This marker stands in front of one of the oldest homes in Fernandina Beach. It's hard to miss as…read moreit's right in downtown among the restaurants and tourist destinations. Definitely worth your time to stop by and check it out. The marker reads, "This Classical Revival style residence, built by Dr. John F. Lesesne circa 1860, is one of the oldest homes in Fernandina Beach. Lesesene left Fernandina during the Civil War and did not return. In 1868 the house became the property of the family of Judge John Friend, who had been appointed district tax commissioner after the war by President Andrew Johnson. Friend was a lawyer and served as a county commissioner and judge. At the time of his death in 1878 he was state senator-elect from Nassau County. The descendants of the Friend family still occupy the home. This double galleried home, constructed of hand-hewn lumber fastened with wooden pegs, is one of the major points of interest in the Fernandina Beach Historic District which was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1973." The marker was erected in 1997. There is street parking nearby and a free city lot nearby. If it's high season, it might be a problem finding parking. The one worker that is stationed at the house, was friendly and very knowledgeable. I just wish that there were more furnishings in the home, but there is a plaque that actually addresses this. Be sure to bring your phone with you so that you can follow the audio tour (again, free!), and you might even get a chance to see some bald eagles in the front of the house. You will definitely need your camera! TIP - there isn't a ton of parking, so be sure to go earlier in the day.

There is a private parking lot and picnic tables BUT BE WARNED we experienced a ton of mosquitos! So BUGGIE SPRAY the Heck out of your exposed body parts! I got ate up and so did Tony! It's much larger than it looks from the parking lot! There's a Historical marker available to read about the previous owner dates and Plantation name! Definitely recommend & hope you enjoy!

Unfortunately, this was Spanish territory and they were massacred. Another example of the North American continent being a safe haven from religious persecution, and later becoming a place for execution. Mysteries float around this settlement though, such as the appearance of African people, according to the chronicler's input. Besides the mystery, this is a beautiful place to walk. And if this place is not enough, there is a 45 minute trail right across the street. The museum holds some artifacts and tells a story worthy of your time.

The marker nearby reads, "The 1891 Nassau County Courthouse is one of only a few remaining courthouses in Florida built in the late 19th century. An excellent example of the Italianate style, it features a square domed tower with cupola, brick corbelling, bracketed cornice, brick pilasters, arched windows, granite sills, and arcaded entrances with cast iron columns. Its architect, A.E. McClure, was from Jacksonville, but designed notable buildings throughout Florida, including the Lake City Agricultural College, forerunner of the University of Florida. The building's cornerstone was inscribed with the date 1891 and was scheduled to be laid on December 16 of that year, but the ceremony was delayed until April 12, 1892. Renovations to the courthouse include the 1926 addition of a vault for the recording office and a bell that was cast by Meneely & Co. of West Troy, New York. The bell served as part of the city's fire alarm until the mid-1930s. The clock was added to the bell tower in 1977. The courthouse is the tallest building in the Fernandina Beach Historic District and has served the county's judicial and governmental needs since its construction." Whether it's an early morning sunrise, midday afternoon, or evening sunset the view is stunning. At night often the airport will be lit up for incoming flights which is also very pretty. If it's a foggy evening it's just as amazing. You just can't lose for an amazing view. If you are especially lucky you will see kyackers or canoes throughthe cove. The only complaint would be that the experience crossing over is too short!

Awesome visit! OK,…read moreso we all know the NWS (National Weather Service) exists and they monitor weather. But how much more do you know? For starters, everything starts with them...period! I am referring to the 122 offices nationwide in six regions. Each office has a geographic area of responsibility for not only monitoring the local weather, climate and atmosphere within its AOR (area of responsibility) but also the marine, aviation, fire and hydrology forecasts. To sum it up...their information let's all of us know how to respond, plan, prepare, etc. for natural and human-caused events. They are the lovely people that interrupt your electronics to issue advisories, warnings, statements, watches, forecast emergency situations, etc. They monitor, collect and distribute information 24/7/365 to help keep us...the public...safe. They also monitor river and rainfall data, and launch balloons daily to gather upper-air weather data no matter what it may look like outside or the condition. Why? Because change happens all the time and we need to be prepared. On our visit it was a quiet day at the NWS, which is a good thing. I'm sure when a hurricane is coming it's probably so crazy it's like Chicken Little and the sky is falling! Quiet = good thing! I'm sure it's more intense at certain times, like when they are monitoring a wild fire for example since it's human made and unpredictable. During emergencies situations...these people practically live there and hunker down. Yes, they sleep there and do what has to be done. Why? Because we need them to. We all appreciate the forecast, but in certain situations they truly are unsung heroes and this is something we really don't think about or consider. What would we do without them? So I asked the crazy question as to why the local news guys on different channels or even the weather websites can reflect a different forecast. As stated earlier, it "starts" here and it does. They put the information out there and then however the news channel weather guy/gal interprets it, etc. is up to them and up to their interpretation if they want to add/change/adjust. The NWS is not responsible for the additional interpretation(s). Often the local channels or the websites other than NWS are close, but sometimes they can be wacky...right? At the end of the day, it all starts with the NWS and anyone can access this information in addition to their favorite channel, website, app, etc. The NWS tries to be the best and put out the best data they can. So, if you have doubt with whatever channel you are watching, the app you are using or the website you are viewing...go to the NWS for your fact checking. A few gee whiz things: 1. Do you know what NOAA stands for? It is National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 2. The NOAA was originally formed in February 10, 1807. It was reorganized on October 3, 1970. 3. There are over 11,000 civilian employees and operations are supported by additional uniformed service members. 4. They monitor weather data collected from international weather stations in addition to theirs to help give you the best data, product and facts. 5. Living in Florida, hurricanes can be somewhat of a problem. Most of the time, they are more of a…read morenuisance than anything. We always ride them out, but having to go without power for a day or two is a big 'ole pain in the tush! These are the people I trust to keep me informed on where the hurricanes are, where they are heading, and how strong they are. It's nice I can depend on them so I'll know if a category 4 or 5 is heading my way and I need to get the hell outta here quick, fast, and in a hurry! So cheers to ya... keep up the great work!
