What used to be the old Anacortes library is now a charming museum about the history of Anacortes…read more When we walked in there was a worker (seemingly a volunteer) who greeted us and walked us through some of the basic history of the city. Part of the museum talks about the boom and bust times and how Anacortes vied for the railroad to go through the city but failed to do so. There were also a lot of antiques from 100+ years ago like telephones, cash registers, and a piano. The other half of the museum was a photography showing off different local artists. The one thing that this museum taught me was the origin of the name Anacortes. The name came from a journalist's wife: Anna Curtis. I was also curious of the origins of the town name and I finally found it! This is a nice place to learn about the history of Anacortes and should be a stop if you're in the area and it's open.

In general, I'm not sure if I would go out of my way to come back but with kids who like small things, trains, dioramas, it was worth doing! I think we were in and out in about an hour. I bet some kids could zoom through in less time (then maybe not worth the price?) and some kids might take 1.5-2 hours, so maybe try to gauge if you think its something you/your family would enjoy. Some displays had buttons that didn't work but for the most part if you looked or read the placard you could figure out what was going on.

It was clear that a lot of time and talent went into many of the exhibits. That said, the experience felt a bit inconsistent. Some areas were much more engaging than others, and a few of the displays didn't have the same level of detail. At times, multiple audio narrations were playing at once, which made it difficult to focus and became a little overwhelming. We also noticed that several of the interactive buttons and TV displays weren't working during our visit. For $19, I don't regret stopping by, but it just wasn't quite what I was expecting. For me, it's more of a one-time attraction than somewhere I'd visit again. If you enjoy miniature art and displays, it may be worth checking out, but it ultimately wasn't the right fit for my interests.

There are two stories with both stair and elevator access. The store also has lots of cool things to buy and we found some goodies for our 5 year old. I recommend coming by and taking a look.

There are about five parking spots in the small lot right next to the museum and street parking otherwise. The day that we went was actually the first day that it was open after being closed for a while. We explored some of the exhibits and one thing that caught our eye was an art piece that seemingly had some trash (like a burger bun wrapper) which was confusing. When we left we talked to the docent and she explained that it's there on purpose and many people had been asking about the very same thing. There were also some other exhibits of local artists on both the first and second floors. There's also a gift shop if you want to shop around. It's a nice place to check out some local art and support local artists.

The displays told a story from the dinosaurs all the way to modern Victoria. Everything was so thought out and interesting. The museum also had a limited time Egyptian display that was fascinating with tombs, everyday utensils and personal items and other artifacts.
