    Sunset beyond my campsite

HOT SHOWERS I have been car camping across Texas and (due to Covid) the past few campgrounds I had been to did not have their showers available. The park staff here were so kind. They told me they had just finished sanitizing the bathrooms. They were very helpful with giving me info about the park. I'm a bird watcher so I really loved the bird blind which gave me an up close look at the birds. This park is famous for the Mexican Free-tail Bat colony but December (when I visited) was too late to see them. I still enjoyed my time here throughly! Would come back again, maybe during a tad warmer time of year (I'm from Florida so this whole Texas trip has been a bit colder than I'd like haha)

Had a really great time! Went in knowing nothing, missing the cave tour as it's done on Saturday! The bats left a few weeks ago, but there are tons of other animals around! There are armadillos, roadrunners, porcupine, deer, hawks and ring tailed cats! We only stayed a night but loved it all, the weather was great, the ranger and his wife were really nice and it was a very clean and well maintained campsite, as well as peaceful and quiet, we will be back next year for the cave swallows! Also watch out for border patrol! They will pull you over and interrogate you! Don't forget your license at home or your Miranda rights.

Kickapoo Cavern is a great place to camp and hike. And it was so cool to see the 3 million Mexican fruit bats leave the cave for about 45 minutes! The optimal time to see the bats is summer to October so go check it out. The hikes were pretty around Kickapoo. I was bummed that we couldn't do the hike inside the cavern due to COVID as I heard it was a great to get in there. I was surprised there wasn't a bat smell. Kickapoo was a fun weekend for camping.

Beautiful scenery along the way from Fort Clark Springs. Didn't pass a car for 25 miles.

Cave tour is awesome and well worth the $10 fee. The park is a little disorganized and the trails are not labeled.

I loved lost maples, it is a beautiful state park/natural area. I went for the first time in…read moreNovember with my mom hoping to catch some foliage and we definitely did see plenty both on the way and at the park! The trail isn't too hard; I did the east loop going clockwise since the volunteers told me there was probably a little better foliage along this loop than the west loop. I was able to do the whole thing and return to where I started in a little under 2 hours. It was a relatively warm day; I was grateful i bought my personal fan when going up the steep part because I was definitely starting to sweat! After that though it was mostly flat and then back downhill so no issues with getting hot. I got several lovely photos along the way and was certainly reminded how gorgeous and colorful Texas can be! Only note: be sure to make a timed entry reservation if you go during the peak season (fall) because it absolutely sells out! I tried going with a friend last year and we didn't have a res and we were turned away - we ended up going to Garner state park which is also gorgeous and fun, about 30 mins drive away from lost maples. This year we got entry for the 11a-1p entry time, and by the week or so prior to going, everything was sold out for that Saturday we were going. So bear that in mind!

Park office staff very helpful. We went late Feb and parking was fine but I hear the horror stories…read moreregarding parking in the fall and can see why. VERY limited parking for busier times.
