The Compassionate Friends is a nonprofit which offers support to bereaved families suffering…read moreintense pain, hopeless and isolation when a child at any age dies. TCF's mission is to "provide comfort, hope and support" to every family experiencing the death of a son or daughter, sibling or grandchild. There are 600 chapters across the country, the Atlanta chapters are in Lawrenceville, Marietta, Tucker, Duluth and Sandy Springs. Each chapter meets once a month on different days so you can attend as many as needed. There's an online newsletter and several active Facebook groups. So if you need support in the middle of the night, chances are someone else is also awake and available to chat. TCF is a group that no-one wants to belong to because you've experienced heartbreak and unspeakable tragedy. But there are people who understand because they've been there. There are no counselors, only those speaking from their own experience. It's free and even though the meetings are held at a church, it's not religious based. The Tucker chapter is the only one with a separate sibling group but siblings are welcome at any chapter meeting. When you come to your first meeting, you may see a table decorated with pictures and mementos. That means someone is celebrating their child's birthday or "angelversary." There may be a table with their sibling or grand-childs favorite dessert on it to share. You might see members wearing photo buttons with their loved one on it, provided by TCF too. A name tag might say 'Tina's sister' instead of her own name. You stand in a circle holding hands and if you are able, say why you are there. You're told that everything is confidential and that you aren't there to give advice but to share what works for you. Then, you are split up into small groups to share, cry or be silent and comforted. Because the first group can be immensely hard, you're encouraged to visit at least three times. There is a lending library with helpful resources on grief and people often make bookmarks or gifts for holidays, they may give a rose or send a card on your loved ones birthday. There is a candle light vigil in December. There is an amazing annual convention every year that is reasonably priced. An Amazon Smile page allows you to choose TCF Atlanta as your charity so a percentage of the proceeds will go there. As a nonprofit, it's entirely donation based and it's a lifeline to families in need. In short, TCF offers no judgement for grieving families, only comfort, love and support. So the big question, what is Kate's Club? It's THE place to know for youth and adults with kids grieving the loss of a parent, guardian or sibling. Through conversation, arts & crafts and everything in between they offer free help for school aged kids to have safe place to vent. As someone who has experienced the million & 1 ways people want to help you, but just don't know how to relate I can tell you this organization can be life changing. Your child can have a place where those in their age group are relating and equally figuring out what's next for them. Grief is something that can go away and reappear over time. The kids are all school aged 5-17, essentially some have been going for years and some have lost someone as recent as the month they enroll. It's one of a kind and holds a place in many hearts in the community.

I decided to visit their office in person to meet with someone and hopefully get detailed information about how to join. Their office isn't very welcoming and doesn't seem to lend itself to an area that would facilitate marketing opportunities. Their new location is in a high-rise near Northlake Mall and it's down a dead end road by the new public safety complex. Once you figure out how to park, walk to the building, and then make your way up the elevator it turns into a guessing game as to which suite to enter. I found it and walked in to a quiet office without a receptionist. I waited a few minutes and then walked a little further to find someone at desk behind a wall. I'll save the boring details... let's just say that I wasn't impressed. They have several events coming up this month and their directory is pretty helpful. I guess time will tell if this turns into a fruitful relationship. Hopefully the members are more interested in making new connections than the people working in their office.

When your shift is over, take a look around and shop. Pricing of the items is great. I found a pair of shoes, puzzles for my brother, games, and few other small things. I plan to revisit again as both volunteer and shopper.

I have been here several times both for school credit and for interest. It was funny how the first time I went here, it was shortly before I started nursing school and I was exposed to so many different types of medical equipment and I was thinking "I am going to be working with all these things?" Years later, I can quickly tell the difference between different types of equipment, or at least sometimes I can give a basic category. The staff here is awesome and I love the way they are set up online. I have always left here feeling like I contributed to a global movement and it helps that I work in healthcare. My only complaint once was that after emailing the volunteer coordinator about a potential friend joining, they said they were "past the limit" when many people didn't show up that day and from my experiences with planning volunteer events, 100% of the people who sign up never come. Also, I think they can do a little better job of orienting new people. Even after having volunteered here a couple of times, there were days where I had no direction and was confused as to what I was suppose to be doing and did extra work for 20 minutes before I realized what I was suppose to be doing. I could have used those 20 minutes for productivity.

Medshare is a non profit humanitarian aid organization. I volunteered with a bunch of coworkers on…read moreour annual day of service. This was my third year. I believe the work they do is phenomenal. Medshare collects and distributes medical supplies and biomedical equipment and training to underserved communities in need around the world; 97 countries to date. It's hard to critique such a place. They are literally saving lives! As a volunteer who was on the afternoon shift (1pm-4pm), there was significant time wasted and not used to actually pack supplies. They told our group to arrive 15 minutes early before the shift started, which we did. However, orientation didn't start until 1:15. They showed a 5 minute video explaining what they do and who they help. Then introductions of the staff and a tour of the large facility. Not sure exactly how long that took but easily 30 minutes. For us repeat volunteers not time well spent. Then around 3:30pm the staff told us to finish our final boxes and clean up our area. After a brief wrap up speech and tally of boxes packed for our shift, we were out the door at 3:50pm. We probably got 90 minutes of hands on work. Would love to do more.
