The Quayle Vice Presidential Learning Center in Huntington, Indiana is a museum I have wanted to…read moresee for a long time. This summer I finally had a chance to make a visit there, and it was truly worth the journey. This is the place to go if you want to learn about each of the 50 Vice President - or "veep," as the grandson of Alben Barkley, Harry Truman's vice president, started to call him. Barkley is also the only U.S. vice president to marry while in office as well as the oldest person elected to the vice presidency. Indiana claims as many as six vice presidents, of whom Dan Quayle and Mike Pence are still alive. Two vice presidents, Charles Fairbanks (from Indiana) and George Dallas have had cities named after them. Museum has its own parking lot right next to the building. When the schools are in session, the museum is often packed with students and children, so summer months are really the best times to make your visit. The reason I didn't give five stars is that the museum doesn't have a gift shop, which I always love to visit at museums to buy souvenirs.

My first experience with the Dan Quayle Center and Museum came during a Tenderness Tour event that…read moreincluded a stop in Huntington, Indiana, the former Vice-President's hometown and the host for the Dan Quayle Center and Museum. It is, of course, also the home of Huntington University. I have to be honest and say that I really enjoyed that visit and it gave me super fond memories of the museum. The director that I met was really friendly and let me see as much as I could from my wheelchair. Quayle was Vice-President from 1989-1993 under President George H.W. Bush. He tried to snag the Republican nomination in 2000, though that effort fell short fairly quickly. I'd never really thought about vice-presidents also having any type of museum, though this museum located in an old Christian Science church is actually quite a nice sized museum. Tremendous attention is actually given to all the vice-presidents with each one having on display memorabilia, letters, and more. While Quayle himself has donated much to the museum, other items have been acquired in auctions or on Ebay. Did you know that Indiana has actually been the home of six vice-presidents and three other VP candidates? The upstairs area is primarily dedicated to Quayle himself. There are items from childhood and the infamous dog-chewed law degree. Marilyn Quayle's inaugural gown is here and so is the Bible Quayle was sworn into office on. There is, of course, a gift shop that is actually pretty cool. Over the years, the museum has sort of transitioned from simply a museum to an actual "learning center." In 2008, its name was officially changed to The Quayle Vice Presidential Learning Center. Quayle himself no longer lives in Huntington. So, if you're hoping to catch Quayle popping in you're probably out of luck. However, when he wrote a book they had copies and I was touched that an autographed copy was actually donated to the Tenderness Tour. It continued my fondness for this place. The Quayle Center is open limited hours. So, if you're planning on a road trip I'd be sure to check the hours. This is especially true with the pandemic. Admission is only $3 for adults and $1 for ages 7-17. They also have group rates. Huntington is actually a rather neat little city and worth a day trip. I found students from nearby Huntington University to be incredibly friendly and there are some terrific dining options in town including Nick's Kitchen (famous for their tenderloin). If you have a young one into politics or presidential history, this is definitely worth the road trip.

I was back here a couple weeks ago for a Halloween-themed wedding, and lots of memories came rushing back the moment I stepped inside. We saw a beautiful old building and walked closer to get a good look at it. It turned out to be the History Center, and we decided to check it out. It turned out to be a very interesting local/county history museum. You'll learn about immigration to the area, the most important industries, famous people born in Ft. Wayne, and more! The building previously served as city hall, and the basement is the old jail. A highlight of this museum is certainly walking the jail area to see the conditions those accused of crimes were kept in decades ago. This was a very interesting museum, and it was a wonderful introduction to the area for my family. We were lucky to happen upon it.

We drove to Fort Wayne hoping to watch good theatre. The Civic Theatre is part of a larger complex called Arts United center which has a philharmonic, art exhibits and other cultural venues. The staff is friendly and helpful. The lines in will call are practically non-existent. The lines in the ticket booth are not much larger. There are certainly some negatives 1) No valet parking. Parking is also a rather long walk from theatre. I am used to theaters with either valet parking or at worst a nearby parking lot. May not be a problem for me, but my mother is older and she does have problems walking long distances. Several other patrons were also in the same situation. The nearest parking garage is several blocks away. 2) the seats are narrow and a bit uncomfortable. The narrowness didn't bother me, but my brother is larger and it was a tight fit for him. Not a lot of cushion on the seat though 3) The decor is a bit spartan compared to other theaters I have been to. 4) No alcohol sold either before the play or during intermission. They do sell sodas/pop and small snacks. I still believe though that even with these negatives, it is worth coming. The play was entertaining and well acted. My mother loved her birthday gift. Whats better than that?

The good was the History Center was free because they serve as a bathroom during the farmers market. The bad part was that EVERYONE came in the museum to use the bathroom. Once you get past all of the screaming children, there is a lot to enjoy in the museum. There is a ton of local history and a great exhibit on the beginnings of Fort Wayne. My favorite part was the jail that is in the basement. It looks the same way it was when it was operational a hundred years ago. You can even step in the jail and take your picture. As I said, it's pretty cozy and you can see it all in around 2 hrs. It has some interactive games for small children. Nothing fancy. Enjoy!
