Our "Coast to Coast Road Trip" has taken us to a number of play areas. This is one of the best, or…read moreat least most captivating, we've come across. Our two-and-a-half year old played for almost two hours on this magical wooden castle. The only things that keep it from a 5 star rating is the lack of a real bathroom and some of the wear and tear on equipment, particularly the leather ropes that have been worn down pretty significantly. It's sort of off the beaten path, but well worth a visit if you're in the area! MATERIALS: The support posts are all wood, but the flooring material is sturdy, composite all-weather stuff. Wear close-toed shoes, because it's a wood chip ground cover. There's grass on 3 sides outside of the play area. PLAY AREAS: - There's a dedicated Tot Lot for ages 2-5, which has tamer play equipment, and toddler/harness type swings. Our 2 year old is normally cautious about slides, but he really enjoyed the one in the Tot Lot area. - One unique feature was a little xylophone that actually sounded nice. The other musical element (some kind of pipes) has been jammed up with wood chips. Gee, who'd have guessed kids would stick would chips in the holes? ;) - The other, larger play area has a set of 4 'big kid' swings, a tire swing, at least 4 slides (both covered and open air), swinging rings, monkey bars, climbing and balancing ropes, and one of those fakey zipline things (just a rolling hand hold on a short track you hang from). There's plenty of stuff to climb. Our son liked running across the bridge because it kind of bounced around as he ran. AMENITIES: - There are 2 covered picnic areas with tables. - NO BATHROOM! I finally got a chance to come here with my neighbor and her toddler on a weekday and I was surprised how many kids were at the playground. However, we never felt crowded here and there are several playgrounds in the park, with one being in a slightly wooded section. Besides children's playgrounds, the park offers extensive greenways, sports facilities, and even, event spaces. Sports facilities include: baseball/softball fields, soccer field and an outdoor fitness center. On my next visit, I'm going to explore even more of the greenways and try to find the steel sculpture in the park called the "Quantum Embrace." Know before you go: 1) Lakeshore is open daily: 6 am - 10 pm 2) Plenty of parking spaces 3) There are public restrooms onsite 4) Events at the park hosted by the Roots & Revelry Group. There is a Porto Potty and covered area with picnic tables. It is toddler-friendly with an area for the littles with baby swings, smaller slides (one is currently broken), and even sandboxes. Note that it isn't fenced and there is a large water retention area with a bridge kids seem to be curious about. I grew up in IL with a very similar wooden park, also named Kids Castle, so it is nostalgic to bring my own kiddos here. Something for every age, expansive, and rarely many people here. In fact, we are often the only people there!

Variety of areas for differing age groups and something for everyone. The parking is easy and directly next to all the action. My two nit-picking suggestions? It would be great to have more bench seating directly surrounding the playground (especially for those who bring dogs but also want to keep an eye on kiddos) and a fenced playground would be amazing for the runners. I mention this because my original review had been removed and I was accused of writing a review for Deep Well Farm, without ever having been. I have taken my daughter, twice with her school, and I am the guy who paid for 2 wristbands, in the parking lot, with apple pay. Deep Well Farm advertises that, with admission, kids can choose their own pumpkin from a field. In practice, that has equated to "kids can pick out a pumpkin from massive cardboard bins of pumpkins, on skids", just like Walmart. After paying $10 for a very humble pumpkin, I was really surprised they hadn't even gone to the effort to lay the pumpkins in the dirt field, where they drop you off. My kid was unimpressed with the experience of going to an actual farm and picking a pumpkin out of a bin, just like Walmart.

When we arrived we were told due to drought and spraying of grass the corn died, but there is a small maze for the little ones. Let's just say it's the size of a baseball diamond and lame. Also no hay bales to play on due to mites. So basically it's a playground for $15 per person. Save yourself the $$ and go to a park. We will not be returning!!
