Hands down, this is the *best* place in Union and probably the best place in New Jersey to get your hair cut. The owner, Manny, has been cutting my hair regularly for over a year now, and I am always happy with the results. Beyond the quality of Manny's cuts, it's the level of service and respect for their clients that I value the most about American Shave. When I make an appointment for a cut I know that they will be ready to take me on time. If I have to wait, it's because I'm early, never because they're late. Nice place, easy to schedule. Jose did a good job with a basic haircut but I have to say, I'm not a big fan of paying in advance.

Overall negative experience. Barber didn't disclose that he doesn't speak English until halfway through the haircut. I'm not sure why he pretended to understand the instructions that I gave him. The cut was bad- he did things that I told him not to do. I chalk this up to the language barrier. Something else that I particularly did not enjoy was the barber putting styling product in my hair without asking and before I could confirm that I liked the cut, not that he could understand. It's perfectly fine for the barber to be non-English-speaking, but that barrier needs to be expressed at some point before hair is shaved or cut. I won't be returning. You should avoid Jenderson like the plague. read more

I had a great haircut by Nick twice in the past few months. Both times he took great care in giving the perfect shade at the back and around the ears. He was super patient and knowledgeable about working with my spiky Asian hair. The place has good music, ample space between seats, lots of TVs and a comfy lounge feel. I came in last week for a trim. It was more than a shape-up so I got the classic cut. Cool setup here with magazines and Esquire channel on the TV. I never understood who would watch the Esquire channel. But, if fits in in these type of places. Kevin was my pilot and he had excellent communication skill making sure what I wanted and he delivered. I just wanted a trim around my ears and thin out my my forest of hair. I ended up looking like I didn't get a haircut. They use the compressed air to shoo away your hair. But it's very loud. It's better than a blow dryer i guess. I'd come back here in a few months for a hot shave once I grow more face grass. Credit card accepted. Street parking might be hard to come by. I think you can parking the shared parking lot. You best be a customer or the Union rent a cop on his wannabe segway will ticket you. I didn't check out the bathroom like I always do at most places. But, I'm sure it's manly. read more

I got married in July and decided to treat myself to a shave and a haircut 2 days before my wedding. I sat down in the chair and got my haircut (which was just OK) and then it was time for the shave. It started out nice with the hot towels and shaving cream, but the second the straight blade came out, that is when the trouble started. I got nicked really bad on the right side of my face and could feel the blood dripping. I also got nicked (although not as bad) on the left side of my face. I didn't get an apology or anything. I actually didn't know how bad it was until I got home. It was a pretty big cut, the whole wound was the size of a dime. I could have gotten a better shave with a disposable razor. We just got our wedding pictures back, and this dime sized cut is in almost EVERY picture. It looks awful. I will never come to this place again. I came across this shop, American Shave. Went in around noon, didn't wait very long, and a nice lady brought me a coffee. The bottom line: Juan cut my hair and laced me up better than most barbers who've ever cut my hair. I told him what I wanted and he exceeded my expectations. I went to American Classic Shave a couple of months ago for a haircut. I was looking for a good barber place in Essex/Union county and just walked in without making an appointment. They were about to close down for the day, but Manny was kind enough to keep the place open and sat me down for a haircut. He spent a good amount of time asking questions and trying to understand exactly what I was looking for. So in summary: great cut and great service. Will be going there again. I had been looking for a decent place around here to get my beard trimmed and what not and hadn't been able to find one. I didn't want to go to some place that would just take clippers to my goatee and charge me $20. American Shave is not only wicked cool (obviously aimed towards men) on the inside, but the guys there make you feel OK about getting your haircut by a man (as a man who has always had women). Andrew, who did my goatee and shave, was very meticulous at what he did paying a lot of attention to detail. Honestly, the shave and beard trimming took longer than a normal haircut for me would take. I didn't need a haircut this time, but plan on going back to check that out as well even though it's a bit out of my way. If you are meticulous about your beard (or hair, I assume) and don't have the time or patience to groom it all the time, this is a great place. I plan on going here once a month from now on just for this. I don't think my goatee has ever been so neat! Price was great, too... only $15 for a hot lather straight edge shave and the goatee trimming. read more

Went there for a hot shave today. Had a terrible experience, didn't get a hot shave at the beginning because they got it wrong, the girl was very nice but she hacked me up! I paid and left only to realize that it was the worst shave I had ever seen, left patches everywhere. I went back and should've asked for my money back, but let her try to fix it instead. What a mistake, still wasn't right and feels like I shaved with a rusty blade and no shaving cream. Hours later my face is still on fire. Never Again! read more

American Shave is an extremely nice, upscale barber shop. The decor is awesome, and really makes you feel nice when going to get your ears lowered. Great design and layout, leather couches in the waiting area, and good music playing throughout the shop. About 6 barbers on call, and it's usually by appointment only. They also have a system for making an appointment via text message, which is extremely efficient and modern. The place is staffed with great cutters, and they give you a complimentary hair wash afterward (which is always a plus). A haircut is about $20, but you get what you pay for. They also sell hair products galore, as well as throwback razors. Definitely my place of choice for a haircut, and I'd recommend it to anyone in Union needing a good experience. read more

They don't care about you as a client!!! If you're 10 mins late they. cancel your appointment with no follow up call and KEEP your deposit WITHOUT EVEN TRYING TO GET YOU TO FIT IN THE SCHEDULE. They don't really care about you as a person they don't try to develop relationships you're just a number and their only concern is collecting payment. This place has terrible customer service and the owner has no compassion whatsoever. I arrived here at 6:25p after I found out that my sons barber shop closed at 6p. I asked if they can do just a line up on my son because he was going on a cruise the next day and I got off of work late. I practically begged these people, mind you they didn't close until 7p. They told me NO, then I had her ask the owner, he didn't even turn to look and see who it was nor did he want to hear that my son had a cruise the next morning. I was desperate to have his hair lined up so he'd look good for his week long cruise. THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO TREAT CUSTOMERS! The shop looks nice. Hair cut was just ok. Now the negatives and reason for 2 stars. After I got home I realized the right and left sides around the ear are very uneven. For a $22 hair cut no wash was included which surprised me. The hair cut seemed rushed. And the biggest turn off was that they charge you a $3 surcharge if you pay by credit card. read more
