Was referred to Ann's fabrics by the sewing company who made my machine. The first visit Cheryl was ABSOLUTELY rude and ignorant just grabbed my machine and had one word answers to my questions. Upon returning to pick up my machine she was just as ignorant and rude! I was standing at the counter and she acted like she didn't see me, the place is small and behind the counter is smaller you would "feel" someone standing there. She never said be right with you or anything finally she got up and said "yes" I told her I am here to pick up my machine she went in the back brought to the table rang up the receipt and said "here you go!" I just had the most delightful experience. I went to Ann's to order a specific long arm quilter. Everyone in the shop was helpful and beyond pleasant. I'd never been there before but it felt like visiting old friends. The shop is well stocked with a wider variety of machines than I have seen anywhere else. In spite of all the machines, the shop didn't feel cramped and was tidy and orderly making it easy to see and access everything. They offered a really nice selection of fabrics and threads from what I could see though I didn't have the time to really explore. I can't recommend them enough. read more

I bought my sewing machine from Ann's several years ago, and have always had it serviced there by Andy, the owner and expert diagnostician. I had a free motion quilting (FMQ) problem with my machine. I brought the machine to Andy to see what the problem could be. He asked the symptoms and was able to zero in very quickly that my very old, damaged, and antiquated FMQ foot was the problem. Before I bought a new FMQ foot, he checked the machine to make certain it would fix my problem and cleaned up some burrs in the machine as well. So for the price very reasonable price of the FMQ foot for under $16 (cheaper than buying it online!), I went home and finished the quilt with which I had been having so much trouble. I'm a fabric and fiber artist new to the area and stopped in on a blustery day to try to find a local community only to be met with disdain by the woman working. My partner tried asking if there were any classes or clubs after mentioning I "knit and all that" (he doesn't know which exact fiber crafts I do and do not do) and was only told they're online but mostly quilting in the most superior tone I've ever heard even though a look at their website shows many in person classes. She didn't leave the register to assist us or the other customer who came in with us and barely even looked our way as we tried to get information from her. I don't know whether she was rude because knitting was mentioned, because I'm under 50, or because I use a service dog but I won't be returning. read more

I agree with other reviews of people that don't feel welcome. It is very a cliquish environment, which seems to cater to a group of quilters who frequent there for classes, events, etc. I've gone there a good bit for emergency thread, needles, etc., but early on when I was new in town, I experienced the coldness people describe, especially when it came out that I'm not a quilter and garments and home dec are more my wheelhouse. The thing is, to the other reviewers, it's not just you or me. I witnessed it today with a woman who came in. To be fair, there was something a bit "off" about the woman, and this was not the right store for her. That said, the snobbishness and haughtiness of the employee who answered her questions bothered me. If anything, the "offness" of the woman, in my view, warranted a bit of extra kindness and patience, not less. The gentleman who is now the owner is polite and courteous. However, I will say, since taking over, the selection of fabric is a bit disappointing. There doesn't seem to be anything exceedingly "pretty." My impression is a focus on machine repair and machine sales. The only excuse I can make for things like this is that I have noticed the same kind of behavior in another establishment in that area, so maybe it's a Canton (MA) thing? read more

I just visited Ann's with a long shopping list in my hand. Four or five employees and the owner were in the store and no one offered to help me. One was obviously on a long personal phone call. I found a couple of things on my own. The woman at the cash register seemed annoyed that I wanted to check out. I was super relieved to find a fabric store in the area for convenience-sake, but immediately regretted shopping there as the environment wasn't very welcoming. I went in for a replacement needle for my sewing machine. The employee, that I approached, was not friendly!!! She was very hostile, judgmental and rude with her responses when I described to her what I was looking for. Wouldn't go back again. I went to them in January based on the good reviews and took the negative ones as a maybe one-off situation. I would have to agree- because I'm in my twenties, young, and maybe less experienced than people who have been quilting their whole life I was written off... that or they just genuinely don't care. I brought in my Janome MC6600p for a routine service and to be thoroughly cleaned. LOVED the selection of fabrics they had but was going to wait to see what else was there when I picked my baby up. It was several days in their shop for service, and they weren't friendly when they said she was ready. I'm not sure if they judged based on my age, or just don't care... but I went to pick her up. This is my baby. She's an expensive machine... and I went to pay. Now when I pay $120+ for a service for something; I want to know what they did to my machine that's worth thousands. The lady rudely told me "it says what they did on the receipt" and "I'm not a tech." I get that... but seriously I just want to know- did they adjust timing? AccuFeed? Tension issues? Was there anything I should look out for? The receipt said "routine service." I've seen better work notes on a cheap chainsaw serviced at a small shop. They just took my money and said "it was serviced." That's HORRIBLE customer service in my book. I've since added an even more expensive machine to my fleet- a MC15000, and both my machines and I will be driving 3+ hours round trip to NH for service- where my 6600 was serviced same-day, and my 15000 was done in 24 hours... and the mechanic told me EXACTLY what was wrong and what to look out for. WITH A FRIENDLY ATTITUDE. Don't waste your money on these snobs. You and your sewing machines deserve better than their attitudes, prices, or service. They lost my service business, and any sales from all their pretty fabric. Disappointed to say the least. read more

Rude, rude, rude, RUDE! Do not waste your time going to this place! I went in looking for poly-fil, looking to help boost a local small business, rather than shopping at Joann's... BIG MISTAKE. They clearly do not want my business, and are only geared toward their inner circle of customers! I walked in and noticed that it was actually a lot bigger than I was expected and a white haired woman behind the counter asked me if she could help me. I told her I was looking for poly-fil and before I could even get the word out, she said "Nope!" and I said, "I'm sorry?" and she replied, "Nope! Nope! Nope! Not gonna find that here, this is STRICTLY for quilting!" I kindly remarked that I needed the poly-fil FOR a quilt, but she didn't care to hear about that. So I asked if, maybe, they had any lace (because UM some quilts can have poly-fil AND lace *gasp*) and she said "Nope! You won't find any of that here! Go to Joann's." I couldn't even believe it! Not an apology, not a question about what I was making, nothing... just shooed me out the door to spend my money elsewhere! Gladly. :) read more

I went into Ann's looking for a quilting machine. I was warned that they'd try to sell you whatever they were pushing that month for commission purposes, but I went anyway. A woman named Meredith approached me and asked if I needed any help. When I told her my $500 budget, she scoffed at me and with indignation told me that I "wouldn't find anything for under $500 here". I asked her about trade-ins, since knowing what good quality sewing machines cost, I was fine with a refurbished one. "Oh no," she said, "nothing under $2000 used here" (which doesn't make any sense since people often trade in old machines for upgrades) Not only was she condescending, but she reeked of cigarette smoke. Even though I live in Cambridge, I drove down to Canton when I wanted to buy a sewing machine because I had heard good things about this place. When I called them to ask a question about my previous machine, they offered to help me out if I brought the machine in, to save me from mail ordering an unnecessary part. I really appreciated their help, since I don't know much about sewing (or the machines). They sell Bernina, Baby Lock, Janome, and Husqvarna Viking machines. Sewing and embroidery. They also sell fabrics, and machine parts (feet, needles, etc.). Their fabrics are pricey, but they have a tasteful selection, so it's okay. I have heard that you can get a free class on how to use your new sewing machine if you buy from them. They also have an assortment of sewing classes, and a lot of classes on how to use your machine or how to quilt, etc. I'm not sure about the pricing, because I didn't compare too much. I got a 25% discount off of the list price, but then found it cheaper on Amazon. However, I think it's okay to pay a little more when you need the services they offer (I would have never known what machine to buy if I had tried to get one on Amazon!). The thing that sets them apart is that they are kind, attentive, and they specialize in sewing and machines, and they know their business. I felt like I could trust them when making a really big purchase, and I haven't found anything to disprove that yet. It means a lot when you want to make a big commitment like that. read more

This store distinguishes itself with the: knowledgeable and honest mechanics, good models form the finest manufacturers of machines and sergers, and the other sewing related merchandise (thread, fusing, sewing machine feet, quilting rulers, etc) they stock. Anns is in it's own free standing building..with a dedicated parking lot, a customer bathroom, and a fairly big display/test drive area. They also have a large class area in the back and regularly teach technical skill enhancing building classes , and stitch and bitch like quilting under the watchful eye of a master or two. It is expensive, but par for the course for what they sell; like a Fornaggio KItchen or Masserati of sewing machines. You can not go wrong with a single thing in here I noticed some other reviewers had a bad experience, don't let a grumpy or otherwise off staff person scare you off these people Are honest and the merchandise very good (if expensive). The people in there are all sewers and were likely chosen for their technical expertise...they are product demonstrators and teachers, not sales people (first) ...I suspect that if they hadn't repelled those customers'; once they got seated on a machine the staff person would shine and the tester would be propelled through a positive (possibly mind blowing) sewing experience. They now have two mechanics. I have been helped by Andy in the past..he is like a sewing machine surgeon. Very knowledgeable...Also, with machines like this maintenance and proper repair is not only important to function, but also to their holding value...at $2-12K it becomes an issue. On the other hand, if maintained, there is no reason this kind of machine cant become a legacy item. It is one of the few remaining areas where, if you can afford the initial outlay, the high end is still the best value (rather than merely a symbol of prestige). read more

I have an older Viking sewing machine that I had previously brought to Waltham for a tune up. At that time, the only problem was that it squeaked while running at faster speeds. When the machine was returned to me, it was unusable. The Waltham store claimed they had worked on it for 10 hours. I guess when they serviced it, they did more damage than they could repair. I was heartbroken. Subsequently, I brought the machine to Ann's Fabric hoping they could salvage the machine. The repairperson called me numerous times to explain what was broken and how it could be fixed. Now, the machine works perfectly... better than ever. I am so grateful and highly recommend that anyone in need of sewing machine repair seek out their services. read more

haven't been to Ann's for quite some time. Since there are so few fabric stores anymore (other than Joann's) going to Ann's was wonderful. Fabrics you don't see everywhere - such beautiful fabrics. If you are looking to find something unique this is the must stop place in the area. so many new things and of course i want all of them... including the sewing machine which will hold 10 threads..... my grandmother would be be in love. Will have to stop by a more often. read more

What amazing customer service!! We stopped by, machine in hand just in case we got lucky ... get lucky we did. I had used the wrong thread in my Bernina 880 and a piece got stuck in the machine where it wasn't accessible. Andy very graciously opened it right then and got the offending strand out - and then fixed my needle threader! It was wonderful because I'd expected to be told to leave the machine (an 83 mile return trip). I did some shopping in the store and then when I paid, learned I would get a discount for being a guild member. I shall return!! A very grateful shout out to Andy and Cheryl for their help from a very grateful (and HAPPY!!) customer! PS - fabric selection was also excellent. This place is worth a trip. read more

Well, it's became apparent that because my hair is not white, I am clearly not to be addressed or greeted or any such kind offers of help. Otherwise I would have happily requested information on seeing machines as they had a great variety and purchased some of the great select fabrics they have in stock. I have no information on the machines or classes here, my review is based solely off the fabric selection. I am surprised the name has fabric in it as the selection is small. I didn't see any silk/blends, jersey knit, lace, no drapery type fabrics, jean, etc. Only cotton blends. I did not see any embellishments, buttons, thread, etc. 6-8 standing shelves of the same fabric in different patterns and colors. read more

I was drawn to Ann's because I am shopping around for a sewing machine. I wanted to try out both some higher-end sewing machines (Bernina) and some that were more within my price range (Janome) so that I could judge whether the extra money would be worth it. I was also hoping that they would have something interesting among their refurbished machines. I left feeling grateful that I am not the fool that they thought me to be. When I arrived, I was greeted by a cheerful woman and explained my needs--beginning crafter/sewer BUT I want to be able to do some hemming of pants, including jeans. I was led over to a highly-computerized, top of the line Bernina, which I knew was extremely expensive. I looked at the machine, with its hundreds of pre-programmed stitches and told the woman that I am a beginner and am looking for something simple. She brushed off my comment and protested, "Oh, but they are so FUN!" She urged me to try it, which I did (I only know how to sew straight lines), and it felt fine, but I told her that it looked a bit "involved" for me. I inquired about the price and told her that I was looking for something about half that price; I was told that because I want to sew denim, that I need something quite high-powered. I asked about the far plainer Bernina Activa next to this particular machine and the woman acted as if she'd never seen it before I pointed to it. That machine was, in fact on sale, for a fraction of the price of the other machine. It looked a bit worn from use and I was told that the floor model was the last one left. I needed some time to consider the (still) quite expensive purchase so I asked for her card and did some research on the Activa they had in stock. That particular model had been discontinued and was at least one year old; used models were going for $200 less than they were selling it for. I don't want to paint a completely negative picture--of all the stores I visited afterward, this store had the widest selection (of many machines that were far cheaper than the $1500 model I was first shown). This store also encouraged people to sit down and sew on each machine for as long as they liked. I just wish that my concerns were heeded when voiced and that I didn't feel vindicated when I found out the background on that particular machine. read more

I went to Ann's Fabric after learning that Reliable Sewing in Canton closed and Ann's Fabric hired the technicians. I think the new owner bought it about two years ago. He is incredibly knowledgable and super nice. He showed us several machines, talked to us for a while, and had us try some of the cool stitches in the machines we were considering. They also have a good selection of quality quilting fabric (of which I bought more than my share). Awesome place. Will be back for my new machine, fabric, and a class. Can't wait! Update: I've been back to Ann's Fabrics many times since the first visit. While the owner and the people who service the machine are very nice, a number of the employees who work on the floor are extremely rude and generally unpleasant to deal with. Ann's does have great fabrics, but sometimes I either go without it go elsewhere because it's not worth putting up with the unpleasant attitudes. read more

This store is about 45 min from where I live. However I do go there to have my machines service. I don't mind waiting a couple of weeks, since they have a couple of techs and a lot of customers to take care of. I am always greeted with a hello but if some of the staff members are waiting on other customers that customer will get their full attention first (as it should be) When I have bought my machines I told them what I wanted. They have never tried to sell me a machine for a higher price. They would show me a machine that would becoming out soon. When I tell them I am not interested they were not pushy. I liked the fact that they would show me a new product but never tried to push a sale on me. I also bought my serger from them. I have not used it in quite sometime ago. (I am intimated by it) and yet it is the best one on the market. However I asked if someone could show it to me and they put me down for a class, at no cost, since I bought the machine there. I had expected to pay something. This was a pleasant surprise They have a large selection of machines. The store can just hold so much fabrics and accessories, it would require more space to sell every type of fabric there is on the market. So what they do carry is plenty. When I had to call and speak to a particular person and they were busy they would be given a message to call me and they do. If there is an event going on you may not get a call back right away. But they do call back They have previous owned machines for sale. If you have a budget ask about the pre owned machines. I believe if you decide to upgrade (within a year I think) they will give you the money you paid for it towards the new one. I have 2 Ellisimo Gold. One was a floor model and the other a preowned. I use to be a snob. Oh no only a new one will do for me thank you very much . I have longed changed my mind. They do a complete overhaul service on the machines before you take them home. I have been using both now for two years or longer and they run like brand new. I now have no qualms about buying a preloving owned machine read more

Very unfriendly staff. The employee was quick to tell me they'd be getting the fabric in that I was looking for but didn't know when & chose not to seek out the info for me. The owner that was nearby didn't offer assistance and clearly overheard as the store was empty. I had to wait at the cutting table while she finished a text message then again while she put bolts away that weren't in any hurry or in the way. I was grateful for the public restroom however the clutter and cleanliness was the icing on the cake. There was a yard minimum on the clearance fabric. Normally a non issue but when I went back to see if it was notated in that section it was not. A sign would be beneficial. I would like to support local businesses however the customer isn't the focus here. I'd rather the convenience & pleasure of buying online. read more

Do not buy a sewing machine from this store. With the exception of a few caring salespeople, the service at Ann's is shockingly poor. Especially from the owner who makes no extra service efforts whatsoever. Unlike other local stores, training on new machines is not at all personalized. Follow up / communication when a machine needs to be ordered is almost non-existent, the customer must continually inquire to get any information. Based on my experience I would not recommend this store. read more

I am an art quilter working in Dedham, and so use my machines (and use up my fabrics) all the time. Not only does this store have beautiful fabrics, incredible classes and the best machines, it also has the hands-down best customer service I've ever received- anywhere. From the owner Andy, to quilting guru Cheryl, to anyone who's ever greeted me when I walk in the store, everyone bends over backwards to make sure all my questions are answered and all my concerns addressed - immediately. Loved this store. They were so helpful. They did give me a few minites to walk around and then a nice lady was very helpful and helped me locate what I needed. They had a large selection of up to date fabrics. I am from out of town and would definitely go back again. I love to go to quilt shop and been all over.
