to get this dealt with. I am a retired Union Boilermaker local 85 and Owens Community College welding instructor with many health issues now and she was aware of it. Like sitting in a plastic for 4 hours with 5 fused disc and a titanium cage going 3/4 of way up. 6 stents in my prostate and she refused me use the restroom. I call them 2 days later to complain they said they didn't need a reason to refuse my girlfriend entry bias racism. They have my passport number now because I complained 2x let us see if I get harassed for now on. I believe the attorney can get all of footage. read more

This must be the most expensive way to do a land crossing between Canada and the U.S. I can't think of another land crossing anywhere in the Great Lakes region that costs as much as the Ambassador Bridge! What a mess it is to get to the bridge, from either side. I travel commercially across the border and it always takes too much time to get from one side to the other at this bridge. Usually, there is a lane closed on the bridge, sometimes two. Since the bridge is only 4 skinny lanes wide, lane closures always decrease the amount of traffic that can cross at any given time. Of course, with slower traffic comes traffic back-ups. I don't shop at the duty-free store, nor do I help line the pockets of the bridge company by buying fuel from them. Since they don't pay road tax on the fuel, anyone who buys gas or diesel there is just cheating Ontario or Michigan out of badly needed money for road repair. Add the fuel tax from either side to the cost at the bridge pumps and you'll see that you're being ripped off. Speaking of road repair, why can't they get their act together with this bridge? It's always being repaired! For my money, I prefer to travel to the Blue Water Bridge and cross the border much more efficiently. The Blue Water Bridge is much cheaper, cleaner and much more efficient than the Ambassador Bridge will ever be. And for you folks who travel by car, just take the tunnel. read more

Didn't realize this bridge had history until reading the yelp reviews. $4 to cross it if you pay in US currency; otherwise $4.75 Canadian. Given that the exchange rate is even that is weird. I had been to the duty free shop before and thought the prices were high; now I see why. Every day I am in Windsor the trucks are lined up waiting for the bridge and Customs. Knowing what I know now, the next time I have to cross into Michigan, I'm either taking the tunnel or taking the Sarnia - Port Huron route, depending on my destination. If you want to know why, please read some of the excellent reviews below, especially those by Heather J or Kevin J and do your own research. Long story short, the dude who owns the bridge is quite the piece of work and the way he runs it is nothing short of despicable and this is coming from someone who is a proud and avowed capitalist. There are a lot of examples of the private sector stepping in to do something better and more efficiently than the government but this sure as hell isn't one of them. Yes the bridge is pretty nice looking and the views are pretty cool but it ain't worth it. Despite its inherent beauty, it does look like it's falling apart and feels that way, too. Also it has to be the most expensive border crossing that I can recall...if there's one that's more, I'd love to hear it. Plus it's a bit of a nightmare getting on and off the thing (GPS didn't help) so that's another strike. So yeah, avoid if you can. It seems like the right thing to do and I know I will...I'll give it two stars because of the aesthetic but that sure doesn't mean I'm going to use this crossing in the future if I can help it. read more

coming back into Canada on the morning of new years eve was a nice treat, virtually no line up and the staff on the Canadian side was very very polite. just be honest when you are crossing and you generally will have zero issues. please make sure that your passport is signed as well, that can cause a bit of a headache or embarrassment depending on how you react. a few helpful hints for efficiency. play no music have everyone awake and alert spoke loud and clearly passport signed make sure your answers are to the point but making sure to answer the question have some extra I.D. on your person (just in case) the bridge is an awesome one to cross with an absolutely Majestic view from either end. read more

The Ambassador Bridge has its own address? Huh? I'm going to start sending it letters! The bridge, which I can see from my house, is a wonderful piece of architecture. You can check out Wikipedia for all the statistical and historical information, none of which i possess, but as far as pleasant sky-line-enhancing aesthetic enjoyment, I love that it's there. Especially at nights when its contours are lit up with lamp-lights, which are particularly brilliant in winter as the leafless trees give one a clear line of sight to the festive aura of the crossing. Makes great foto-kitsch in the background of any shot, which can be done at almost any point along the river. Give it a twice-over next time you're driving by, or strolling around the river walk. read more

I've always been a tunnel guy. But this is a beautiful piece of architecture. Yes, Matty Maroun is a monopolist who might be sabotaging international commerce and who is duping the electorate, but that does not take away from the majesty of this blue behemoth (And, he is also a hell of a philanthropist, incidentally). It costs a few more quarters to get across here than the tunnel, but it is super convenient for reaching "South Windsor" and the University if you want to avoid going downtown. A few logistical matters...You will likely have to bypass the entrance off 75 (closed), and take the detour at the Clark St. exit. When you head back to Detroit, you will end up paying the toll AFTER going through customs (different from how it is on the way to Windsor, and also different from how it works in the tunnel). Also, watch out for night-time construction - it can get kind of tight with the workers and truckers, etc. If only there were a dedicated walking/biking bridge to Windsor...alas. read more

Drove to Windsor from Detroit via the Tunnel and returned the same day via the Bridge. The Tunnel is 25 cents cheaper. The Tunnel was backed up almost as soon as we entered it. It moved very slowly. And a car broke down; cars were passing it on the wrong side of the road which was very dangerous. A truck came the opposite direction, did a 180 in the small space and pushed it out. All the lanes were open at the Canadian border. It took a while, but things moved. The Tunnel is downtown Detroit and puts you out into Windsor very close to the Casino. On the way back, however, was not as pleasant. There view from the Bridge was gorgeous. There was no line whatsoever and we drove very quickly on the bridge--too fast. We could not take the photos we wanted because there was no traffic at all. The bridge was run down and I can see how it looks scary and you wonder if it is safe. But then off the bridge came the wait; a huge wait. Not all the lanes are open and people turn off their engines and get out and wait (just like they do in Europe). The Bridge is south of Detroit and out of the city and puts you out of the city in Windsor. I do recommend trying both to get a feel or to say you have done both of them, but we will return using the tunnel. read more

I have a long standing love-hate relationship with this landmark. As a Canadian who commuted to work for years, I have endured long waits, and friendly customs inspections on my way to work. The border is not a clean walk in the park, depending on your legal status, you are treated one way or another. I got to experience it as a visitor, TN visa holder, temporary green card holder, and finally getting my full green card. Each entry was different, and only got clean and easy with a green card. This bridge is old, and it just has some new paint and asphalt slapped onto it. I am eagerly waiting for the new bridge to break ground and open up for business so I can say good bye to this place and it's high crossing rates. The bridge toll has always been the highest I've seen around, compared to the Windsor/Detroit Tunnel or even the Chatham bridge up north. This border crossing is one of those things that you need to do if you want to get into the US or Canada. You're not going to love it, it is just a bump in the road to where you're going. I've taken this bridge twice now after evenings spend in Windsor, while being based in Detroit. Both times, at about 10:30 PM, it's been inexplicably slow. Vehicles move through customs much more slowly than when I take the tunnel to Canada, and only four lanes are open despite there being approximately 14 lanes overall. The combination results in situations like tonight where it took about 1 minutes to get through Canadian customs from the tunnel, and about 1 hour to get through U.S. customs on the bridge. I understand that the tunnel is currently closed at night, which may add to bridge traffic later on, but if the bridge had most of the lanes open, at least I'd feel like they were trying. As it is, it suggests instead that they measure their success by how long of a line they have, and are taking advantage of the tunnel being closed to bump up that metric. Maybe it's partially U.S. Customs being a lot worse than Canadian - the first time I went through, the officer was a jerk. You would've thought I was a Mexican illegally crossing the southern border in February 2017, rather than a U.S. citizen with a valid passport. But even if that's most of the problem, the bridge's owners could make the wait shorter by hiring a few more people, and they're well-documented to be making plenty of money. read more

Falling apart, poorly run -that's an understatement. Trucks go into car lanes blocking car flow and forcing cars into to be backed up even though car crossing lanes are moving steadily and bridge staff do nothing. There is no moderating that nexus traffic is going into nexus lanes. Basically this is a crapshow-the bridge doesn't need any additional officers or lanes, they can't effectively utilize the ones they have. Prime example why there needs to be completion or no private ownership of internationsl crossings. read more

Do NOT make a mistake and get in the truck lane on the Detroit side. They will put you in a long line of trucks and you will have to wait there forever to be x-rayed!! Traffic flowed quite well when I was there too. My wait into Canada was about 10 minutes at 4pm, and on my way into the U.S. at 9pm there was no wait at all. Canadians/Windsorites have a love/hate relationship with the Ambassador Bridge. Clearly the predominant thing in the city, it towers over the west end and is either a beautiful homage to structural engineering or an unsightly monster looming on the horizon. Always busy, they've done their best to make it as easy as possible to cross an international border. Although it is a major truck crossing, if you're lucky enough...you'll get a great view of both Windsor and Detroit while traversing its span. The area under the bridge (at least on the Canadian side) has been reduced to what resembles an intercity fiasco. The owner of the bridge purchased numerous homes with the intent to bulldoze them and make room for a sister bridge, however the government has nixed this idea (and is constructing a new, larger bridge somewhere near LaSalle). Unfortunately, the majority of the homes are now boarded up and the area has become known for drugs, squatters, crime and is very unsafe and unsightly. On my visit at Christmas, a friend wanted to drive by to see the home she grew up in...it was boarded up and the roof was missing due to a fire. Homes where she played with childhood friends were also boarded up and children's laughter replaced with the hum of traffic from above. An absolute disgrace to a once lively community. At night, the bridge is stunning, with lights creating a ribbon of gold across the Detroit River. read more
