I had a very frustrating experience with American Van Lines. I was originally emailed a confirmation for my pickup date, but when I called the next day I was suddenly told the date had been changed without any notice. I spent over an hour on the phone explaining that I absolutely needed my belongings picked up that day. Eventually they agreed, but the movers still arrived late. To make matters worse, when they arrived they tried to charge me extra to wrap my mirrors, even though I had already called ahead of time and was specifically told that this was included in my move. Now it has been a week and I still cannot get a clear update on where my belongings are or when they will arrive. The lack of communication and organization has been extremely frustrating. I trusted this company with my entire household, and the experience has been very disappointing. I would strongly suggest others be cautious before using this company. read more

We used American Van Lines to pack our belongings and move from VA to NC. First impressions...they had their act together. The initial call, the virtual walk through, the price and the sales person made me feel like we made the right decision. Even when I had to change my packing/moving date, no issues. A few days before the move, they sent the inventory list from the virtual walk through and there were things missing. Of course, now they want more money which I had to pay half or they wouldn't come for the move. Then moving day...4 guys show up, lead guy spoke English, the rest did not. From the get go, I could tell they only wanted to get in and out with little regard to our belongings. No labeling of boxes, stuff just thrown in boxes, belongings getting crushed by the weight of stuff thrown on top and no consideration for anything fragile. To make things worst, the lead guy left mid day so there was no way to communicate with the three that were left to finish. Surprisingly, it does appear everything made it to the destination but not all in one piece, however, the morning they were supposed to deliver, the driver called and said they forgot to collect the rest of the payment and that they would not deliver until payment was made which was on the weekend so you can imagine how difficult it was to get somebody to make a payment, but was finally able to get someone. Handmade Christmas ornaments got broken, business suits stuffed in boxes(even when we paid for wardrobe boxes) and really there are too many things to list that will not be usable again. If you need a moving company to pack and move your belongings, I strongly advise you to not use American Van Lines, but if you do, pack your own stuff if you want to be able to use it again. read more

AVL started out with a detailed and great quote but ended up giving terrible service and charging me 1 1/2 times more than their quote. They couldn't tell me which day the moving truck would arrive until less than 24 hrs before it did arrive. Then they told me a date for delivery and then were 2 weeks off from the actual date. When they called on a Fri to tell me my stuff would arrive Sun they gave me 6 hrs to pre-pay the $10,000 (the balance of the new quote). I was not at home and didn't have the access I needed to funds so had to stress and scramble for a company that hadn't even bothered to give me a reasonable estimate of times and cost. I will NEVER use this company again and I'm urging friends who are moving to stay clear. Moving is stressful enough without dealing with a disorganized and overpriced moving company. read more

Horrible company. Contracts are a mess - all digital (until you make a claim, then they mail a letter and contract as described below), the representatives insist they can't alter even obvious errors. Little notice before pick-up, no notice before delivery at all (got a phone call in Target). Their movers broke/scratched/otherwise damaged many things, then one of them asked for my number and called and texted me repeatedly while I tried to unpack. (When I texted him a suggestion that he find someone else, he immediately called me to insist that he wasn't interested in me.) Now, they won't honor the claim. They say the contract had to be signed within thirty days. However, they say they sent it in December, but it never arrived. I had to call them to ask what was going on. When they finally got the contract to me, it still had December's date, so they tried to argue that I hadn't signed within the required period. (Note: They are the ones who required a thirty-day turnaround, so they could waive that requirement.) Moreover, their contract contained a blatantly illegal requirement that I delete or revise all negative reviews and never say anything bad about them. (The relevant law is the Consumer Review Fairness Act.) I hadn't actually made any, as I like to give companies a chance to fix their mistakes. AVL whiffed on that one. Overall, they make it incredibly difficult for people to do business with them. People who are moving do get pushed into difficult situations, but at least try to avoid getting pushed into working with AVL. read more

Our issue is with American Van Lines policy only! No problem packing and picking furiture up on specific requested date, but a completely different story when trying to get furniture delivered out of storage (3-21 day window)! What's worse, they couldn't even schedule a later date! I spent hundreds in extra dollars staying at an airbnb even though I closed on my new house (waiting on furniture to be delivered). You were forced to call numerous times to see when a truck was finally arriving. No mention of this policy when signing up. Packers disassembled things that were not correctly labeled and not reassembled on destination end. As a result, I have a completely useless 11' outdoor umbrella and garage workbench ($1000+-). Hardware is nowhere to be found! Drivers do not control sub-contracted workers, resulting in powerless ability to get job done in a timely manner. What should've taken less than 2 days to load, took 3 days. I paid an extra $200 for a night in an airbnb that I couldn't use. Both of my drivers were excellent (Joe and David). Customer service was non-existent. I mentioned that we had a problem with contracted crew wearing a mask, but asked not to say anything because we were able to work around. I also understand that wearing a mask when doing that type of work is difficult. Cust Serv rep ignored our plea and immediately complained to a hard-working crew just trying to feed their families. Again-AVL policy above customer's requirement. Crew arrived with 7 workers to unload truck in one day. Given the length and terrain of the driveway, it was decided that a u-haul shuttle truck should be rented (200-300 dollars?) AVL policy requires a charge of $3250. They were done by 5pm with the same anticipated crew, but $3250 richer less the cost of the one day rental. When questioning the cust service rep, nothing they can do about it. I understand that things get broken during a move, so I won't list the numerous items that were damaged. That's acceptable. If this is the best service you can provide, it is not good enough for anyone I know. Your established policies are not in place to represent your customers, and only serve your bottom line. read more

This has been one of the worst moving experiences ever. This company as a huge lack of organization. I get calls from 3 different people asking me a question to which I have already provided an answer for. Also, they are seriously lacking on customer service and compassion. They are quick to pass the blame onto each other and take no sense of responsibility for their part. I have called countless times and have been made promises that were not kept about figuring out when my furniture would be delivered. I spoke to one representative on the phone yesterday that was completely rude and unprofessional. I would not recommend using this company to move any of your things if you plan on receiving any accurate information or decent customer service. We had the misfortune of making the mistake of using this moving company almost a year ago and have had nothing but problems from the beginning of the move until now. From lies about calling to obtain our time frame and date for the move to constantly being told that we could call "The next day" to obtain the date and time of the move only to be lied to that it's too soon to call for any time/date estimate. After 8 attempts to obtain a scheduled date and time I was still not given the information as I was told. This created significant issues with my new employer. I had to travel back to the state of my previous residence, Tennessee, and wait to receive an estimate when I was repeatedly told by American Van Lines representatives that this would not be the case. American Van Lines finally gave me an estimate a day before the move of between 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. The movers did not arrive until 7:00 P.M. at night and did not finish packing up until well after 1:00 A.M. To say the movers were clumsy is a serious understatement. They couldn't back up the truck properly and gouged our concrete driveway. In addition they damaged the walls in our master bedroom that I had to repair as we were selling our home. I could not leave the walls damaged. After this we were told that we would need to be at the new condo we rented in Pennsylvania to let the movers in at a time we could not possibly arrive due to the moving companies own delays. Yet somehow this was our fault and we would have to pay for storage of our items until we arrived to let the movers in. After arguing with a representative about how this was absolute nonsense they finally came to their senses and realized that the fault was their own. We immediately drove from Tennessee to Pennsylvania overnight. A 12 hour trip. The clumsy movers showed up and caused damage to our furniture and the walls of the condo that we're renting. They damaged just about everything they took off of their truck. From the work desk we have, which they tore a large chunk out of at the top, a nice new king sized bed frame where they destroyed the wood backing to the headboard, and a dining room table that they chipped up in just about every location they can get their hands on. We filed a claim over these damages based on their own insurance coverage amounts which is the weight of the item times 60 cents. The total of the claim amount came to $1197.48. What they offered us in return was $600.00. Half the amount of the claim. After arguing with them over this they offer a total of $818.00. Still less than the $1197.48 claim we submitted. Their augment is that they base the weight of each item in the claim on estimated "military weights" and we were using the estimated weights that they supplied to us. So they substitute one guesstimate for another. They refuse to work with us any further to pay us the full amount for all damages despite the horrible experience we've had with them. The bottom line is that this was an absolutely HORRIBLE experience from the beginning. 4 months to complete claims processing with an excuse of" That's the industry standard" which translates into "We're no better than anyone else.". Save yourself the trouble and headaches. Find a better moving company and avoid American Van Lines. This has been the worst experience I've ever had with any company that I've done business with. read more

Made a short distance local move. Sent a crew of three who did a great job moving our furniture. Moving day was hectic and I had not quite finished clearing some items in a bedroom, movers said no worries we can place those few items in the furniture and get you moved. I did not realize that one of the items was a small porcelain ring box with two diamond rings and an opal ring. As I was unpacking the day following the move, I opened my night stand and found the ring box had been stuffed in a cabinet with books and my first thought was I can't believe they just threw this in here, it could have broken- my second response was shock when the rings were gone. Five days after the move I was contacted by my credit card company regarding over $1500 worth of fraudulent charges in two other states. I was required to write my account number down on paper forms for the movers as there was no avenue to pay the bill via phone or with a card reader. I have contacted the company multiple times over the past three months and on 9/28 and I was assured I would hear from the Vice President of Customer Service again, crickets as of today. read more

This company is the worst company I have ever experienced. It's been 10 days and we still did not get our furniture, we moved out of state and we have nowhere to sleep and no work clothes. Their Sales Associated are liars, they promised us that our furniture would be delivered in 2 to 3 days. They are no capable of keep us updated or even tell us the truth about the situation and where our furniture is. They do not return phone calls and ignore voicemails. I just relocated to Greensboro and had my things in a private storage until I could find an apartment. I called American Van Lines based on the reviews at consumeraffairs.com. I have only used long distance movers before, but because of just moving here, I don't know anyone that could help me move, so I called and they fit me in with only 3 days notice. They sent 2 men. Once we got to my apartment, the first thing they did was put down floor protection! My long distance movers never did that. They put my bed back together, reassembled my kitchen table and reattached my mirror to my dresser. There are not enough words to say how outstanding these 2 guys are!. Mike Dorsett was the driver and Ricky was the helper. They treated me like I was a VIP even though it was only a 1 bedroom apartment. They were very respectful, efficient, CLEAN, and fast. My experience with American Van Lines has been entirely negative. I signed a contract with this company in June 2017. The sales representative failed to process the job that I booked. In August, upon discovering that my job had not been properly booked, despite that I had a SIGNED CONTRACT, the company refused to honor the price quoted to me in June. Moreover, I was told that no vans were available on my preferred move out date. They increased the price of my move by MORE THAN $1200. I agreed to book a new van with American Van Lines as long as they were able to get me out of my apartment before my lease ended. (This was very short notice and I was worried I would have trouble finding another company). I was repeatedly assured that I was in no danger of needing to extend my lease. This was a lie. For a SECOND time, they failed to properly book my move. (They gave me the excuse that because this was a company move, they were not used to the booking process, despite that my sales agent claimed 10+ years of experience.) To recap, this company rescheduled by move date TWICE, increased the price of my move by more than $700, and refused to honor a signed contract. I had to extend the lease on the apartment I was leaving in order to avoid finding another company at the last minute. I was told that a manager would contact me to resolve my complaints. This was a lie. No manager contacted me. Several of my items were broken during the move including a clock, a shelf, and a bed stand. American Van Lines was supposed to contact my employer to receive payment for the move. My move was in August. American Van Lines sent an invoice to my employer more than 6 MONTHS LATER in February 2018. At the turn of the new year, the rules regarding moving reimbursement changed. It is no longer possible for my employer to pay the moving company directly. I will have to pay out of pocket and receive reimbursement from my employer. I am now responsible for paying taxes on all moving expensive because American Van Lines couldn't process my invoice in fewer than 5 months. I am furious. I will never use this company again. I would caution anyone against using them. read more
