We loved Casa da Índia! A slightly deceptive name, but we knew walking in that we would be ordering Portuguese food thanks to the recommendation of our hostel. The food was incredible! I ordered the grilled cod (delicious but beware of bones), and also tried the seafood rice (I would highly recommend!), rabbit, and chicken (both also good). Within walking distance and recommended by our hotel manager, we came here to try it out. It was only a Wednesday night but it was quite packed. We were seated right next to a couple who just got their order. They couldn't get out unless we get up. Good thing they seemed to not mind it at all. I am pleased to see a good ratio of locals and tourists. We didn't try the drinks but the food we ordered tasted great. The grilled chicken was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Following the advice of our excellent food tour guide Agathe from Devour Tours in Lisbon, we had dinner at Casa da India(not Indian food, it's named for the spice store that once occupied the space) and were thoroughly pleased. The food was reasonably priced and delicious (I had some of the best grilled octopus I've ever had), the atmosphere felt very "local" and the service was great. Our first night in Lisbon we were pretty darn tired by the time we had to decide on where to eat for dinner so we took the advice of our tour guide and tried Casa da Índia. I knew as soon as we walked up to the window we were gonna like this place - since the grill is right there as you walk in the door. This was an interesting place for our first meal as you can either sit up at the bar or you sit a cagey type tables where you might be seated right next to a stranger. We chose the tables and had fun briefly chatting with another family (they were from Italy). We ordered some wine and for our meals I had the grilled shrimp and Wifey had a small steak. My shrimp (and fries) were delicious...not sure of the seasoning but it was really quite amazing. Wifey's steak was tender and cooked perfectly. I came here during my solo trip to Lisbon. As always when I am traveling I am on the hunt for that cultures home dish. I was on the hunt for cuttlefish and this place had it for a great price! Cuttlefish is a squid like calamari. Theirs was grilled, I was looking for something fried. However it was decent, I guess that's how the Portuguese do it (grilled) haha. While in the restaurant a local offered me some of his dish which was fries, chicken and rice. It was all good together, my first time eating fries and rice together. Clearly the hospitality was great here. You have the option of sitting at a table or at the bar top. The spot is cosy but was filled with people so I take that as the food is good here. After our day trip to Sintra, we asked our tour guide where we could find a really great, authentic Portuguese restaurant in Lisbon, particularly the Bairro Alto area. He suggested we try Casa da Índia, where he told us a lot of people really enjoy the grilled meat, but he actually prefered the seafood. So, naturally, we got both! It was already pretty busy, which is always a good sign, but we were able to grab a couple of seats at the bar. There's a menu in Portuguese, English, and French. We strayed away from the Portuguese chicken, which is popular at home, and, instead, got the mixed grill and the sardines. We got some bread alone with our bottle of white wine while we waited, as more people packed in and the grillmaster in front of the window pumped out orders in-house and for take-out. The mixed grill was all meat and came with beef, sausage, and a few different cuts of pork, with fries and rice pilaf. The sardines were also grilled and came with potato and salad. I found a couple slices of the pork were so thin that they were a little overcooked, but flavor was great, and the sausage was probably my favorite out of the different meats. The sardines were salty, of course, and really hit that craving. In hindsight, our shared meals would have maybe gone better with a nice, cold beer. The portions were much larger than I had anticipated for the price, and more food than my brother and I really needed. We debated about getting a chicken to go, but that was just getting greedy and gluttonous :) I know there are mixed reviews, but it's worth a try, especially when it's so popular with locals, and it's a good bang for your buck! This place was conveniently 3 blocks from our Airbnb, so we came here 2x in 3 days to try all their seafood. Over two meals, we ordered grilled sea bass, seafood rice, gambas ahilo (fried shrimp in garlic), gambas cocinado (boiled, chilled shrimp), grilled sardine, clams, and Portuguese sausage. Highly recommend the grilled sea bass, garlic shrimp and seafood rice. The gambas cocinado was just average, the Portuguese sausage had a unique taste that must be acquired, and the clams and grilled sardines were not good at all. The clams were full of sand to the point that they were impossible to eat. The grilled sardines had good flavor, but were very fishy and so full of bones that eating was difficult too. This place has a great local vibe, shoulder to shoulder seating at the tables and plenty of cheap drinks. Be sure to try the Portuguese green wine--to me it just tasted like a slightly more sour white wine, but it's a local specialty. read more

We met this really cool couple who had told us they ate here 3 dinners in a row because the octopus was just THAT good. I knew then and there I was going to order the octopus. Service wasn't particularly friendly or informative. After what seemed like a very long wait, we ordered and were very much looking forward to our dinner. Oh right, we chose a grilled fish too. The octopus itself was worthy of five stars. Perfectly grilled and simply seasoned but full of flavour and great texture. Loved it! The fish was well seasoned and tasted good too. Been here twice, got their popular grilled chicken and traditional Portguese soup 3 days ago. The soup was lovely. The chicken was good, it had a super strong char flavor which i love. Went back for lunch a today and i had the steamed clams and grilled cuttlefish. The clams were so simple and delicious. A squeeze of lemon juice over it and drink the clam juice like its soup. The cuttlefish is grilled whole with the ink and spine still attached. Very tender. Served with an onion parsley oil. Super tasty. Keep in mind the service is not fine dining. Its super duper casual. The food is nevertheless great: generous portions, fresh seafood, good price. Despite the name, this place serves Portuguese food. We came here based on a recommendation by our Airbnb host and we were a bit disappointed with the food. I have never had Portuguese food before so this was my first time and I'm not a fan of it. To start, we had the Portuguese soup. It was something that was not appetizing to look at and not appetizing to eat. It was super salty and composed on cut up bread soaked in soup and raw egg white spread across the top. Slimy and salty - enough said. For the entrees, we had the grilled sardines and the grilled pork. The sardines were simply done where it was just lightly salted on the grill and came with some potatoes. The pork was nice and tender, though the I hoped the skin would have been more crispy. It came with fries. All in all, both of the entrees tasted alright. Prices were reasonable at this restaurant. We walk in and there are men with their jackets hanging, a policeman at the counter, and it's PACKED at 2:30 on a thursday. these are all good signs! At our table there was a spanish couple, us, and a french couple and the waiter spoke to all of us in our respective native languages. No frills, locally favorite, dine-in or take-away restaurant. First thing, do not expect Indian food. What am I taking about? Go back and read the name of the establishment. I'll wait. Second, expect traditional Portuguese food. Although they do have a minimally useful English language version of their local menu, the food comes out to the tastes of the neighborhood. For me, this meant saltier or sweeter meals than my usual comfort. As my expectation for Indian food already died as soon as I entered the restaurant and the punches that are Indian spices did not come, I learned quickly to go with the flow. That meant if the regulars weren't complaining of food being too salty or sweat, then this must be what it should be. Most if not all of the seafood and meats go through the one-man grilled at the very front of the house. The man cooks over a coal pit. The man is efficient. Having visited twice over the past two days, I've seen him make every use of that grill to turn over orders on lightening. How he can grill is amazing!
