Plus, the opening times are very convenient and the place is run by extremely friendly people (who will recognise and chat with you when you come in more than once) - so what more could you want? Prices are okay though. In the evening they offer the possibility to have a very nice "aperitivo", with a selection of the products. Defo one to check out on a lovely stretch of road that has a few other hidden gems. My fav of Cremasco cheese and some hams are certainly the highlight that I will alway be getting. There's also an amazing chocolate and a Pistachio pastry that is light crispy and sweet. And a £1 each it's so worth getting, esp the latter. Always good to support local independent places too and I certainly will with this one.

Apparently, local chefs Nigel Slater and Anna Colquhoun are among their regular customers, although I have never seen them. However, if they do come here to shop, it will probably primarily because they want to support their local greengrocers (as I do) but also because the change of ownership has resulted in an upturn in quality. It is still sometimes a bit of a mixed bag but in the main the vegetables and fruit which are in good condition. The range is also excellent. In addition to the usual fruit and vegetables, plants and cut flowers are also available to purchase and at Christmas, this is a source of Xmas trees and wreaths. However, I have not strayed away from the fruit/vegetables as yet.

Yet, unlike some inexpensive fruit and veg stands.. where you feel like you'd have to scrub the skin off your produce before you'd be convinced it was sanitary enough to eat... Ali's, wonderfully, doesn't feel cheap... there's nothing dingy or unclean about the place... everything is kept tidy and orgnanised and beautifully stacked. The other thing that keeps me coming back here is the shop's proprietor. He is always smiling and courteous - and well, one of those kindly sort of people that you just *want* to buy from... again, try finding someone like that at Tesco's HQ!
