If you're ever in Rome and looking for a great edible souvenir--or something special to bring home to friends and family--Antica Caciara in Trastevere is a must! Over a few days, the name Antica Caciara kept popping up. Then I picked up a Louis Vuitton Rome City Guide in our hotel lobby, flipped through it, and there it was again. At that point, it had to be fate... or really good marketing. I'm choosing to believe it was fate! The moment you walk in, you're hit with the most amazing aromas of cheese and cured meats. They have a wonderful selection of cheeses, meats, cookies, oils, balsamic vinegars, and all kinds of Italian goodies. But what really made our visit special were Roberto and Anna. Their family has owned and operated the shop since 1900, and they welcomed us with such genuine warmth. Roberto proudly showed us a magazine photo featuring him and the shop, and you could immediately tell how much his family and their history mean to him. It was absolutely charming. Of course, we couldn't leave without bringing Italy home with us. We bought what may have been an excessive amount of 24-month Parmigiano Reggiano to share with family and friends. Anna got quite a laugh out of how much cheese we were taking home! Let's just say an extra suitcase was needed. She even gave us detailed instructions on how to wrap and store it--cheesecloth first, then parchment so the cheese can breathe. Our friends and family were thrilled to receive their little pieces of Italy, beautifully wrapped just the way Anna taught us. Places like this are what make traveling so memorable. Yes, the food was fantastic, but it was the people, the history, and the personal experience that made Antica Caciara one of our favorite little discoveries in Rome. If you're in Rome, go! From the moment you set your eyes on this shop, you can begin to smell the cheeses from outside! When you walk in, you will be transported into an amazing wonderland of cheeses, proscuitto, wine and more. The aroma is heavenly and created instant happiness when looking around at the faded news articles and pictures on the walls surrounding all of the meats and cheeses. This is definitely a local shop, right off the main thoroughfare in Trastevere. Roberto is always smiling and friendly, even when he speaks very little English, and I did not know much Italian. I stopped in here twice on my trip to Rome and dream about this place often. Wish I lived closer so I could try all of the amazing offerings this store has to offer. Cannot wait to return! read more

First order of business when arriving in Rome, load up your hotel with some wine and cheese. Lucky for us, we stayed down the street from Antica which seemed to be one of the top places in the area. I'm a huge fan of funky cheeses and this place smells like funky cheese from down the street. At reasonable pricing and a huge selection of wine, cheese and meats, this place is unbeatable. First, the people working here are extremely welcoming, equally to locals and visitors. It is a beautiful, "old" cheese and meats shop with some delicious breads and other items on the shelves (pastas, etc...). The cheeses and meats are delicious and they will give you as much or as little of something without any problem. Ordered so much cheese, prosciutto di Parma and bread, expecting to be super expensive and couldn't believe the guy when he gave me the total every time we went here. My husband and I were looking for something yummy to take on a picnic. We stopped at Antica Caciara and couldn't believe the amazing customer service. We told the young man working what we were wanting to do and he sliced a bunch of small portions of all his favorite meats and cheeses. He was so fantastic! We also got some bread to eat it with. This was one of our favorite meals we had in Rome, we loved everything he gave us and wish we could go back! Stopped here while walking from Travestera to Vittoriano. The people who own this salumeria are wonderful and speak English. I asked for recommendations - and they offered to give me a variety of meats & cheese in very small quantities- to have a picnic in a piazza. Overall a great experience and the bread, cheese & meat were delicious! Only complaint is that I live too far away to go everyday! read more

Anna was absolutely wonderful in helping us pick out souvenirs for our trip home! We picked up Balsamic vinegar, truffle oil, truffle sauces, jams and wines - each item vacuum packed by Anna for the passage home!! Fantastic shop. In addition to buying cheese and meat here, you can get a simple sandwich made from any of their selected products. They've also got a small selection of biscuits and they make very tasty souvenirs. This place is absolutely fantastic ! They spoke little English, we spoke little Italian but they were a great help and we left with an excellent selection of meats and cheeses. This is not a tourist shop it is for the individuals that make this area their home. The food was delicious, the staff was very patient with up and we were treated like welcomed guests in their home. I think the price was very reasonable. My husband and I got more than enough meat, cheese , bread, pesto & a bottle of wine for under €20.
