Thinking about joining Anytime Fitness (Carleton Place)? Think again...
I jointed the Anytime Fitness gym (Carleton Place, ON) in January of 2020. Contract was for 18 months, with a minimum commitment of 12 months. Bi-weekly membership rate was $22.03 as well as an annual club enhancement fee of $28.25. My experience with this gym is as follows:
1. On March 16, 2020, Anytime Fitness sent out an email that they were closing their gym due to COVIC and that it may take 10 days to 2 weeks for the automatic billing to be frozen and that any credited time would be added at the end of my membership term. What actually happened is that it took over two weeks for the freeze to take place and as a result two bi-weekly payments of $22.03 were withdrawn from my account. Now that my membership is finally being terminated on April 22, 2022, I inquired directly to their head admin department to find out how I would be compensated. They did not offer a refund nor did they offer an extension of 4 weeks to my membership term.
2. Furthermore, It was understood that I would have to pay an annual Club Enhancement fee of $28.25. Despite my account being active for just over 11 months to date (not counting gym closures or requesting my account to be frozen during COVID), Anytime Fitness actually made three withdrawals for that fee (Sep 30, 2020, Oct 1, 2021 and again on March 30, 2022). Given that my account has only been active for 11 months, it is fair to assume that this fee should only have been withdrawn once, not three times. When I recently inquired about this fee being charged again, the admin office pointed out that this fee is to be charged once annually (either Mar 30 or Sep 30, depending on the date joined) and refused to reverse the charge. The two initial charges were processed in Sep and now only 5 months later, they charge me again on Mar 30, which contradicts what their contract stipulates (one or the other, not both).
After getting nowhere with the Head Administrator for this location, I called the owner, JP Levesque and left a detailed voice mail four days ago and still no response. As a result, I filed formal complaints with the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Protection Ontario Services. read more
