I came down here to get a couple of items for a house project that I completed today. ACE Hardware is located in a strip mall off the corner of Jewel Lake Rd. and W. Dimond Blvd. next to Great AK Pizza Co. The employees are very friendly and super helpful. I needed some Cork Stoppers to conceal some nails that were sticking through the ceiling in one of the basement rooms. The house itself is old, probably built in the 1960's, but jeez, whoever laid the wooden beams for the foundation of this house did a terrible job. There were nails sticking out or hanging off the beams as if the builder just left it there instead of using them. I pulled out most of them and used the Cork Stoppers to conceal the remaining nails that I couldn't remove. Not to deviate from the main subject, the employee knew exactly where to find the items I needed and directed me to the exact spot. There are hundreds if not thousands of small parts or accessories on the shelves. The Cork Stoppers were located in one of the aisles at the very end of the store where I would never think to look. I was impressed that he went through all the shelves and went straight to the Cork Stoppers a few seconds after I asked him where they were located. It should be noted that there is more than just hardware in this store. This is one of my favorite places to purchase Christmas decorations. The store boasts a large section devoted to holiday displays and many unique items can be found here that aren't normally in the big box stores. I was able to find some great Charlie Brown Christmas items for the house and the office. During the summer, they have a great BBQ section filled with the latest style of grills and an accompanying shelf stocked with various dry rubs and spices from local businesses down in the lower 48. Over by the cash registers, there are shelves filled with old-school candy and snacks from years past. Idaho Spud, Necco, and Mallo Cup are some of the nostalgic brands I came across. ACE is the closest hardware store and when possible my first choice. On some items the selection is limited but they usually have the frequent used items. Recently I was looking for a spark plug for my dinosaur snow blower and ACE had a couple options. While looking through the aisle, I grabbed some cold weather engine oil and an electric contact spray. Their layout made it easy to find all I needed in the same area. I always... ALWAYS have the best help and service here. This place has made my woman DIY lifestyle to fix up my house myself the best and easiest process. I will usually come here when I need advice or to talk to someone for help with fixer uppers around the house and I never get ignored! Right when I walk in most of the time it's right to it to a big greeting and if they can help me with anything! I've struggled these past two years without my husband being here but these People in this store have made me realize I'd rather support my local hardware store than go to those biggest ones we have in town. I went in today to get Christmas lights for the house and one of the guys patiently waited while I pulled up a picture of what I was looking for, then showed me my options and plugged them all in for me so I could see the different in brightness. I love this store. I can find a Christmas gift for anybody here. But also, the employees here know what they have and help you find stuff or answer questions or solve problems. Yesterday three of them helped me search the entire store for a tamp replacement for my coffee maker. It took 20 or 25 minutes and they were just seeming to have a blast helping out. I loved this store when it was the old True Value store but I REALLY love it now! It's very well organized and they have tons of gift-worthy items. Knowledge of the staff regarding hardware is not very impressive; and if I'm saying that, it's definitely true. Could have been the two people I tried, or could be an issue. I just returned to Anchorage after living many years in Portland. I've gotten used to running to Home Depot, which was right down the street. I did the same thing here until Ace Hardware had something Home Depot did not, which is why I visited. What a great place! This location has most hardware basics that you need for emergency repairs and projects. The hours are a bit more restrictive than one of the larger box hardware stores, but depending on where you live, you may save time and effort heading here instead. The staff is helpful and usually available. They have a surprisingly robust grilling section regardless of the season if you are looking for outdoor cooking accessories or even grills themselves. I called from Washington early in December to purchase a gift for our adult kids and asked if they could gift wrap and deliver. Then had to call and have them hold delivery until kids back home.
