I added this to our places to check out while in NYC as it was described as a used bookstore. After actually visiting I think the first floor is more worth browsing. The second floor was packed full of books and if you spent a long time browsing I bet you could find some great deals. Looking through some of the book prices though looked to be close to the original price for a used copy. I get they must have a large bill for the space but why buy used at similar rate to new. Also like I said I think the first floor was more worthwhile I will add a disclaimer to that and say the prices were once again the biggest issue. I specifically noticed the video game section that even some older not that special/unique PlayStation games were overpriced. Even when factoring in physical versus digital and what not. I think for some of the games you would be better off finding the nearest GameStop. The most interesting part was some of the retro games/rarer games and then some of the collectibles to see and admire. Again though prices made it no question but to skip. I suspect they paid most people nothing to turn around and charge these crazy inflated prices. If you visit to browse it's great but if you want deals be ready to really search around.

Bookoff is a used bookstore chain from Japan. I have walked by this store in the past, but only recently went inside. The size of this place was far larger than I imagined and it is three floors in total. They have a huge collection of books of all subjects that is just as extensive as Barnes & Noble, but cheaper. However, they offer way more than just used books. This place is in fact a must visit for any anime fan. The place is well stocked with a huge collection of manga, action figures and collectibles. Secondly, they also offer a massive amount of retro items you cannot find elsewhere: Video games (NES, Super Famicom, Gameboy, N64, XBox, PS1, PS2, PS3, everything up until current generation systems), CDs, DVDs, Blue Rays, and more! There is even a bargain area in the basement where they sell movies for as low as $2.00. If you are in your 30s and 40s and up, you will feel like you've walked into a place from 20 years ago.

Really glad to have found this store - it's a great place to browse through when I'm in the area and I've got some spare time. There are three levels packed with used books and music and memorabilia. The basement has CDs and DVDs, the main floor has anime and manga, and the second floor is all books. There's an elevator in the store if you can't do stairs. The store is very well organized and surprisingly neat for the amount of merchandise. The employees are always very friendly and helpful. They both buy and sell, but I've only ever bought. I usually leave with one or two books at a great price. I'm not sure how they decide on prices, but there seems to be a wide range. For example, on my last visit I purchased two hardcovers in similar condition, one marked at $5 and the other marked at $12. And a few months ago I found a hardcover book I was interested in marked at $30, which didn't seem worth it for a used copy. On my more recent visit last week the book was still there, but marked down to $19. Still more then I want to pay, but I'm wondering if I check again in a couple more months if it will still be on the shelf and marked down even further. Definitely a great place to browse through though, and you're likely to leave with a few finds.

Friday 2pm Passed right by Bookoff and didn't realize it had used books. From the store front it looks like a gaming store and why we didn't look up and see the store name...I don't know. It was raining. Looking on Yelp and the address led us right here, not far from our hotel. When we're out of town we always enjoy finding used book stores and also, the book I brought to read on vacation is almost to the end. My husband enjoyed looking downstairs at the action figures and games. I went right upstairs to the red $1 signs. It didn't take long for me to find a book. So many great books! Headed downstairs to the kids books. Many of them not $1. *sigh I found a super cute hardback book for $5.50. 4/5 stars because bags are 30 cents and not many kids books for $1

What a great find! It's definitely a spot for needs (with love)! Actually, there's something for everyone. My husband was taken aback by the nendoroid collection, and my daughter picked out four books. The young adult section is on point, too. Highly recommended!

I've been coming here since Book-Off opened and spending good money here but after today you lost a loyal customer!! I bought a few DVDs and included this one in the picture. As the worker was ringing me she picked up the Avenger DVD and ripped off the price tag that was originally on the DVD!! With a big smile on her face! And I found all of those DVDs in the $2.50 clearance department and charging me $11.50 for the dvd!! Like trying to say I'm stealing but switching the price tags without saying it and charging me $10 more dollars with their mistakes! After I said something the manager took the worker's side

Ask the Community - Bookoff - New York

Do the store workers come to your location to pick up large collections if you wish to sell books that you own?

No. You have to bring it yourself and I doubt they buy collections. Books especially. The Strand is the best place to go for book collections.

Do you need an id to sell books?

Yes they require you to have a government issued id to sell anything.

Does this book off sell vinyl records?

    Call the store

Are the manga books used or are they brand new?

    Mix of both.

    Do they buy books?

Yes, but for chump change from what I hear from other reviewers

Do they have my hero academia pop figures? I have a nearly completed collection and all I need is tenya Iida,Ochaco Uraraka and shouta aizawa

Uraraka is best girl, but the pop selection is generally random since they're often traded in from people, so the stock isn't consistent.

    Do you sell used magazines?

    They do not sell magazines.

However; the reason why I'm writing this update is because there are some changes at the store. Firstly; the large "Information Desk" at the rear of the first floor is no longer there. Instead, there's a small one on the right side of that floor (and it's almost hidden). Secondly; the huge first floor display of beautiful photo books of NYC and environs is now much smaller (although it seemed like there were more of them on the lower level than previously). There's also another change; the restrooms are now only accessible with a code, and a code can only be obtained via a receipt - so if you don't buy anything, you can't use the restroom (I ordered some books online later, since I didn't want to lug them home from the store). Further; employees don't have access to a bathroom code (obviously they have some other way to access the restrooms). I was there for a few hours - and if it wasn't for the fact that I had a dental appointment nearby afterwards, it would have been problematic. Having said that, I do realize that the restroom situation is an issue; at the Union Square store in particular, there used to be a big problem with homeless people and undoubtedly a corporate decision was made. I'm still keeping a five-star rating because of the employees and because the store has a great selection.

Located right across from Bryant Park, it's almost impossible to walk by without going in. It's usually crowded, but that's part of its charm. The store has three levels, each worth exploring. The main floor features an impressive selection of books, including bestsellers and new releases right as you walk in. The lower level is where you'll find collectibles, specialty pens, beautiful notebooks and stationery, unique gifts, even more books, and plenty of cute items that will tempt you to spend more than you planned. The book selection is excellent, although I have to admit the prices can be a bit on the higher side. The staff are always friendly, and checkout is surprisingly quick, so don't let the long lines discourage you. One thing to note: drinks aren't allowed inside, so you'll need to leave them with security before entering. I walked into a store that is essentially one large room, and the density of product on display meant navigating it during a busy period required some patience, but the selection within that compact space was broader than the size suggested. The Korean literature section covers both Korean language and English language editions across a range of genres, which makes it genuinely useful for anyone studying the language or looking for titles that are difficult to find at general bookstores in the city. I saw children's books in Korean, well stocked. The K pop side of the store covers albums, photocards, posters, keychains, stickers, and merchandise across a wide range of artists, with BTS having a particularly strong presence historically alongside newer groups. Pricing runs higher than what I would pay ordering online or finding the same items at a larger retailer, which is the standard trade off for a specialty shop in Manhattan. Album prices in particular can be steep, though sale events bring them down to more competitive territory. Individual accessory items like stickers and bookmarks are priced at a premium relative to their size, so going in with a sense of what I am willing to spend helps avoid sticker shock at the register. The store is a reliable stop for anyone looking for Korean books or K pop merchandise in a physical retail setting in New York, with the caveat that the pricing and the crowd level are both factors worth knowing about before I go.
