We loved Casa da Índia! A slightly deceptive name, but we knew walking in that we would be ordering Portuguese food thanks to the recommendation of our hostel. The food was incredible! I ordered the grilled cod (delicious but beware of bones), and also tried the seafood rice (I would highly recommend!), rabbit, and chicken (both also good). Everything was cooked wonderfully and a really great meal to enjoy with friends. It was fun also to be seated directly next to other parties, having shared tables allowed for some exchange of conversation which was so nice and everyone was very friendly!

Within walking distance and recommended by our hotel manager, we came here to try it out. It was only a Wednesday night but it was quite packed. We were seated right next to a couple who just got their order. They couldn't get out unless we get up. Good thing they seemed to not mind it at all. I am pleased to see a good ratio of locals and tourists. We didn't try the drinks but the food we ordered tasted great. The grilled chicken was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Seafood curry is good, though lacking some salt. Sautéed vegetables was nicely spiced with garlic.

Pretty good food! Although the name says India, this is NOT Indian food. It's Portuguese food! The clams were delicious, although very small (and not too salty!). The seabass was flavorful, with a little sea salt added on the skin. The octopus salad was also pretty good, although I think I prefer warm octopus. I wouldn't get the grilled chicken here, which was a little on the dry side.

Our first night in Lisbon we were pretty darn tired by the time we had to decide on where to eat for dinner so we took the advice of our tour guide and tried Casa da Índia. I knew as soon as we walked up to the window we were gonna like this place - since the grill is right there as you walk in the door. This was an interesting place for our first meal as you can either sit up at the bar or you sit a cagey type tables where you might be seated right next to a stranger. We chose the tables and had fun briefly chatting with another family (they were from Italy). We ordered some wine and for our meals I had the grilled shrimp and Wifey had a small steak. My shrimp (and fries) were delicious...not sure of the seasoning but it was really quite amazing. Wifey's steak was tender and cooked perfectly. Sorry - no pics so you'll just have to trust me...this was a great little gem of a restaurant.

Try to make Reservations. Very busy Small Restaurant. They pack you in like Sardines. Staff is very kind. They try to help. But this restaurant is so busy. Be ready to wait to get in or to be Served. Very Local Traditional Cuisine to Lisbon. We ordered soup to start. Grilled Sardines and Grilled Octopus to share. Felt it wasn't enough for four we added the Grilled PorkChop meal. Which came with Rice and Fries. Added a Side of House Veggies and Rice. Food was very good for the value.

This place is a little gem !!! Many locals are recurrent costumers. That but itself says a lot . Usually, you have to wait outside until there is vacancy. The wait is sooo worthy it !! There was one server for the entire restaurant .. he was busy !!!! But somehow he managed to serve us well. I had branzino twice and it was delicious. We tried octopus, seafood soup, which was kinda like a stew, corn, sardines, and other items. There was not one thing that was not delicious.

Unpretentious and boisterous. Patient waiters, but fast service. Fresh and very delicious seafood and draft beer at very fair (to me) prices. My family of 10 ate our fill of grilled sardines, octopus, whole shrimps and grouper; veal cutlet and piri-piri chicken; razor clams sauteed in garlic butter, and a few snails from a neighboring table.

This was the first stop on a walking food tour of Lisbon, and WOW!!! We started with some grilled chicken. My husband, who is not a chicken fan, thought it was wonderful. It was cooked perfectly and the flavor was delightful. Our second entry was grilled sardines. Now, I am not really a fan of sardines that you can get in the States, but this was delicious. And finally, we had some "fast food" which was the grilled pork cutlet sandw

    Trying out cuttlefish!

I came here during my solo trip to Lisbon. As always when I am traveling I am on the hunt for that cultures home dish. I was on the hunt for cuttlefish and this place had it for a great price! Cuttlefish is a squid like calamari. Theirs was grilled, I was looking for something fried. However it was decent, I guess that's how the Portuguese do it (grilled) haha. While in the restaurant a local offered me some of his dish which was fries, chicken and rice. It was all good together, my first time eating fries and rice together. Clearly the hospitality was great here. You have the option of sitting at a table or at the bar top. The spot is cosy but was filled with people so I take that as the food is good here. I would definitely come back and try other menu options. @therichaunt

Mixed grill, sardines, and white wine

After our day trip to Sintra, we asked our tour guide where we could find a really great, authentic Portuguese restaurant in Lisbon, particularly the Bairro Alto area. He suggested we try Casa da Índia, where he told us a lot of people really enjoy the grilled meat, but he actually prefered the seafood. So, naturally, we got both! It was already pretty busy, which is always a good sign, but we were able to grab a couple of seats at the bar. There's a menu in Portuguese, English, and French. We strayed away from the Portuguese chicken, which is popular at home, and, instead, got the mixed grill and the sardines. We got some bread alone with our bottle of white wine while we waited, as more people packed in and the grillmaster in front of the window pumped out orders in-house and for take-out. The mixed grill was all meat and came with beef, sausage, and a few different cuts of pork, with fries and rice pilaf. The sardines were also grilled and came with potato and salad. I found a couple slices of the pork were so thin that they were a little overcooked, but flavor was great, and the sausage was probably my favorite out of the different meats. The sardines were salty, of course, and really hit that craving. In hindsight, our shared meals would have maybe gone better with a nice, cold beer. The portions were much larger than I had anticipated for the price, and more food than my brother and I really needed. We debated about getting a chicken to go, but that was just getting greedy and gluttonous :) I know there are mixed reviews, but it's worth a try, especially when it's so popular with locals, and it's a good bang for your buck! Another plus - open until 2am!

Came here for some bacalhau. The line to get in was pretty long. Luckily I was by myself so I got to sit at the bar. The fish is cooked fresh and they give you pan with spread as you wait. The bacalhau was traditionally prepared, grilled, salty, and dripping in olive oil. The dish came with steamed vegetables and potatoes. Good place for bacalhau!

Brilliant mom and pop diner in the heart of Lisbon. Food was dope. Service was excellent. Will be back again!

As we walked by we saw six different tables occupied by couples and each of them looked very happy with their meals. Not going to lie we checked out what was on the tables and everything looked extremely delicious. As we hovered in front of the restaurant, a server approached us and asked if we were looking to have dinner and we told him yes. He sat us next to this couple and we looked over and saw that they were about to leave. We asked them for their recommendations on what to get and they literally said everything they had was delicious but we for sure needed to try the tuna salad that was on the menu. And as they kept talking about the food they're like you know what we're just going to let you have our receipt because all these things we would order again. And sure enough they gave us their receipt and we ordered every single item that they did in an additional one which was a sardine toast. Considering that the restaurant was in a busy area because of all the bars and restaurants around, the Ambiance was not chaotic. There was definitely foot traffic going up and down the alleyways but it was very chill. People were smiling, laughing, and just overall having a good time as the night progressed. We never got the name of our server, and I call that out because multiple people throughout the night came up to him and gave him a big hug, some were extremely excited to see him because they didn't think he still worked there, and others were appreciative of the time they had with him. Overall it sounded like this individual had been there for years and actually trained a lot of the folks on how to have a great restaurant experience. Hands down we would definitely come back the food again was super fresh, the flavors were just so well balanced based on the sauces that they had and the crunch when it came with the texture depending on what you ordered. And again we ended with the lamb and it was so tender, not gay me at all, and I would definitely have ordered another one if I wasn't so full.

The food across the board was excellent--every dish we tried was flavorful, well-prepared, and felt thoughtfully put together. You can tell there's real intention behind both the menu and execution. What really elevated the experience, though, was our waiter, Bernardo. He brought incredible energy to the table--full of personality, engaging, and genuinely fun to interact with. At the same time, his service was top-notch: attentive without being overbearing, helpful with recommendations, and clearly passionate about what he does. Great food is one thing, but when you pair it with service like that, it turns into a memorable experience. Highly recommend--and if you get Bernardo, you're in for a great time.

I had read in Yelp that lines could be long, but we arrived early. They have a little red rope at the door where they explain the rules. The interior is kind of eclectic. They have wines at three price points, we got a really nice bottle of red called Pops reserve. For the tapas, we ordered the assorted cheeses, octopus risotto, duck breast with chips (not normally on the menu), and ceviche. All were superb. We started with the duck and ceviche. The duck was braised perfectly and seasoned well, wonderful. Then the ceviche had swordfish and tuna. I am not normally a sword fan, but this was very tasty. Next up were the cheese and risotto. The risotto was incredible, buttery and delicious. The cheese plate had 5 cheeses of different intensity. All were great, particularly the goat ones. It came with a pumpkin jam which I had never had before, but was very good. I definitely recommend this place
