But recently I walked by and saw a really nice party dress...perfect for the holiday season. I was in a rush though so I noted the dress and came back about a week later on a weekend. The dress was no longer on display but I found it easily enough on the rack. They had a few sizes left and thankfully one that looked like it would fit. No sooner did I have the dress in hand, did a sales woman offer to start a fitting room for me. A little pushy but after that she didn't bother me so I can't complain. I quickly glanced around the store. There was a lot going on and most of the styles I saw weren't my thing. I think they cater to a slightly older crowd (late 40's/50's +) (they did have a cruise wear section). They also have stuff that I'd consider to be a little more whimsical/unique in design which isn't my personal preference but I could picture some women I know who would love the clothes there. The dress fit perfectly (yay for in-change-room mirrors) and I made the purchase...at just a little over $100 it was a good deal on a party dress in my opinion. I'd recommend shopping at this store on the weekends as it always looks a bit busy during weekdays. Also, during the week they have live mannequins stationed at the door. They creep me out a little bit but others may not mind :)

Poor customer service. The website has the store closing at…read more8pm on Thursdays. In the last 2 weeks, I showed up on 2 separate occasions once at 6:15 and today at 5:45 both times store closed. Today (very upset) because the lights were on, 2 ladies working in the store and the doors were locked. I knocked and the moment the saw me, they went to the back room. I was trying to make an exchange which will now become a return and I WILL NEVER GO BACK AGAIN.

Espy is mostly a women's clothing store, but if you're into denim, they have a wide selection on the men's side. I found store staff to be funky, friendly, fun, and helpful, offering as much personal space as I needed to contemplate any possible purchases. They also offer "closet intervention" services, which considering my casual (and sometimes baggy and color-bending) clothing choices, would most welcome. But only under Gayle's supervision. :)

I bought them last week using a groupon I'd purchased months ago. Always love going in there to see the new stuff as I'm not really a "fashion" guy but really appreciate their help. I'm not always sure what will look good on me based on how it looks on the rack. Megan and Adam are always really helpful and I end up with stuff that I really like. This past spring I called Megan to tell her I was heading to Paris and was having trouble finding a wool pea coat. She told me that they had just been in London and she put her boyfriend in a 7diamonds coat that looked great. She showed me the pictures on the website, ordered it in and I had it in my hands 3 days later. Now that's service. Espy definitely isn't the cheapest place in town but I'd gladly spend my money on quality things that I really like vs cheaping out on just ok ish stuff that I end up not wearing. I can usually expect to go in there looking for one thing but finding others too. Today I was just going to pick up the hemmed jeans but ended up leaving with a new pair of Steve Madden shoes. They were well versed in what was on the floor and able to pull a larger size from the back of an item I wanted to try. All well organized and tidy. Lots of super feminine looks, which is what I'm after. Absolutely worth a stop by for something not at every store. Prices were totally reasonable too. And not everything was polyester, which is so often the case these days.

I got a very cute fake leather jacket for over my dress and they have a ton of hair pin/clip options - and were very patient while I looked through them all :) In fact, the staff were the perfect level of attentiveness (i.e., left my mum and I to browse and chat until we had questions, and then were very helpful and made sure we were happy with our final choices). The only downside to the store is that it's super small, and therefore can feel a bit cramped when there are more than a couple of shoppers in it. So I'd recommend trying to go on a weekday morning if you can!

Super cold in Calgary. I needed something warm and I was told to survive I need something like a…read moreCanada Goose jacket. Back home, we do have the Canada Goose brand but it is never needed. We never go down to -40 nor half of that. The coldest we can ever get is 0 degree Celsius. Vancouver started introducing Canada Goose just last year and it only started to become popular last year. Call me naive but I have never heard of Canada Goose until only back in 2017 when I was first in Calgary (I left at the beginning of November 2017 so I didn't need a winter jacket). I don't even think that kind of winter jacket was ever sold in Vancouver until in recent years or maybe it was just never popular. I thought about going to Eddie Bauer to check out their jackets. But where I am located, I am limited to what I can get. I ended up going to the Core Mall, to Holt Renfrew. Prices are the same as any other Holt Renfrew. The jacket came to $1,102 including tax. It is great that I will be living in Alberta during the winter and it is just one tax. The items sold at Holt are of high quality. Service was ok. When I walked in I wasn't dressed top down like someone with money. After I tried a few things on, the sales person walked toward me and spoke to me in Mandarin. Only issue is that I don't speak Mandarin. So, I told her English only (in case she starts speaking another foreign language). So, the sales person is a bit slow in recommendation. She seems to be a student. She is young and pretty looking. But she doesn't seem to know the products she is selling very well. I mean I guess Holt hires based on looks with not much training. Well, I ended up buying my Canada Goose jacket. But in terms of the service I get at Simons, Simons has better service. Also Simons is not as high end or as high of a price point compared to Holt. But I do shop at Simons quite a bit. Well I just needed something to survive the winter given I am living in Calgary downtown and selections is limited. I am buying out of necessity and less of what it is. Definitely need that jacket to do grocery shopping and etc. Holt Renfrew has a similar layout as Vancouver Holt Renfrew. It has multiple floors and the store is bright and spaciously laid out. In the USA, Holt Renfrew competitor is Nordstrom. I do prefer Nordstrom over Holt.

It's an uber macho/classy/cool place to walk around, my only regret being that it really was time for me to get a haircut. And an old-fashioned shave on top of that? Why Not? Instead, I gravitated to the knives and spent a lot of time looking through it all. That included a neat collection of shaving blades, including a Japanese model from Knifewear across the street. The person at the counter mentioned that Kent of Inglewood offered lessons. I wasn't quite sure about that opportunity. I eventually found a cool little Japanese fixed blade at a reasonable price, but still wondered what I left behind. I know that this was a great place because as I was leaving, I circled back 3 times to take another look. Let's hope I get another chance to find my way back to Calgary and end up here again. And with an open mind and gift list.
