Antigo Restaurante 1º de Maio - tuna (delicious, enough for 2 people)

10OCT2017 Another very good meal ruined at the final moment by 3 words: "no credit cards". WTF! You happily took my card on September 20th. But, tonight, you are avoiding the tax man? Why do business take these actions that completely destroy the mood? We had another very good meal with: Vinho verde Vinho tinto. Salad. Pork. Scabbard fish. It was delicious. Plum cake. €58.70 20SEP2017 This is a small (30 seats) traditional Portuguese restaurant with tasty comfortable food and very good service. Your waiter, Miguel, speaks fluent restaurant in 7 languages. He is quite entertaining. Our vinho branco was a Quinta do Carmo, 2015, $19. A starter of melon and dried cured ham. Refreshing beginning. We split the tuna steak. This grilled perfectly and seasoned in a rich sauce of tomato and onions. Dessert was custard with plum jam. And port. + Menu in Portuguese only. Yea! + Inexpensive couvert. + Table cloths. + Coth napkins. + Credit cards. + A really cool and different wine list. I have seen anything like it. 0 Average flatware: Marquil. - No Wi-Fi. €55.15

If honesty was a meal, this place would be a buffet. But it's not a buffet; this is a place that serves terrific traditional, old school, from-grandma's-kitchen fare. We got there slightly on the earlier side - around 7:30pm -which meant we got all the attention from our server, Miguel. Miguel is a national treasure - he's warm, welcoming, and well-versed in English, Italian, German, and Spanish (in addition to his native tongue). The entire menu is in Portuguese (a great sign for a non-touristy place), and has a full page of dishes that's updated daily. The range is extraordinary. We asked for recos of traditional fare we can't get commonly, and Miguel did not steer us wrong. The Bachalau A Braz was delicious and not overly salty. The mashed rice with cockles side that accompanied my fried John Dory was flavorful and a terrific complement to the fish. Great wine recos, and a lovely LBV port capped the evening. I'm torn between writing a glowing review because this restaurant deserves it, and not writing one at all to avoid this place getting overrun with tourists. Ahh well, this place deserves all the success it can manage - it's a treasure. And Miguel - there's none better in Lisbon. Oh, and ignore the curmudgeon review below that says they don't accept credits. They absolutely do.

This was a nice little find on the backstreets close to tour Air BnB. We called ahead just to make sure they had availability and told us to come on in. The staff and in particular are waiter was extremely friendly. Although the menu was in Portuguese, our waiter was able to explain everything in perfect English. The restaurant itself has a small old family feel- nothing fancy. Good wholesome food without being spectacular. The menu has lots of fresh fish. I was recommended the local white fish with Portuguese potatoes which was excellent. The whole meal including bottle of wine came to only €30. #dealcentral

Small place that was really busy. Authentic Portuguese food. Tuna steak was very fresh and perfectly grilled. Fried rabbit came with some clams and fresh cut fries and was very tasty. Cubes of chicken with fries was grilled. Little light on the flavour, but good.

A good local taverna, but nothing impressive. It was quite cheap, the food was fine, and the service was excellent.

This was one of the best meals I had in Portugal. The tuna tartare was a true stand out. The cod was perfectly cooked. The bread and butter, while seemingly simple had this unforgettable truffle taste. And the corn bread, yum! I can't deny eating the entire basket of bread... Ended with the hazelnut dessert because it's clearly a must. The exploding olives weren't for me but that's my only "complaint." Portions were huge. So I would suggest sharing multiple dishes with someone else. A delicious meal that I am still thinking of days later.

This is a place that not only cares about curating a nice atmosphere, but goes above and beyond in service and food quality. It'll be one of the places I return to if I'm ever back in Lisboa.

The restaurant looks modern and classy - I just love the use of mirrors. The waiting staff were very helpful and recommended the rabbit baklava with pistachio for my starter. I was visiting on my own, and this help was most appreciated. It was dinner time and I was ready for my fill. I love seafood, so the sea bass with mashed potato and vegetables was a great way to continue my meal. I waited with anticipation of this treat. It was cooked to perfection and made me very happy indeed. The food was all amazing to eat and this was the best part of the meal for me. Just great! I still had room for dessert as I have a sweet tooth. The Chocolate Duplex with chocolate ice cream was always going to be my choice from the moment I saw it on the menu. I went for it and didn't regret a single bite. If you are in Lisbon, then this is a cool restaurant that you should try for a meal at any time of the day.

Price is quite fair and considering what we have across Europe, even cheap for such high level food and location. Downstairs the cocktails are great and have possibly he best Cosmo I've had in Lisbon. A must, when in Lisbon!

It is a small restaurant so it pays to get reservations far in advance. The interior is kind of like a house, intimate and very comfortable in a minimalist style. Our table had a view that was breathtaking. The design details are great--even the flower vase at the table was beautiful. There are two choices for the set meals--both with the option of wine courses. My wife and I both ordered the option with fewer courses, then I did the wine pairing. Before the meal, they brought us out a sparkling wine and a white port. Both were excellent--my wife had three glasses of the sparkling wine during the meal. All the wines were from Portugal and all were excellent. We had two courses of amuse bouche. The first had a parsnip cream with pine nuts along with this triangle beetroot bites. Both were phenomenal--I would have been happy with a meal of either of them. The next course was tuna, that came with cucumber gazpacho. They matched so well and this was SO good. This was matched with a vina verde grape that had kind of a green tint but matched perfectly Next was bread. This might be considered odd as a course, but exceptional. Not only was the bread perfect, but it came with great gravy, butter, and olive oil (from Portugal). My wife does not even like gravy, but now wants to try to replicate the poultry gravy here. Then the butter was spectacular also. Next was the sea bass. I think this was my favorite course and one of the most incredible bites I have had. The sea bass was moist and flavored so well. Then the sauce was such a great complement, just extraordinary. This was paired with a Portuguese Riesling that was also great. Next was lamb that was paired with a red blend of 65 grapes. It was really good pairing. The lamb was moist and just melted in the mouth. This came with scallions and fennel--included some sweetbreads wrapped in a scallion. I am not a big sweetbread fan, but well done. After that was a dessert that had crème on a pistachio crumble. Really great. There was a Madeira that came with both desserts, again a perfect match. This was followed by a coffee gelato with these little gelatinous cubes of tonic. Just amazing. The final item was not an official course, but a Madeline with tea or coffee. Again, this was so good and I loved the Darjeeling tea. Just a fantastic, incredible meal.

Staff were friendly and welcoming and the restaurant was so beautifully decorated and designed. To be completely candid, I was unimpressed with the Portugal food scene before this meal so I came in with no expectations but they surprised me. Each dish was delicious in their own right, my favorite being the artichoke (OMG! divine) I like how they use the core ingredients in so many ways in each dish. Only areas where I felt EPUR fell (just a little) short was they had limited variety of non-alcoholic drinks--wish they had a non-alcoholic pairing or at least some mocktails and their dessert seemed like an afterthought. Overall, I really enjoyed my night.

(FYI: lots of tourists) They only have 1 main which is their signature dish, the seafood rice. The rice is cooked in a seafood broth with a good mixture of shellfish like mussels, crab and shrimp. You can add lobster at an extra charge. This dish reminds me of paella, but with more soup? We didn't really get any appetizers but they do have a small selection if you want to add more to your meal. We had 3 people and ordered one main for the table. My husband is not the biggest seafood person so it was enough but if you have big eaters, then consider getting apps. The place is kinda small and cozy but not overly crammed together. The staff was efficient and warned me ahead of time how long it would take to make the dish.

We dined at the new location located two doors down from the original restaurant, which appears to have opened to accommodate the steady stream of customers that come specifically for this dish. We ordered the seafood rice for two, which is the restaurant's signature offering. The dish arrives in a large pot and is more broth-forward than a typical risotto, with rice cooked in a rich tomato-based seafood stock and packed with shrimp and shellfish. The flavour was excellent -- deeply savoury with a strong seafood profile. It's the type of dish that feels traditional and comforting, clearly built on a well-developed stock. Overall, this is a great spot if you want to try one of Lisbon's classic seafood dishes in a casual setting. It's not about a large menu or elaborate presentation -- it's about executing one iconic dish very well.
