This was a nice little stop in a cute downtown area. We stopped in while "on the road" and enjoyed it. We were fortunate enough that magic show occurred soon after we stopped in. It was pretty entertaining and renewed my interest in magic. Worth about 30 minutes of time, if you're nearby. read more

My experience at the American Museum of Magic was magical! I'm a fan of museums and magic so I knew I would have a nice experience, but this museum is something everyone can enjoy. Their collection of magic antiques and collectibles are unique and beautifully placed throughout their historic building. A big shoutout to tell the curator(s) who you can tell spent a great deal of time setting up the space. I was greeted by the Director, Sarah and she was so awesome! She gave me a great introduction of the museum, talked history with me and helped me get some cool posters they were selling. Even with Covid-19 going on, I felt safe inside because Sarah was wearing a mask and the space was clean. They would love some visitors during this time so give them a visit!! Why didn't anyone else review this yet? Everyone should go here. This is the largest magic museum in the country (or something like that...). You get a tour and get to look at all kinds of old magic posters and magic tricks and boxes that they saw ladies in half in. There's an antique store down the street and a nice coffee/tea house too. So make a day of it and go to the American Museum of Magic. read more

Perhaps on another day (we went on the 5th of July, a day after the holiday) there would be someone to give a tour. But in this two-story building, equivalent to a 2-flat in Chicago, it was easy to handle as a self-guided tour. Certainly we came a way with a few questions unanswered, but that's a reason to go back. For the small town of Marshall, this is one of their few major attractions. Every square inch of the walls on both floors was covered by colorful posters announcing two centuries of magic acts around the world (a few are in other languages). For any fan of stage or amateur magic, this is a place not to be missed! Who knew there were so many Chinese (or would-be Chinese) magicians from the past? Each floor has a presentation area (with recycled church pews as audience seating), so on some day other than during a holiday week, there are probably some demonstrations given here. The general admission is quite reasonable ($5 a head) to help maintain such a vast collection. So if you are heading across Michigan to Detroit or visiting the nearby cities of Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, or Grand Rapids, drop into the friendly town of Marshall, which lost out in the 19th Century to become the state's capitol, but still has many of the touches the city fathers gave it in their bid for that honor. read more

What a great museum! Had fun exploring the jam packed magic museum on my way through Michigan! The curator was so friendly and knowledgeable and there was help all around to answer questions. This place is in the heart of the old, beautiful downtown area and the building itself is very neat. Posters line the walls and the exhibits are fabulous! Pick up a trick before leaving and impress all your friends! :) read more

This is a wonderful treasure in Marshall. The museum curator or even a local magician who happens to visit will give you a personal tour of the museum pieces. They range from a milk can said to have been used by world-famous Houdini to pieces used by Milky the Clown, a Michigan favorite of the 50's. This is a place for every adult who was once or still is intrigued by magic. Isn't that all of us? It would be a great place for an outing with a child to share the fun. By the way, the museum runs one-week Magic camps in July and August for children ages 7-14. . read more

Voila! Watch your $5 disappear! A couple of cool videos and optical illusions, but mostly this two store ramshackle building just has a bunch of posters and no real information, exhibits, history or anything remotely interesting. Avoid and just go down a YouTube rabbit hole instead if you're curious about magic. read more

It is worth it to learn the history of each of the owners and the story behind the rooms and artifacts in them. Many of the owners were influential politicians and lawmakers in Michigan's history. I enjoyed the story of one of the owners, Charles Gorham, who was an anti-slavery activist and ambassador to the Netherlands. Free parking for museum patrons is located at the back of the house on Parkview Street.

The museum has a few special exhibits as well as a permanent collection that includes a ton of information on the history of Kalamazoo, a mummy, and a planetarium. (The planetarium show is $3 per person.) We learned about the Kalamazoo State Hospital and explored the super cool traveling exhibit Skin: Living Armor, Evolving Identity. I learned a lot about animals' skin and their adaptations, how skin has informed technology, and how skin has affected people historically in terms of racism and prejudice. There are a few interactive elements to the exhibit but I think it would be best for middle school kids and up. The museum overall was well kept and for the most part had working installations. I saw some kids playing and the history of Kalamazoo was really interesting. It took us about two hours to explore the museum. It's not a place I need to go every time I'm in Kalamazoo, but I would say if you're a local and have never been, you should check it out. Or if you're visiting and looking for an indoor activity!
