A friend raved about Anna, so I went. It was overpriced, but I found a cute shirt in the sale bin. The first time I wore it, it disintegrated within a couple of hours. And I only went to MoMA... it's not like I was running with the bulls! What's worse is I went to return it -- within a week of buying it. The salesperson there was rude and refused the return. Can you imagine? So I left it there along with a message for the owner -- who never called. Thank god for American Express. They credited the amount based on a purchase protection program. I've had a crush on this boutique for many years. Seriously. My heart palpitates when I skip down Avenue A and round 3rd street to shop. Designer Kathy Kemp's dresses are delightfully unique, adorable and so unlike the cookie cutter styles I see elsewhere. She knows exactly how to make a woman feel sexy -- and smart -- with her cuts, colors and fabrics. Her designs remind me of origami and I always get compliments from women -- and guys -- when I wear one of her pieces. My only complaint? Love love love! Kathy Kemp's pieces are so flattering and versatile! You get multiple looks out by wearing them backwards, changing the way you belt it, and sometimes even wearing it upside down. A NYC friend turned me onto Anna and I am hooked. The Designer Kathy Kemp selects delicious fabrics and cuts them into sexy, comfy and versatile pieces. What I really like about the place is that the designs are unique and current yet not trendy. I always get compliments when I wear my pieces. i woud go more often but I live in SF! RUN AWAY from this store ~ find another shop that has good customer service and satisfaction....this one has major problems!!! I returned a top I had purchased in which the sleeves were uneven, 3/4 on one side full length on the other. After receiving another one, I found the top had the exact same (uneven sleeves) issue. I sent the second top back immediately just like I had the 1st and at that point asked for a full refund on the purchase. I purchased this top at a friends home in Los Angeles, there were no "Return policy" signs posted nor did the friend selling the top say there were "no refunds"....after returning the top and requesting a full refund, the store owner, Kathy Kemp said the return policy of the store is to issue a "store credit" and refused to refund the purchase. She also said she hadn't had "any previous issues with this top" as many people had purchased it. In my opinion, this seems like a simple remedy; that being if Kathy doesn't have "any issues selling the top", then why didn't she simply sell the one (which I had never worn and sent back immediately) take her profit and simply refund my purchase? This seems like a perfectly acceptable and viable resolution wherein all parties are happy but Kathy refused! Furthermore, Kathy Kemp knows I live in Los Angeles and purchased the top at a friends private home. I found that after requesting a refund, the person representing and selling the clothing line WAS NOT AN EMPLOYEE of the store! After contacting this individual, she conveyed that she "didn't work for Kathy or the Anna store and could not help in any way and felt awful and was embarrassed that Kathy, her friend and owner of Anna had refused to refund my purchase". So...no "refund policy" at the purchase location was disclosed and the person who sold the top wasn't even an employee of Kathy Kemp...what kind of scam business is this person running? This is absolutely the WORST customer service I've ever experienced from an establishment. I cannot recommend shopping and spending your hard earned dollars with this store ~ my experience with the owner, Kathy Kemp, is she exhibits unscrupulous business activities and actions. She refused to accommodate my purchase refund request regarding my situation in any way and ignored further requests. It appears her business acumen is more about taking or better yet STEALING PEOPLES MONEY rather than doing the right thing for her clients! Believe me, there are plenty of designers that have stong ethics unlike Kathy Kemp who obviously has extreme unethical behavior! BUYER BEWARE! read more

The slinkiest wrap dresses ever, designed by a woman who's been called the DVF of our generation. The shop girl sometimes has to explain how the yards of long stretchy fabric are intended to wrap and twist around your body...very funny. And the sale bin near the cash register is always filled with tempting goodies. Suit jackets, etc. on hand along with tunics and dresses, but I find them less than interesting. read more

This shop is super inspiring. She's been making and selling her designs in the East Village since 1995, which really says something about the quality of her clothes. She makes something called "the seven way dress" and "seven way top" which is a version of the dress. I will treat myself to one or the other when the time is right. Like all her original designs, her stuff is timeless (but also very cool) and you will have it forever. I went in today just to look and was chatting with the owner and she said she has designed/created over 1,000 patterns. I think that is really something to be proud of. Again, especially in such a transient neighborhood. It's a really special shop. Get in there and spend some money. Oh! I discovered Anna about twenty years ago through my daughters but never made it to the store until three years ago. What a treat. The designs, the fabric, the thoughtful assistance in choosing the right items for me, items that are unusually wearable with excellent fit. I also love the interchangeability of the clothes--a dress can be worn casually or for a dress-up event; a sweater can be worn three different ways; a top can go with jeans or a lovely skirt. I especially love the black on white dress (not sure of its name) with a vivid design. But truthfully I like all the clothes with their unusual detailing. Colors are beautiful too, a blue just paler than you'd expect, a red deeper. Go and go again as the designer, Kathy Kemp, is constantly bringing in new items. An NYC gem. read more

I've been a costumer of Anna's for more than 10 years. I don't get the chance to shop there often but every time I stop by I walk out with at least 1 item, if not more... (even when my budget is tight). I absolutely love Kathy's designs and the fabric she chooses, they are so unique. People always compliment when I wear her clothes. I do agree with some other reviewers that sometimes the cuts are a bit odd and that sometimes the seams come apart a bit too soon. But I just make it work and fix it, and I still own and love and wear most clothes I have bought there. I am glad to be supporting a local business, and a great designer who has most likely had to stand up against the big chains. Kathy Kemp: you rock! read more

Its getting cold and I'm wearing a favorite blousy knit overshirt bought at ANNA a few years ago. My husband says I look great in this garment, and I get many complements every time I wear it. It's like a sculpture with a short front and a long back, and a not-too-droopy cowl. Though I am pretty average in size, I look slim and tall(er) in this top. What a fabulous, creative, body-appreciative, but not body-constricting design. Have meant to thank ANNA for a long time! read more

Kathy Kemp, the owner and designer of Anna, is a sartorial genius. I find it impossible to go into the tiny little haven of a store without walking out with at least two dresses. The clothes are totally unique and fashion-forward while always being so wearable. Whenever I wear an Anna outfit, it is guaranteed that a stranger will ask me where I bought it. Everyone who lives in the neighborhood knows that this is the place to go when you need something perfect and sexy to wear for a special occasion or date...the only surprise is that Kathy's clothes aren't seen more often in fashion magazines -- then again, it makes this well-kept secret feel all the more special. read more

I have been shopping at Anna for almost 10 years. Kathy Kemp, the designer, has a very specific aesthetic and she has a talent for creating pieces that are never trendy, yet always look current. I guess if I had to describe her style, I'd say it's feminine, gamine, with a little French and grunge thrown in. You won't see them at any other store, either. Everything is handmade from fabrics you won't see everywhere in really sophisticated colors and prints. And almost everything has sashes/ribbons/layers that allow it to be worn in several ways, which the very sweet sales associates will show you how to do. And don't assume it won't look good on you--try it on, since these clothes don't always look like much on the hanger. My only negative, which isn't so negative, is because the clothes are stitched by a seamstress and often the fabrics are delicate, you really need to take care of your Anna designs--rough treatment will wear them out quickly. read more
