Long trip from Florence SC to Wilmington DE. Summer train was full. AC was not the best and…read moreinternet was weak. The train stopped on the tracks twice maintenance issues. Ended up being an hour late on a 10 hour trip. The smells were tough. People eating smelly things and then passing gas. This is the second train trip this happened recently. Lady behind was yelling into her cell phone on speaker until the conductors told her to pipe down. Overall the Amtrak staff and food car was nice. Bathroom was not bad. I had 3 sons with me. They did fine. Overall 3 out of 5. Average transportation. Could be better.

It was my first time in memory riding the train from Charleston SC to Deland Florida. I wish I had…read morebrought a blanket and pillow because early in the morning the train car was comfortable and cool. After a while, cool becomes cold with only short sleeves and cargo shorts on. I did ask but they no longer provide pillows and blankets. A word to the prepper, bring whatever you think you might need. The train car was clean and there were 2 restrooms (one for handicapped). I didn't op for a sleeping car but there were 32 sleepers on the train. Most stops were only drop offs or pick ups. We did have one stop that was about 20 minutes long. Altogether it was a novel experience and much more economical than flying provided you have the time.

The cab was clean and the driver very courteous and respectful. I paid by credit card which he wrote down by hand which was a little different. Nevertheless for being basically out in the middle of nowhere, I was very happy with the service.

Before making our way back home to Savannah from South Carolina, I researched some towns off of…read moreI-95 and Yemassee seemed like the perfect, quaint little town to stop. The Train Station is an official stop on Amtrak and came up as one of the things to see. The building seemed new-ish and well kept. When we arrived, it was pretty deserted. There was not a soul to be found and all the doors seemed to be locked. I looked up the Amtrak website and there is nothing available here, no services or facilities. I think you have to purchase a ticket online and you just show up to either ride the train or get dropped off at this location. According to the good ol' internet, the station was purchased in 2010 by the town of Yemassee for one dollar. However, while we were there, we ran into two older gentlemen and they discredited that rumor. One of the men said something about the station being purchased during his tenure as Mayor and said something that if they bought the station for one dollar, they were doing pretty good...or something along those lines. Well, how about that? Meeting a former Mayor of Yemassee! One cool fact about this station is that between 1915 to 1965, it is estimated that at least half a million Marine recruits started their careers at Yemassee train station as they passed through here to make their way to Parris Island. There is a plaque on the station wall to recognize this. I wouldn't say you should go out of your way to see the station, but it was cool to run into a former mayor and learn about the history of the station. Also, during our time there (about a total of 15 minutes), there were multiple trains and other train components (not sure what they are called, but maybe maintenance type trains?) that passed us and it was fun for my kids to wave to.

We finally made it to our destination 3 hours later. The private room was not like in the picture…read moreshown when I made the reservation. The reclining seating opens to a full side bed that was very comfortable. The upper bed we open and use it as storage for our 4 luggages. There was ample and very spacious head room below to sit. I thought the private cabin had USB ports, it didn't. Overall, it was roomy. As for the bathroom suite, it has a toilet, sink and shower hose. To me, it's actually an Asian style bathroom with no shower stall, just floor drain, bathing in the same location as toilet and sink. Make sure your toilet paper is not anywhere near the shower spray, or it will be drenched. We had room service with complimentary lunch and dinner meals on train. Angus burger for lunch and sirloin steak for dinner. It tasted very good, especially the desserts. Service was good but the delay is why I took off 2 stars. Suppose to arrive at 1:41am, got there a little after 5:30am
