Absolutely disgraceful experience. My girlfriend went into Sewfisticated in the middle of the day after a wardrobe malfunction, just looking to purchase a bit of fabric and some safety pins so she could quickly fix her dress before an event. Instead of helping, the older man and woman running the store were condescending, rude, and outright dismissive. They belittled her, treated her horribly, and then chased her out of the store telling her to "go elsewhere." This wasn't at closing time -- it was broad daylight, and the store was open. My girlfriend is one of the sweetest, most soft-spoken people you'll ever meet. For her to come back to the car in tears says everything about how cruel and unnecessary their behavior was. This is the exact reason people are abandoning small retailers for online shopping not to mention the cost savings. When you treat customers with contempt, you lose them forever. Sewfisticated should be ashamed, and I can't imagine this kind of service keeping them in business much longer. read more

The store has an incredible selection of beautiful fabrics, so I was a little nervous to check the price tags but wound up being so happily surprised!!! I haven't found anywhere else in town that sells such lovely cotton for $4.99 a yard. The costumer service was also excellent. Joan and her son Joe even stayed after the store closed to answer all of my questions and give me helpful recommendations for sewing machines. I've often gone to the Framingham location for fabrics to use for costumes and attire with little issue -- limited selection but otherwise a decent visit. This has not been the case in Somerville. I watched the owner (based on convos with others/reviews here) straight up lie to a woman that there was no white silk or satin in the world that she could get her hands on. She talks down to customers like they don't understand supply chains, what fabrics are made of, and what they're actually used for. It's worse if the customers are people of color or look younger than 40. It's a real shame considering their prices were so good. read more

I was in the store yesterday and witnessed an older white woman (I believe the owner) go up to a woman and child of about 3-4 yrs old in Muslim attire. The child was holding an item in a package from the store as they were walking around. The employee/owner took the item from the child, hung it back up on the display, and rudely said to the customer that the child can't carry it around as there are viruses going around (maybe not exact words). I exchanged a surprised look with the customer and watched as she put the fabric she was going to purchase back. I told her that I wasn't going to buy anything either. As we walked out, I told her I was sorry that happened. The past few times I've been to the store, I've noticed the owner/employee there. I haven't seen many of the lovely past employees lately - I heard that one of their other stores closed and maybe that's why different people are there - not sure. In my recent visits there has been a doodle-type dog who walks around unleashed, and yesterday I saw a second dog lying by the registers. There was dog hair on the floor. Maybe they should worry about dog hair/germs instead of an innocent child holding an item. I'm appalled that the customer was spoken to like that, I won't go there again. My experience was nothing short of FANTASTIC! From the minute that I walked from my car to the entrance of the store, I was in love from the curb lol. Upon walking inside I was immediately greeted with smiles from the staff. The staff is AMAZING, helpful and very attentive to each customers needs. I had tons of questions to be answered and it was no problem to them to answer them all. I walked away with so much knowledge and tips about sewing. I hope that the owner knows that he/she has a wonderful staff taking great care of the business. I only wished that the store provided a website so that customers are able to make online purchases. Halloween costumes, curtains, rugs, pillow cases, tapestries--this is an endless fabric playground for someone who loves creating their own customized anything, fabric-related. It's small for a fabric store if you compare it to giants like Joann's, and a little overwhelming for the amount of stuff they have crammed into the square footage, but there are a million types of patterns, textures, and materials to suit your fancy. Chiffon, lycra, batik, heavy draperies...I came in looking for some lycra material for a superhero bodysuit, and ended up spending hours here. I was hesitant about buying a silver fabric, told the girl I'd think on it, only to come back 2 hours later to check out. Girl: "Oh, you came back. Did you decide on which you wanted?" Me: "I didn't go anywhere..." Girl: "Wait, you've been here THIS WHOLE TIME?" I guess she was shocked or weirded out that I spent 2 hours circling a fabric store. Or the sheer amount of time it takes me to make decisions. Either way, she was friendly and was happy to help this fabric-crazed girl. I asked one of the older women here how much material I needed for a Silk Spectre costume, and when I showed her a picture on my phone, she looked at me a little like I was making a string bikini or something -- I imagine it's the same look moms would give their daughters if they were told they took to stripping. With my living room chairs in desperate need of recovering, I made it my mission to find a fabric store. After several trips to the Stop and Shop on Morrissey Blvd. I noticed a sign for a Sew Fisticated Discount Fabrics down the road. I'd heard that Sew Fisticated wasn't the best for a good, quality selection but that they sometimes have just the fabric you're looking for. Sounded okay to me, so I headed over. Many of the fabrics seemed to be outdated and less trendy than what you'd find at a Jo-Ann Fabrics. Of course this was perfect for me since I was looking for something retro! The remnant section is pretty good and is a great place to find fabric for as low as 99 cents a yard. But, everything has it's cons. While there were a few really neat fabrics, this is definitley not the place to go if you're looking for something in particular or are looking to special order. You definitley need an open mind for this place, otherwise you'll never be able to appreciate the true beauty of their newspaper-print cotton weave. They also don't carry fabric that looks like bricks, which is what one guy was requesting as we walked in. I think it was a blessing they didn't have what he was looking for...his project sounded horrible. They also don't have a fancy store. It's a cheap brick building with cheap, faded carpet, cheap, low ceilings, and cheap displays. But if it comes down to it, I'd rather have a cheap building and low prices than a fancy boutique store with high prices to match! All in all, I give this store 3 stars (out of 5). The most expensive fabric I saw was $6 per yard and the ladies will measure how many yards you want at the checkout if requested. I am so disappointed. I went to shop for some fabric for a drag competition I'm in. I overheard a conversation between the owner and one of the employees about Election Day. They were taking about Question 3 (for those who don't know, MA voted on if legal protections for trans* people should be continued or not) and the owner said it was such a ridiculous question. Naturally, I agreed until he continued. He said how these "men" are going to go into bathrooms and rape women and children (even though that's never happened since the passing of this law). Therefore, he said, it is disgusting that anyone would even question thinking of protecting "them". His employee agreed. I will never push my political beliefs on anyone and I understand not everyone will agree with my beliefs, but to say that not everyone should be protected by the law when it comes to discrimination is appalling. For this reason, I will no longer be shopping at Sewfisticated Fabrics. Clearly they don't realize most of their clientele are drag queens. I'll certainly be passing my story along to my drag family. read more

It's not REALLY a crime against fabric de-stashing if you do it on vacation, right? My mother-in-law took me to this, her favorite fabric store, yesterday, and I walked in meaning to buy just one thing... What they have: Amidst the polyester silkies and quilting cottons, there are gems--including fabulous designer fabrics--to be found. Sew-Fisticated is a good-sized store, neatly organized by fabric type with helpful signs indicating fabric type/price. And unlike the NYC stores I'm used to, the bolts are labeled by fabric content. Many of the fabrics are polyester--poly silkies, charmeuses, taffetas, organzas, satins, chiffons, laces, and the like, ranging from about $1.99-$5.99 per yard. I was sorely tempted by some of the fabulous patterns on the poly charmeuses, but didn't want to deal with any fabric even more slippery and stubborn than the silk dress I've been wrangling with this week. In the more-tempting polyester department, they carried some fabulous poly lycra blend knits, for $1.99 or $2.99 per yard--this I could NOT resist. I got 2.5 yards of an amazing soft spiral-pattern knit and 3 yards of an ombre polka dot matte jersey, both black & white. Even more fabulousness was to be found in the selection of silks and printed apparel cottons. All their silks seemed to be $9.99/yard, and they had smooth satiny printed charmeuses, sheer printed chiffons, and solid nubbly dupionis. I even spied the same gorgeous Maggy London bold orange floral silk twill that I'm sewing a vintage maternity dress out of (though I got it for just $3.99/yard online at Fabric Mart, $9.99 is still at least 50% off the original retail value). Which confirms that many of these designer fabrics are designer, even if none of them are labeled as such and the salespeople don't know their origins: Bold prints were also to be had in the cottons. I couldn't resist a soft 100% cotton 60-inch wide purple, black, white and chartreuse floral lawn for $2.99/yard. Finally, I was drawn to the African cotton wax prints, $1.99/yard. Some were quite stiff but others were soft and drapier, and I bought a simple blue and red fish print for a baby dress and a more large-scale yellow and blue leaf print for a skirt for me. There were also selections of fake fur, sequined fabrics, fleeces, quilted fabrics, linen fabrics, swimsuit and dancewear fabrics, not to mention an entire wall of printed and solid quilting cottons and a decent-sized section of home dec fabrics. And according to their website they also have woolen suitings and coatings and bridal fabrics, but I wasn't looking for those. They had a basic notions and trims section--I bought some universal sewing needles and I saw ribbon, elastic, and the like. Not sure about patterns, as I didn't notice, or look for them. The salespeople were helpful and friendly, though the woman I spoke to didn't know the designer origins of the fabrics--a small quibble. Overall everything seemed to be of excellent quality, and the prices were great. I highly recommend Sew-Fisticated for hunting for amazing discount fabric finds! read more

I walked into this place like some sort of reverse bank robbery. Hands up, practically shouting, "I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO A FABRIC STORE". I was looking for fabric for a slipcover I'm getting made and had not the foggiest clue what I was doing. No worries, the staff was all very understanding of my complete ignorance and super helpful--especially the man I presume to be the owner. As others have said, you don't come here with hopes of finding a specific fabric by a specific designer. But if you have a general idea of what you are looking for, they have a great selection at really great prices. I walked out with 3 1/2 yards of a perfect aqua velvet fabric that I am obsessed with for $20. By next week, I expect to have at least 50 yards of fabric in my house that I HAD TO HAVE but cannot do anything with because I do not know how to operate a sewing machine. read more

OMG, OMG, OMG. That is what I thought when I entered this store today. All I could see was rack after rack of to-die-for silk duiponi silk. Why is that such a big deal? Have you tried to find real silk lately at a real store? It is NOT easy! Even my local super-awesome sewing store (Saftler's in Whitman) doesn't have silk. And have you tried to find great, varying shades of satin? JoAnne's has some but let me tell you, it's slim pickings. Sew-fisticated had every imaginable shade of satin-- I was in heaven (not that I use tons of satin but it's great as trim for cute skirts). Let's be clear: this is definitely not somewhere to go if you, say, have a specific print by a specific designer in mind. This IS the place to go if you want beautiful, unique (they had imported, authentic African fabric! not my style but how cool is that??) fabric at GREAT prices. The catch is that you must buy at least one yard of fabric and they will not sell you the fabric if there is less than two yards left on the bolt. Also, if you see something you like, get it! Chances are it won't be there the next time you go. If you're into sewing clothes, this place is a little bit of heaven, especially with the crappy alternative of Jo-Anne's and fabric shops dying by the day. And just some random observations that I can't seem to fit into my above review: -They have a wall of zippers--both regular and invisible-- in tons of colors -Tons of cool fabrics to make costumes -I saw really nice drapery fabric for $1.99/yd!!!!!! Sewfisticated was the very first place I bought fabric, 34 years ago, and it's still there selling for a great deal cheaper than the chains. It hasn't changed in all that time, and I appreciate that, the same way I did when I was a broke college student looking for costuming material. I also appreciate that this is one of the rare smaller fabric shops where I have never gotten a hassle or shocked stares for being a man. Buying fabric? By *myself??* Well, I haven't. Ever. Addressing some of the whining below, about those dreaded remnants: what can anyone possibly do with them? Only a yard of fabric?? Well ... I can only imagine that the poster has never met a curious segment of the sewing population called "quilters," for whom working with a whole yard of the same fabric at once is often gilding the lily. Or else the poster has never met another segment of the sewing population called "costumers," who look at relatively small amounts of fabric and turn them into something amazing. For my part, my most recent purchase at Sewfisticated was about 30 yards worth of very heavyweight, very high quality wool/poly blend at about a tenth the market value (they were originally intended for winter weight dress suits, and were in black, grey, navy, maroon and the like), just because they were yard, yard-and-a-half remnants. Sewn as appliqued strips, they made colorful cloaks -- as well as all-weather and virtually indestructible -- for the medieval reenactment/Ren Faire crowd, and sold at a honking profit. Or the Shopzillas whining about the credit card policy. A number of places -- especially the lower-margin places -- do this. Always have. Always will. Grow up and get over it, or freaking bring cash next time, or go hit the two freaking ATMs in that large parking lot, or go pay twice as much at Joanne's for your fabric if you can't be bothered. read more

Discount Fabric Store Heaven!! I left one star off because I don't know how this store does for notions and other accessories for sewing/crafts. I saw a small selection of acrylic yarn that would be completely unimpressive to any serious yarn snob out there (me) and no knitting/crochet needles at all. Probably not the end of the rainbow when it comes to notions. But OMG!!! The selection of fabrics was fantastic. If you have your sites on somethign specific like black lycra or white cotton eyelet you may come away disappointed. It doesn't look like the kind of story to meet specifications or standard issue stuff. If you're looking for something fun, beautiful, rare, or something that will stoke your imaginative juices you can't go wrong by stopping here and having a look around. The discount table is where I got most of my stuff and it wasn't junk. Probably fabrics that someone asked for then changed their mind after it had been cut from the bolt. I got some nice velvets and a glittery fleece fabric. I would have bought more stuff but my bf kept me tethered down. Get there before I do. read more

I love this store, I personally swear by this store, it always gets me happy whenever I get out on a Saturday or Sunday and see the ladies who work there. The selection is very large in terms of silks, brocades, upholstery fabrics, cotton calicos, and broadcloth too. There's tables for every section of the store for clearance (1.99/yd Calicos and 3.49 for lace curtains and upolstery) There's projects hanging on the ceiling made by the employees and they are all so cute! The trim selection ranges from crafts, grosgrain, satin, braid, raschel, cotton, venise, tassels (furniture), and cluny. I go here a lot just to finger the selection of calicos, the store doesn't stock very often, but it's also more vintage and random. The wedding favors are in the bridal type of costume category, ribbons range (see above), and there are some cute displays at the counter stand. I don't really touch the really cheap looking stuff, but they're decent for crafts. The fabrics are on the low to moderate end side (except for my lovely peter rabbit and winnie the pooh quilting fabric - if you are willing to scavenger hunt), I believe they are company's outlets or test samples since I see defections from time to time. Except for the upholstery fabric or furniture fabric - they always seem to be the highlight of the store. They are all neat and orderly every time I go there. I sew A LOT of Victorian inspired clothing, so they have a wonderful selection of paisley, brocade, embroidered, florals, toile, lace, and eyelet fabrics. The staff on the weekends consist of my favorite employee ever - Deborah, two girls whom I used to go in elementary school with, and a Hispanic lady (forgot her name.) On the weekdays, I believe there are two older women, they are just as nice. There is also Lamberts and the Ice Cream factory in the same plaza. So it's just a wonderful walk away from fresh groceries and good ice cream. It's also near a bus route so just MBTA map it. I I haven't sewn much of anything, but was given a machine to use. I was a bit nervous/intimidated walking as the only male in the joint and having no clue what I was doing or really looking for. They had what to me seemed a big selection. I found some fabric I liked, but, after taking it to the counter and explaining my project (curtains or a too-sunny-in-the-afternoon south facing home office) was told it wasn't enough fabric. I was informed of the standard widths and after a bit of math on my part, headed back to the copious bolts of material. After finding the cloth and some thread to match I got in line to be rung up. All three of the women working were sure to ask if I had finally found what I needed while I waited to check out. They seemed genuine in there concern for my well being. I was looking for some fabric to help decorate in our church and we were told by a few people to come here. A lot of our friends who sew come here for their fabric and thread and so we took their advice. The store has plenty of options and the prices were pretty decent as well. I felt the cashier was a bit rude to me at first. I didn't really know the process of buying fabric here, where to line up and such and she seemed like she was in a rush. I was turned off at first but then after a little conversation, she gave me a 10% discount because the fabric was for the church. She redeemed herself after that. Everyone has a bad day and I'm sure she was busy. Quick Tip: Make sure to have all your fabric ready before you step up, they don't like to hold on to your fabric until you're ready to buy. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. I want to really love it because Boston has a serious lack of fabric stores. But there are a few issues. Here's the good: I've found some really nice, unique fabrics here at fabulous prices. And it's close to where I live, so I can make a quick trip when necessary. But I must emphasize that the prices are fantastic! Here's the meh: Remnants. I'm not sure the how and why, but they have a lot of tables of remnants among the bolts. Very small remnants. Like sometimes just a scant yard. What are you going to do with that? I went this weekend looking for corduroy. We're on the cusp of autumn, so I thought for sure they'd have some in. And they did. A couple of remnants in about 3 different colors. And that was not going to serve my purpose. The place was wicked busy, so it took a few minutes to get someone's attention. But when I questioned the woman running around, who looked like the manager, "do you know when you might get some more corduroy in?" she brushed me off with a sigh and a flippant, "we get new stuff every day, honey!" Alrighty then! I'm always on the hunt for African wax prints. You can sometimes find them here. Often times just a tiny sliver of a - wait for it - REMNANT, and other times a little bit more. They are not usually the top quality African prints, so if that's what you're looking for, I suggest Etsy, eBay, or one of the African stores in Hyde Park. But they do stock some nice sized bolts of African lace. Other than that, they have a small selection of other stuff you might need - buttons, thread, zippers, trim, etc. Unless you're looking for something really unusual, you'll do ok here getting the basics. And I will keep going because of the limited fabric store options around here, but like some other reviewers noted, it can be a little hit or miss. Go when you have some time on your hands because it is always busy. read more

Love! This is my favorite fabric store in the city (Winmil is a close second). I've been coming here since high school (almost 10 years), and I've always had nice experiences. The people who work here generally aren't very talkative/overly helpful with customers who don't request assistance, and I guess I've just gotten use to it. If you do have a question, in my experience, they will help you out a lot, but if you just want them to approach you and go above and beyond, this just isn't the store for you. The prices are geat, and I love that I can come here and find modern patterns (Winmil has $1 patterns and I prefer their selection/prices, but I can't always get to Chinatown after work). I got a great pattern for a sheath dress here. Very Victoria Beckham-esque. The patterns are arranged in the back of the store, and are VERY organized. Definite plus. I drive here, so I can't recall if it's accessible by public transportation, but I do know it's worth the trip if you sew as often as I do and prefer to buy fabric in person and not online. read more

I almost never write reviews but this place has the worst customer service. Today I went in to buy a bag of elastics, and went back in line to buy another after I realized the limit was two, the lady at the register was swearing and complaining loudly about how people are "so f-ing selfish" and that it's "driving her crazy." I don't know why they have such rude people working there. I work at a hospital and make masks for my colleagues, so that's why I went to buy another one. I've been to this store three times, each time looking for a particular fabric for a project. I found what I wanted only once. The prices for some items are very good, and for others (silk) are similar to what you'd find in a normally-priced fabric store. The real benefit of this place is the rolls of upholstery fabric in the back; though selection is limited, there are at least a hundred rolls of large upholstery fabrics in back. You just have to realize that you can't get any more than what's on the sales floor. It's also very strange when zumba is going on in the gym upstairs- it feels like the ceiling is going to crash down on you and the windows are going to shatter. read more

Went here for the first time, and it was packed because everyone seemed to be buying fabric for Halloween. I was looking for some fabric to use as a backdrop. Because they were so busy no one was able to help us, I think there was only a total of 3 salespeople and they were pretty much all behind the counter. Which is totally understandable, there was a long line. I have no complaints with this store, I'm sure on a regular non-busy week/day they are more attentive. The collection of fabrics is pretty good. I was especially happy with the price I paid for 3 yards of nice quality fabric. Mind you I had to go through a lot of lesser quality fabrics to find the right one. Would recommend :) read more

At first glance, sewfisticated is a fabric enthusiast's wet dream. Cheap prices. Lots of options. What more could you ask for? The smallest modicum of service is what. It doesn't matter how busy the store is. The employees act like it's an inconvenience to have to answer questions. I've repetitively been met by an enormous sigh no matter how simple my question was. They also have no idea about their inventory. I called and asked if they had brass snaps in and the owner insisted they absolutely didn't have those when I had bought them there just 2 days earlier. However, while checking out with a cashier who when asked her name replied, 'Felipa', I stated my request for how much fabric I needed cut. While Felipa cut the fabric, I requested not to accept the piece she cut, I felt it was not in the best condition, the piece appeared to be very wrinkled and ruffled and over handled by more than likely other customers. Which would have been OK however I just preferred a better piece. I bought about 10 items including 3 yards of fabric. Felipa responded with in a snide tone, sassy even for customer service, that I should have told her before she cut it, she would not have cut it. She went on and said you had it on the floor didn't you, you dirtied it, however a different sales person assisted me while I was shopping on the floor and stated I should put the material in front of the checkout area on the floor, she wouldn't put it back in stock and that way when I come back to the register, when I'm ready to check out, I can let the cashier know how much fabric I would like. That's the reason I put it on the floor because your staff told me to put it on the floor. Did not appreciate the lower than polite customer service attitude from Filipe. Those fabrics in the promo pic that look like batik are REAL batik (probably made in Indonesia) -- not always available but, as with much of what you will find here -- excellent quality at amazing prices. The owner, John, is back and forth from NYC every day or so. He's the hardest working guy I've ever met, and very knowledgeable and kind. This isn't the big chain (think Joann's) kind of place at all, and while the selection can be unpredictable there is a lot of upside to that characterization. Many times the pieces are designer samples that will never be manufactured on any scale, and often just fabulous. My advice is that if you see something you love, just buy it. It will probably not be there when you change your mind later and try to come back for it. read more
