Schmidt's may be a few more dollars then the rest in the area($85 / night) but well worth it, things are clean, well maintained, no musty moldy smell, a great place to come back to after a long day kayaking, mountain biking, beach ect.. The motel is your typical northern Michigan low-slung type building. It's very plain, very brown, very simple and quite comfortable and clean. The guides accurately told us to expect the hex hatch to occur between 10-11 PM. Right around 10:45 when we thought it just wasn't going to happen it did. We were fishing the Pine that day and night. The D-Loop is a small but tidy operation and I will return. Next time maybe I'll land my first brown:).

Ahhh...how easily the most simple plans go awry. In this case, I couldn't tear myself away from off-season Glen Lake and then got trapped here by the weather - it's December and I'm still here, sans appropriate outdoor gear. I did not pack for winter - I packed for fall and now I'm paying for it. We're talking plastic bags over my sneakers just to go outside due to the snow and the pipes freezing in the washing machine after I'd loaded 75% of our clothes in with soap. I'll go ahead and answer that question that is running through your mind even as I type; yes, I AM a complete idiot. What to do? Head into the Sportsman Shop in Glen Arbor. Although quite small, they have a great selection of high quality mens and womens coats, sweaters, shirts, long underwear, socks, foot gear, etc. at very reasonable prices. I've purchased a lovely, well made and much needed pair of boots for myself, some jammies & pants for the fella and we're set to go until the roads are safe to head back to Chicago. Good variety of Woolrich, Columbia, etc. in clothing and sporting gear for fishing and hunting and they even offer chartered fishing trips. Look for significant discounts after Thanksgiving - there are bargains to be had. Very friendly and helpful staff (I went in not knowing the fellas pants size and the incredibly nice saleslady helped me find a pair that fit him perfectly) and open year round to save dumb asses like myself from their ill conceived follies - I highly recommend this incredibly useful store.

I agreed and said I'd just be using it to plink or target shoot. I commented that its small caliber would probably be easy for my wife to shoot as well. At that moment almost gleefully ( not exaggerating) she said "I can't sell you this gun because you're buying it for your wife". I was stunned. I said I wasn't buying it for my wife and said "I felt it was something my wife could handle as it was a small caliber" . She then said " What I heard is you're buying it for your wife". I was so shocked by the rudeness, brusque, way that she responded. I said thank you, grabbed my license and left. I'm 64, have been a FOID card from Illinois for over 30 years. I understand gun laws, and even saw the sign on the counter regarding the illegality of buying a firearm for someone else. Her attitude was unprofessional, irresponsible, and contemptible. What could have easily resulted in a 400. Sale resulted in nothing. When I returned home and told my wife we decided to check Yelp. Low and behold, what did we find? Check out Yelp when you can. Suffice it to say, we, and the dozens of friends and family members we tell will not patronize that store again. As a former carpenter we had a phrase fir someone not quite right in the head "a bubble off". This store should really consider keeping this individual, who was identified by another Yelp commenter, away from the public.

After a little bit of searching, we found that Provisions seems to be the only game in town for…read morerenting cross country ski equipment. Once we found that out however, we were all set. We went to the store, got all fitted by a knowledgeable staff person and we were set to go. Prices were very affordable and the equipment seemed to be of pretty good quality. They had lots of other stuff in stock. If you plan a summer trip and realize that you need another swimsuit or your forgot yours, provisions is a couple of blocks from the lake and will have you in the water in no time. The only reason I deducted a star was because we had a little bit of trouble returning our equipment: we were told to return them on Sunday, however, when we went to the store there was a sign that said they were closed on sundays. They really opened at noon, but we had no idea. They were nice enough to take them back after we left them next door, but it would have been nice if they were a little more clear.
