While the variety isn't huge, you can definitely find some merch from shows you love -- plushies, pillows, or figurines. My friends and I (3 of us) were looking around in the shop; we thought it was nice and my friends were looking into buying but I wasn't feeling it, so I was just browsing. I said to my friends "i'm not here to buy anything" and the owner said to me "so you're jobless and taking up space in my shop, using my air conditioning?" absolutely out of the blue. I thought he was joking around, but he was entirely serious. I told him off, and my friends and I left without buying anything; but after a few seconds, the owner started chasing us down the street. We are three girls, and this man was chasing us. Terrifying. Do not shop here please. Read the reviews about him checking out minors, and he has figures of sexualized anime minors in his store. This place has a wide selection of manga and light novels from the current English publishers (VIZ, Yen Press, etc.), and they also have a nice variety of figurines and DVDs. There aren't any Japanese native books, but they do have a selection of books in Mandarin Chinese. All of their books are either factory sealed or plastic wrapped in-house. They also have a section dedicated to hentai. The books/DVDs are along the wall near the floor, so I wouldn't recommend bringing small children here. They advertise everywhere that the light novels are 20% off, and that some of the manga is BOGO, but the cashier didn't take off the discount. They also didn't provide a receipt, so I didn't realize they charged retail price until I added up the prices afterwards. The college kids there were helpful and knowledgeable. I would definitely come back, but I would confirm the discounts at checkout. read more

The short asian pudgy bald guy was rude. It wasn't a castle, more like a basement turned into a less-than-comical store. Selection and organization was arbitrary. The figurines were basically overpriced alibaba taobao products that you could get online for a significant fraction. You're not allowed to touch anything, let alone look at a product for too long. The staff there are extremely helpful and possibly the funniest group of people to talk to when you need questions. They take precautions and masks are always on. I've been to this store many times and all I say is that it's a great store to go too. The owner is really nice and does not rush me when I spend my time too long at the store. The owner's wife is also nice and the other employees are nice. They have a lot of manga and merchandise selections. They also sell cards such as Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! And if you're hungry, there's Japanese snacks like Pocky and Mochi. Overall, the store is clean and sanitary. If I could rate the store more than 5, I'd definitely do it. Came here for a Yugioh sneak peek once. I came on about 30 minutes after the sneak peek started. Owner tells me that they don't have any more packs, 'sorry.' Mind you that the store was dead empty. This one shady guy comes up to me from ear the counter with 2 FULL BINDERS WITH NEARLY EVERYCARD from that set (Breakers of Shadow.) A long, long time ago... in a neighborhood far far away there used to be Anime Castle. It was a warehouse that was filled to the max for the average Otaku. Tons of anime and manga goodies. I bought some shirts, bags, and manga. The Ramune was overpriced, seriously $2.50 for a Ramune. I can get it for .99 cents by the asian grocery nearby me o.O They claim it's because they're a warehouse and they sell stuff online. Right.... Now, they moved to a new location in Main Street which is wonderful!!! Yay, saves me the trip. The good thing about Anime Castle is they never or hardly sell anything at retail price esp. manga!!! Plus they offer discount coupons every once and while through their email subscription lists but they're very stingy. It's always 5% off. It NEVER goes any higher. I laugh when it's christmas and they send a coupon for Christmas and sale savings (You'll save alot they say). It's 5% savings LOL. Which I guess I'm not offended since they do offer about already a 5-10% discount on manga. They have a pretty good selection although the store is pretty small compared to their warehouse before but you'll usually find what you're looking for. Previously and now, they have people watch you while shopping and it can very annoying. I went with my mom and she was annoyed that the same guy was following us everywhere!!! o.O Seriously!! I'm just with my mom, leave me alone. I can't make decisions when you hover above me. Another con, is that they sell some bootleg stuff. I bought a CD online before thinking it's the real thing and it was a little cheaper than some stores but it still cost me a lot and they didn't even say it's bootleg or anything. I read online that Anime News Network or some other website told Anime Castle that if they don't stop selling bootlegs, it would not be advertised on their website. They stopped for a little bit but they went back to bootlegs and I don't know what is the deal now. So be careful!! Most of their Anime OSTs are bootleg. Some of us don't mind (I didn't really mind I suppose) but it's just annoying to know. Their messenger bags and book bags are soooo cute!! Depending on which one you're going to buy and for what reason and how long you want to keep it, be wise about buying the right one for you. My brother and sister have purchased their school bags here and both of them ripped in one semester/half a school year. Both of them had binders, maybe a textbook or two and whatnot but it still ripped. I bought a small one but the material is superstrong. I still use it for 5+ years now. It's mythwear!! :D Also, all or most of the manga is covered in a plastic cover. So you can't read it in the store. They purposely did that so that you won't read them. FYI: This place is not a castle. Having said that, it's a small boutique shop located downstairs on a side street in Flushing off Northern Blvd. I'm in no way shape or form into anime so I'll be reviewing this shop as a third party observer. For a small place, they have a very large selection of anime books, videos, you name it. Not so much of a selection of collectibles but if you're looking for books and videos then chances are you'll find what you're looking for here. My niece did. The staff seemed to know everything about everything which is a plus. My complaint is the prices. Having been to the Akihabara neighborhood in Tokyo, I wasn't expecting prices for the same stuff there to be quadruple the price. I never thought I'd ever say something's cheaper in Japan. Let's just say I saw the exact same anime figure I bought my niece in Tokyo for $30 was $120 here! Yikes! Even a box of pocky is $3 and I can get it for $1.99 at H Mart. Way too over priced. If you're into anime and your parents have deeeeeeeep pockets then you'll love this shop. For me, well, it was more of a pain in the wallet. read more

It's the only store in the hood with such a wide selection in English-translated manga's, DVDs, art books, magazines (Shonen Jump & etc), apparel, accessories, and toys ^_^ *note: I've been looking for some old school manga's, and they actually carry it! This place is PARADISE. I actually went looking for a manga that I was sure they wouldnt have but they had it! They were extremly helpful and found everything I needed. The walls were completly covered in manga of all kinds and in the back they had anime DVDs, apparel, and imported CD's. Everything was cheaper than expected. We stayed for a half hour more than we needed to just talking to the owner of the shop- he was very cool and talkative. I've been coming here for years. The staff of Anime Castle is very friendly and helpful. The prices are lower than what you'd pay on Amazon or Barnes & Noble and the selection is HUGE. I can't walk into the joint without seeing several things that I mentally earmark as future purchases. There's also a frequent customer system - you can acrue points for shopping. Pros: Good manga selection, price fair. Plastic wrapped so the manga aren't faded, but you can't check them out (good on them). Fair anime selection from the looks of it. Not that big though and it's mostly popular stuff, but that's expected. Online store says they stock some rarer goods too, but the collection is so far from eye view in store you can't really pick out the good stuff. Vanguard section is good, but I don't play. They have events and stuff for it and a lot of booster packs and decks. The front of the shop has newer, official merchandise. Their selection changes and is pretty updated. Back, not so much. Cons: Service isn't that bomb. I got recommended Sailor Moon when I wanted brolic men fighting, mannnn-- that's some judging. Staff is sometimes quiet or too pushy. Man I know my anime, dont be up on my grill if I ain't buying either. So hold up. But they are nice and helpful at other times too. Also they follow you, but thats understandable cause the stuff seems easily jackable even if you have to put bags near the front. Verdict: their tastes suck but thats objective. Overpriced food. Go to the chinese supermarket nearby. It's actually like a block down. Outdated magazine section and merchandise stuck in early 2000s. Some of the goods seem a little faded, no joke. They're not official too, especially the keychains, but I don't mind doujin (fan) goods, just wish their stock got updated. Went after 2 years and it was the same. Mostly mainstream anime.... from like 2007. And popular new anime goods are featured towards the front of the shop. The figures are all moe chicks. Aka girls made to look cute and appealing to fans who expect the same character archetype in every other series. The bags and shirts are your standard popular anime goods that aren't standout and are just label placement. Video game selection is lackluster and priced too high. Neutral: Atmosphere. It's usually quiet but there are people playing card games sometimes. That's cool, but cramping. It's kind of small but it's a warehouse like place, no frills. basically: As someone who's pretty into anime, Anime Castle didn't really strike a chord. Taste differences. But for people who are into your standard fare of whatever's popular in the last few seasons, or people who are into popular cute girl stuff, it's a shop worth a visit. Within walking distance of my Parsons Boulevard apartment, across from Flushing High School, and hidden within a thicket of tiny shops lies the Anime Castle. The name is a bit of a misnomer, as the square footage is more in line with a two-bedroom apartment than sprawling medieval edifice. However, this tiny outpost would likely look like a towering citadel for the average anime fan weary of traveling to Manhattan. I've got to say, I'm a huge sucker for the small-time shops swimming against the current of soulless big-box outlets. Each one is different, has their own identity, and at the end of the day you know where your money is going. The Anime Castle is a modest affair. There's a place for manga, a place for anime, a place for statues, and also apparel. A few tables are set up for card games and a smattering of junk food is available to keep the Yu-Gi-Oh! games lively. Straight forward. No Frills. Efficient. I was greeted when I entered the store (there's a buzzer to let you in) and I was asked if I needed help. It's a small gesture, but you'd be amazed how few retailers emphasize simple customer service. Keep in mind, I've only been there once and these are my first impressions. I went in, browsed the store, asked for a title, got it, paid, and went. Can't argue with those results, however. The selection of anime seemed pretty serviceable, the action figures were a little weedy. The extras didn't grab my attention much, so I can't comment on that. But, the selection of manga was impressive, to put it mildly. Books upon books upon books. All sorted neatly and presented with care. All of them seemed to still be shrink wrapped (which does hinder leafing through them, but keeps bratty pre-teens from dosing them with their bubble tea). An added note: the manga is sorted by publisher so between that and the plastic it helps to know what you have in mind before you stop in. Anime Castle is a good model for a store of this type. It gives you everything you'd expect, but it has that one feature that really stands out. If you're from the area or happen to be in the area, by all means, stop in. It probably wouldn't draw in you from all the way across the city (unless manga is your poison), but it's nice to see that there are alternatives to braving the 7 Line into the island for some boutique stores. read more

I've been in love with this place ever since my friend showed me it during my freshman year of high school. I'm currently a sophomore in college and I still come here on multiple occasions during the year. This place is just manga heaven. If you're looking for a manga, they probably have it somewhere. And if it isn't there, you could ask one of the staff members to order it for you and then you can pick it up a few days later (when they call you). The staff here is so friendly and nice and funny, haha. They're great people to talk to, so be sure to have a conversation with them if you have the time. The only thing that annoys me about this place is that you have to leave your bag near the entrance, which I'm totally fine with. But then one of the staff members follow you around if you go towards the back area where all the t-shirts and bags are. I don't really understand why they do this. I mean, I've already left my bag at the entrance... how else am I gonna steal something? Hide it under my jacket? It just makes me uncomfortable when there's someone following me around when I'm looking at stuff. I need my own personal space! Other than that, this place is great. I've recently stumbled upon this little gem of a store while trying to buy my manga from not a chain store such as Barnes and Nobles. Just would much rather spend my money to be spent in the "little guys" now that I live in NYC & manga is more popular here then it was back home. I must say the selection of manga is HUGE compared to what I am used to seeing. It's awesome! So many books I saw I just wanted to purchase since I haven't even heard of them before. However, I guess my own imagination before actually stepping foot in anime castle led me to believe it may have more collectibles/figurines/etc but it was mainly books, DVD's, and trading cards. Introduction: Anime Castle just like any other anime/manga retail sells anime/manga related goods Price: Just like any other stores Anime Castle has to make a living from profits, everything and everything is close to MSRP (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price) What next? Anime Castle want to buy mangas/DVDs from you at a low low cost of $1/$3 respectively which is a terrible rate in which they sell it at 70% profit. Lady's and gentleman your better off selling your mangas/DVD's elsewhere like eBay for example. Anime Castle never ever have sales they just want your money, other anime retailers such as Rightstuf have sales everyday they are a respected company. Anime Castle have tournaments for games such SSBB (Super Smash Bros. Brawl) but you know whats the funny thing? You pay a fee and if you win you get one of there overstocked item that they can't sell and they reep all the profits for themselves. Observably still trying to suck out more money from you. Website: The site itself is misleading the item says "Free Shipping" yet I see a little "*" they says "Orders $85 or more and qualify for free shipping" This is a basic of trying to get money from you thinking that you would get free shipping but your not. Very terrible at marketing, I mean come on I see new sites do this like of trick but this site too? You might as well just mark everything as free shipping then. Verdict: Stay far alway! You might want to stay away from this place everything is pricey compare to anime/manga retailers. Anime Castle just wants your money in the end and only your money and misleading website. There might be some good points to Anime Castle but I have not found any yet! Very rude store owner...curses like a sailor once you point out an error with store credit. My "payment" for an event was still put into a prize pool that I didn't attend after I asked to remove me from said event. Basically scapegoated and cursed at his employees and event organizers that they don't do their job correct and to fix this problem so he doesn't have to deal with this "angry customer", all right in front of me---the customer. My money was just gone, in purgatory, and he won't honor the mistake to reverse it and give me my money back. I really hoped for a better outcome but nope, he takes no responsibility even though all the money goes to him. not too shabby! it was a delight to see this store while exploring Flushing with my brother. we walked in to find out that the store was JUST opening. they let us come in with no wait and turned on all the lights. that was sweet of them! the store is not humongous. however, it housed a lot of good retail products like bobble heads, key chains, plush toys, collectables and t-shirts. rare and hard to find t-shirts! my brother found a Dragonball shirt; a replica of the ones you see the characters wearing at the training camp in the manga. too bad they didn't have more sizes! we browsed for a while- bought a few items and walked out impressed with our finds! i scored a Domokun plush dice set for my collection and brother purchased a few novelty gifts. read more
