Yango Jackson dba Absolute Carpet, Tile & Hardwood Floor Refinishing is nothing short of a con man…read morewith a van, a logo, and invoicing software. Don't be fooled. He does not have the skills or knowledge to complete even the most basic hardwood refinishing jobs to satisfaction. Things started off well. I scheduled an estimate to refinish a bedroom floor and the main staircase in my home. Communication was great and he showed up promptly at the agreed upon time. He measured the rooms, discussed finishes, and sent the estimates for approval the same day. I approved only the staircase job because it was less expensive and I wanted to see his work prior to agreeing to have the bedroom floor work completed by him. We discussed a number of possible dates for the job, but didn't make an appointment for the work. A few days later, while I was out, I receive a message saying he was on the way to complete the job. Panicked, I called him to say that we hadn't yet agreed on a date and that I was currently out. He agreed to reschedule the job and sent confirmation of the service date via email. However, that was the first of many signs that the job would not go well. On the date of service, he arrived without the necessary tools to complete the job. He complained that the existing carpeting was installed using carpet strips rather than being nailed directly into the wood. I should have stopped him then. I asked if we should reschedule and voiced my concern that he didn't have the necessary tools to remove the carpet without damaging the hardwood stairs. After a bit of an uncomfortable stare down, he asked if I owned a hammer and a small chisel. Alarmed, I said I did not and almost sent him on his way. He then pulled violently at the carpet ripping it. I'd found a hammer by then and gave it to him. I shouldn't have. He then proceeded to dig large chips into all of the hardwood stairs while removing the carpet strips. Though I noticed, I figured the damage had already been done and prayed that he would me able to smooth out the large chips during the sanding process. I was having the stairs refinished to address two small chips where a mirror had fallen. The stairs were in otherwise perfect condition. I assumed he'd fill and sand the new imperfections at the same time. Boy, was I wrong. In the end, he spread a bunch of filler on the stairs and sanded by hand in no specific direction. None of the chips were leveled. Not the original two or those he'd created. My stairs which are in the entryway and visible to all guests now have dozens of chips (no exaggeration), dark speckled areas, areas with a super light finish, areas with glossy finish, and areas with a matte finish. When I told him I was unhappy with his work, he suggested I paint the steps. My stairs matched all of the existing woodwork in my house. Also, I do not want a painted staircase nor do I believe it matches the character of the house. He said he always advises his customers to paint staircases. I suspect it is after he's ruined them. In any event, I tried to solve a very small issue and now have a disaster of a staircase in my entryway. To have them replaced would cost tens of thousands of dollars. So, I am going to take off work and attempt to sand, fill, and stain myself. I guess he's a nice enough guy, but he's not a skilled floor person. I would not use his services again. You're better off refinishing your own floors/stairs. At least then, you won't end up with chunks of missing wood.
