I'm probably ruining this little secret, but the pan pizza here is that wonderful. Yes, pan! The place only makes pan-style pizzas, a departure from the normal flattened out and thrown in the oven that dominates Mons. It's fairly unassuming, with limited "good" seating. The oven is ancient electric thing. But the chefs here make up by providing a quality product with fresh made everything. Give it a shot!

It was the first one in the area where you can order from a screen, pay there and then have somebody bring your food to you. It's a lot better than standing in line!! This last visit I was only there for a coffee and burger as my wife shopped. This is a very inexpensive meal, so kudos there to McDonalds!

It was obviously a popular spot with the locals since there were plenty sitting at the bar. The service was great despite a language barrier. I do try with my French but it only goes so far. We each got a burger with fries and there are tons of sauce choices. I like spicy so I went with the samurai. The wife went straight mayo. Great beer selection at a decent price. For two burgers and 3 beers, it was 28 €.

Like the other few cafes close by, they put out stalls to sell beer to those going to the game. Taverne 44 is also a "friterie" where they serve those famous Belgian fries (with many different sauces including mayonnaise!) and other friterie snacks such as burgers, brochettes, frikandels and so on. Friendly service, quaint atmosphere and solid prices. Check out their website for hours. They are closed on Wednesday's and their hours fluctuate by day. They often open at 630PM for dinner but have noticed they are occasionally open for lunch as well. What can I say, Italian in Belgium... The portions are very generous. You can easily share a plate and still be satisfied. I enjoyed the carbonara. A little "wetter" than expected but still delicious. One of my companions order a mac & cheese type meal that looked fantastic. I so wish I could read french and note which dish it was. Essentially included some other spicy meats and tasted delecious. There pizza is also very good and they have a large variety. Tip for Americans visiting: The margarita pizza is simply a cheese pizza.
