We just returned from our 5 day trip on the Devils River. We launched at Bakers Crossing. DW (The Viking) was our guide, he was very knowledgeable of the river and had plenty of local stories to tell us to keep us entertained on the way to Bakers Crossing, 5 days later he was right on time at mile 30 to pick us up. We shared funny stores of our adventures along the way and he again kept us chuckling with funny stories of local whatnot on the way back. On the way out of town we had an issue with the trailer carrying our Kayaks. Guess who happened to drive by and lend a hand? Yep, DW. This was our second 30 mike trip on the Devils. Booked a trip with this company and I would not recommend then to anyone. Ownet is the rudest person I've ever dealt with. Major storm hit and instead of making sure her clients were ok she went to a concert and gave zero shits that we almost drown!! Horrible do not book with them read more

We rented four kayaks, 2-diablos amigos and 2- Jackson Bite Anglers from Amistad Expeditions and used them to shuttle us to and from the river. Jarrett our shuttle driver was fantastic with lots of Information and stories. Our 2-nights and 3-days on the river were unbelievable. The water, stars, scenery, and quiet were everything and more than we expected. Being first time white-water kayakers we read and watched everything we could over the last 6-months but we were still very inexperienced and thus our reliance on the outfitter. However the equipment was not up to par. All four kayaks had issues and so did all four oars and the spare. Busted tie down netting, missing oar tie downs, duct taped oars, missing or torn rubber grips and keepers on the oars and one chair missing half the top frame which made for a very uncomfortable seat. We ended up duct tapping one life preserver to the seat back to make it bearable. The storage compartment gaskets on the Diablos were torn with chunks missing so water in those two kayaks was a constant issue. We had dry bags but draining these two kayaks to keep them at least partially controllable was a chore. We obviously should have been more observant at the facility but the kayaks and equipment were already loaded on the trailer and when we did point out the seat problem at the drop off spot it was too late for us or Jarrett to do anything about it. We definitely learned our lesson not to trust this outfitter with the equipment they rent. You need to check everything before you leave their shop. I gave them 2-stars because In spite of the equipment issues it is a fantastic experience. Enjoy, but do your inspections!!! read more

I'm a professional kayak guide and instructor. I've paddled the Devils River at least 30 times in 30 yrs. I've used Amistad Expeditions for over 5 yrs for all my shuttle services and river information. All of the staff...Darren, Nikki, DW and Grandpa Daryl are very professional, courteous, knowledgeable and patient. They've always met my time schedules and love to accommodate my clients. We have just returned from a 2 day kayak trip down the Devil's River using them as an outfitter. They use Jackson Coosa Kayak's which we are sold on! We watched video's on these before booking our trip and can't imagine getting down this river, especially with the amount of volumne of water, flowing, during our trip. D.W. was our driver and we did appreciate him. A storm was comping up as he was dropping us at our camp site and he stayed so that we could ride it out in his truck and play it safe. The kayaks though, needed repairs. These are supposed to have a water proof pouch for you to keep a wallet and cell phone in and only 1 of our 3 had one. All 3 kayaks were missing the foot rest/support which were needed for when there is a drop of 30' or so over a boulder field. We were told that the kayaks get beat up and we are sure that is true, but you should expect your boat to have all its pieces when you are heading into a trek like this. The life jackets they provide are the bulky orange vests that would be very uncomfortable to wear, and thus, aren't and should be. They are well organized and on schedule but you need to ask a lot of questions and try to anticipate your situation. We never saw another sole for two days on the river and there is no cell service. It would be very easy to get seriously hurt on this river so be as prepared as you can be. read more

We had a great trip on the Devils River from Baker's Crossing to the SNA at Dan A. Hughes Unit over 3 days and 2 nights. The service was friendly and punctual, which is really great on taking out of the river when you are exhausted and are ready to appreciate a good pillow and indoor plumbing! The Devils is a challenging trip even for experienced paddlers-I doubted my sanity of going after Day 1, however once I realized this wasn't going to be a nice leisurely paddle down a deep river, I went ahead and did what the river said I was going to do.
