When we finished our spa day, a lovely member of staff walked us through the many (many!) hallways through to The Swan's restaurant - there is an outside walkway but, as it was raining, they were kind enough to take us this alternative route. We were seated at a nice intimate sofa and table, very relaxed after our massages, and ordered our tea to go alongside the food. The tea arrived fairly quickly with some lovely crockery but there was a huge wait for the food, during which time we felt very neglected. The eventual explanation was that the staff Christmas party was also taking place in an adjoining room - fair for them to have a party, but it shouldn't affect service this much! The food itself was good, with a very tasty warm bakewell tart and meringue swans filled with cream. The scones were also delicious, with both fruit and apple & walnut flavours served. The sandwiches were a let down with very dry bread and seemed to be an afterthought compared to the delicate pastries and cakes. We had a lovely time together but the afternoon tea didn't add much to the experience overall. A bit of a shame.

Desserts included a macaron, a chocolate orange profiterole, an apple crumble tartlet and Christmas cake. All were perfection. Staff were very attentive. Paid parking is adjacent.

He did a fine job waiting on our table but we felt like it was always rushed. We had short rib pie, the sea bass & the snapper & they were all excellent. The birthday brownie was complimentary & a nice touch. Their warm bread was outstanding. They have a nice wine list, although being from the states I wasn't familiar with most of their wines. The atmosphere is just right, not too stuffy but does have class. I'd definitely would go again whenever I'm back visiting.

I make myself laugh. But really, in the villages of England, places are few and far between, and during the holidays even more so. The Brit and I stayed here one Christmas in 2009, and the owner made sure we had a lovely stay as a favour to The Brit's Dad. The hotel is lovely and the restaurant a great place for a good meal. There is a little seating area for you to wait to be seated where the owner will happily greet you and take your drink order. The drinks were a bit slow coming, but we had time to waste. Things go slower in the UK don't they. Kick back and enjoy your libations my friend! I think the owner was quite proud to have us sit in the seating area before we sat down for our meal, as that seemed her focus despite a predominantly empty restaurant only due to the time of year. I enjoyed a proper English Christmas dinner even though we were going to have another one in a day's time (I love parsnips!) and The Brit had a tasty steak. It takes some time, but it was yummy! The morning after Christmas we were the only ones it seemed in the hotel. Our biscuits were really tasty, but the tea not as good. Breakfast was a proper English and perfectly prepared. I loved our room and found it nicely styled and decorated. If I remember correctly, each room is named a different colour, or at least styled in a different colour. We had purple. It really was a nice place and felt luxurious. The price was great and I would definitely stay here again if ever in the area and in need.

All rooms are upstairs and there's no lift, so heavy luggage is a pain in the 500+ year old hallways.

I didn't mind though as I was just going to be in and out. According to my colleagues, a room with a harbour view is definitely worth asking for. My room was very stylish I thought. Unique things that I hadn't seen anywhere else like mosiac style feature wallpaper in a dramatic blue and black pattern, and just nice little touches like a retro style telephone and dotty mugs, and a big rustic wooden bench/desk. There is nothing corporate about this place at all, it is very nicely done. The bathroom was great too - a seperate shower cubicle with an overhead and side on shower, and a big double bath tub - I had a fantastic soak before heading out for the evening. The room had its own temperature control, and the bed was very comfortable - I felt like I was being enveloped in a gigantic soft marshmallow. I can't comment much more than that, as I didn't have dinner or breakfast there, and didn't use the bar. I'd like to come back to the Salthouse though - when away from home through work, staying here feels like a real treat.

A little walk from the center but since be city is not big and the walk is nice (along the harbor) it is no problem. Good breakfast in the morning too. Dont Forget to ask for a room with a view on the harbor. Nothing says "good morning " better than the seagulls waking you up and the view on the boats. With a room in a corner of the building the view gets even wider :) They have a free parking so let your car there and enjoy an healthy walk. Will stay there no doubt if I ever go back to city.

When I was last there, a large group of Napoleonic war re-enactment enthusiasts were holding their AGM in the restaurant. Zut alors!
