Anna's is right at the corner of Chinatown, at the top of the hill, on Bronson and Somerset next to the gas station. It's easy to miss, but once you find it, you won't forget. My mom and I have been getting our hair cut here for years and years. Even after we moved to a different city, every time we visited Ottawa we would get our hair cut at Anna's. She remembers us every time! I am not kidding you when I say they give THE BEST head massages EVER. The massage lasts so much longer than at other hair salons and it's so relaxing that you're practically incapacitated after it! Their hair is also great - you can look through their many hairstyle books or bring in a picture of your own and they'll try to match it with your face shape, features, age, and personal style. I made a reservation at Anna's because I was tired of paying so much money for just a women's haircut, and because I wanted to sport the popular "see through bangs" again. This style is especially popular in Asia so I trusted an Asian hairstylist to cut them. I gave him specific instructions on how I wanted them to be cut and showed some pictures too. He seemed like he understood well until he started chopping off my hair all the way above my eyebrows even though I had told him to only cut it to one centimetre below my eyebrows. I told him that he had cut them too short but then he just started saying that it looked better this way and that this was what the style in the pictures I showed him looked like, etc... I was extremely upset at that point, but since nothing much could be done about it, I held it in. After that I got my ends trimmed off. I would have rated the experience one star because of the horribly short bangs, but they were quite polite so I'll give them a star for that. I will not be returning. read more

In retrospect, I'm updating my review to one star. I think I originally wanted to convince myself that I didn't blow $40 (plus tip... ugh) on a crappy cut. But I did. And I'm still a little sore about is 6 months later. I would expect a quick "in and out" from a discount place, but at $40 for a dry cut I expect a decent cut. I re-read the yelp reviews and was a little surprised that my experience seemed so inconsistent with the rest. After reading the two reviews I decided to try it. I am just sick and tired of paying over 100$ for a trendy and being disappointed with the results. I hesitated before writing this review because I don't want my haircut spot to be invaded but Anna deserves the praise. A woman's haircut is 35$ tax included and it is worth every cent of it. I asked for a short, funky cut and got exactly what I wanted. Bring in pictures and she'll take the time to understand what you want and advise you with what works and what doesn't. She's been cutting hair for 35 years she told me. She doesn't look a day over 40?! Not fair but anyway off topic... Sure beats the overpriced downtown salons in Ottawa or NYC where I got bad haircuts for three or four times the price. Best haircut secret spot in town for cheap! Now I'm worried that y'all show up there and then prices will go up... Worth the risk, she deserves the praise. read more

Unfortunately I had a similar experience a few years ago. My hair ended up yellow like a crayon and just terrible (which, ironically, was what I had gone to get fixed in the first place). She actually seemed angry when I came back for her to try to fix the mess but even then I left and had to go to another salon to fix (Salon 130...they were great). read more

I went there over the weekend for the second time, not only did the hairdresser butcher my hair, I find that they are to expensive, NOW that I have short hair, to short, I will never go there again. She cut it far to short.. would never recommend this place, had a friend go a couple of times, she hates the way they cut her hair also, she stopped going last year. read more

I was in the area for lunch, while waiting for the restaurant to open for lunch I decided to have a hair cut close by. There are two salons side by side, I thought with the competition, it could not be too bad, but was I wrong. I asked for just a cut, the hair dresser, does not even prep my hair, such as spray it wet or cut portion by portion. She just cut my hair dry and chopping it. This is the worst hair cut I ever had, the total come to $33 after tax, the posted price is only $25. She is incompetent as a hair dresser as well as being dishonest on overcharging. read more

I walked in on a Sunday and I can't say enough good things about Anna Hair Designs! The price is fair (it was around $35-40 with tax and tip) and they get you in and out. I was in a bit of a rush so I decided to skip the wash and go straight for a hair cut. They dry cut my hair and they did a great job! Anna is amazing. I am naturally shy and also apprehensive with having my hair done.....but this is the second time I have visited her. She makes me feel comfortable, and doesn't judge me if its been a tad long since my last cut. She has a knack for cutting hair, as well as color......this time around she did 3 colors in my hair as well as a cut, wash and style and it was 101$!!!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable. After the great reviews, I expected to have a good experience, but I was horribly disappointed. I walked in and was seated immediately, which was the only good part about the visit. The haircut itself felt rushed, as it was only around 15-20 minutes (I was getting layers for the first time). I was shown about an inch that they were going to cut off, but proceeded to have almost four inches cut off! Worst of all, the cut was incredibly uneven at the bottom, with chunks next to each other all at different lengths! This could be because I didn't have Anna herself, I had some other man, but I would have expected such a well-reviewed salon to have hired better stylists. I had to pay $45+ more dollars just to get the bottom more or less even, let alone attempting to get layers. I will not be going back. read more

Made an account just to say that I love this place, and Anna is a total doll. I'm Asian and have typically straight, thick hair, and no trendy Avena-style salons have ever been able to cut it quite right, but I went to Anna's and she gave me the dopest cut. Super sweet lady too, very chatty and the environment of the salon is very homey and fun. Regulars popped by for chats and when they spoke to Anna in Mandarin (which I don't speak) she would translate the fun parts for me! She also did this wizard-like trick with a round brush and a blow dryer that I have been trying and failing to replicate ever since. Highly recommend! read more

I read good reviews about this place for the cut and its price, so I've decided to give it a try. I was charged $50(not tax inclu) for a trim and wash. Which doesn't make sense since the listed price was $23? Not worth the price for the haircut in my opinion because I've always gotten professional haircuts for the same price. I asked for layers and Anna used shearing scissors to achieve the "layer" cut style instead of using scissors to manually trim the edge to achieve the sharp look. The result was terrible as I have straight Asian hair and the effect of the shearing scissors was obvious. As time goes by, my haircut just looks even more potato. never again. read more

I went here based in the reviews I read...big mistake! I got the worst haircut I've had in a looooong time. I went in and asked for an "asian" ish haircut, I knew what I wanted and showed the lady a picture. We agreed that shorter layers would add volume and shape to the cut. I had long hair with some layers already cut and stressed that I didn't want the layers too short, obviously, because it would look like a mullet. She proceeded to butcher my hair, it's full on business party, bowl-ish around the front and too short to blend in with the longer back. Not only did she do a horrible job of cutting my hair, when another customer came in, she rushed to finish my cut and passed my off to the "assistant". I used the term loosely, chickee had obviously no experience at all. What was supposed to be loose wavy, bouncy curls was tight and waaaay too curled (not at all like the picture I showed her!) I left looking like a poodle and rushed home nearly in tears. It was awful!! I would never go back and if you value your hair, don't go etiher!! read more

Tried to make an appointment and get a price. Very difficult. When I told them my hair was short and blonde they went further and asked me my original color. When I told them it was blonde they said I had to come to the salon in order for them to give me a price. I don't think so! All I wanted was color and a cut and they were not able to give me a price. I recently moved to Ottawa and was looking for a reasonably priced stylist. I decided to go to Anna's Hari Design after reading all the glowing reviews . Unfortunately my experience there proved to be horrible. I showed Anna pictures of the style I wanted, I needed a few more long, graduated layers added to my shoulder lenght hair which I had been growing for a while. To give my hair more volume and movement , Anna texturized my whole head and took about 4 inches off!!! I told Anna I liked my hair to be "wash and wear" but she proceeded to blowdry and style my hair ; after her "styling" I ended up looking like a diva from an 80"s night time soap opera (Dynasty). I paid forty five dollars to have my hair butchered!! It has been three months and I visited my hiardresser in Toronto yesterday. She was mortified to see all the split ends and she told me that styling my hair would have been problematic as texturizing too much results in split ends and flyaways. I had to have a few inches cut just to get rid of the damage caused by my visit to Annna's. It will take at least another three months to get my hair back to its original length. I don't believe it is reasonable to pay forty- five dollars for a hair cut especially to an obviously unskilled person who ruined my hair. !! read more

One of the worst haircuts I've ever received, unfortunately. They were 30 mins late taking me and then rushed through my hair appointment leaving me with something that looks like I did it myself without much training. Now I want to get it recut at another place and spend the money so it looks good. Unfortunately, there's not much left to cut off after he took off way more than the two inches I wanted because he overly layered everything. When he layered it, he did not integrate the layers so the haircut looks unconnected. I have basically no hair left and it's really ugly and uneven. I left the store to put myself out of pain. (I also had the guy; not sure if the owner, Anna is better. He definitely gave me no advice about what would look good and took very little care in the outcome.) read more

This was the worst experience of my life, I almost cried in the hair salon and when I got home I couldn't hold it back anymore I started bawling when my roommate said "what happened?" I went in wanting a trim and my hair dyed blonde. I was there for 5 hours and came out with yellow hair. They dyed it yellow and when I asked them to fix it because it was too yellow they did some highlights and lowlights and it looked exactly the same. Not only did I almost start crying when I saw my hair, I was almost brought to tears by Anna ripping at my hair while doing the dye job, and ripping at my hair while washing it. She is not gentle with hair. Also I was left for 25 minutes with my head hanging in the sink because she went to do another customer. I left with yellow hair, a sore neck and a headache.
