i was here when i was 11, delirious, and suicidal. they did *not* really help. they gave me WAY too many meds, one not even called for, after a single day of them not having much effect. im also a bit concerned because i felt, like, *really* good on one of them and im hoping they wont screw up the rest of my life while i was in the waiting room, i could hear people acting out and it was honestly terrifying. also, you can sometimes hear the adults acting out from the child unit. its super spooky up there sometimes... pretty much the only reason i felt better after coming out of there was because the patients there were awesome. the staff, however, were... less than stellar. we did yoga. im not even sure why we did yoga. yoga generally does not help. also, there was *extremely* loud clapping which i REALLY dont like. i heard about a "no phones" rule, but i wouldnt have needed to hear it as i wouldve inferred it by the amount of staff constantly on their phones, but hiding it in their jacket/shirt ect. i was in the waiting room for ~42 hours, as it was implied that they had an open bed, which is why i didnt go to a different one instead. however, they evidently did not. i felt like a specimen to be observed instead of a suffering patient with a broken mind. it felt like a prison, even though id never been to one. its *incredibly* loud in the lunchroom, and me and a friend there would occasionally ask them to quiet down. however, they would get super loud again in about 3 minutes. also, the food there honestly sucks. except for some ribs i got for dinner on my first day in the waiting room, those were honestly the best ribs ive ever had the therapy stuff was really NOT helpful. id say the only plusses were: my roommate was awesome, i found a friend the first day, those ribs, i got to draw whatever i wanted, and the fact that i got to listen to some music of my choice. overall: would NOT recommend. unless your only priorities are good ribs, then please choose somewhere else to go/send your kid to. read more

I went here when I was eleven years old and on my fourteenth birthday after I tried to end my life because of the things I had seen and went through in the mental health system, especially with the prescription cascade epidemic that has been going on since Covid. The first night I went there, I met my ex boyfriend (They didn't enforce Hippa laws enough so I kept contact with him after discharge) we spent six hours in the waiting room before heading up to the ward. The adolescent ward was filthy. Dirt on the floor, rusty mesh chains over windows, and the dining area smelled nasty for some reason. The outdoor area was no bigger than a bedroom so we just sat around. At night, you can hear the adults acting out from the adolescent ward which is pretty chaotic. There's a hard time delievering medications to patients which could be bad news for those with severe mental conditions. The kids with high suicide risks aren't checked on often and someone even ended up medically dead once by using the bedsheets but they were thankfully revived. And just like every psychiatric unit, they always tell you "you're here to get better" while screwing us over then saying we're getting worse so we need more "help". Help can only be defined by the person who's recieving it, not what the person giving it . Help can be simple, just listening to someone could be enough. But they don't want to just listen because then they wouldn't get paid as much. Hell, I saw a seven year old autistic child cry in there because he wanted to go home. Why was he there? He said a common phrase everyone's been saying while he was having a tantrum in school: "I want to die" I said the same thing at that age but didn't mean it, neither did that child and it was clear he didn't but they just wanted to make a profit off of him too. Most of the staff we have dealt with during the times our adult son has been there are unqualified racist,The facility should be shut down,cleaned and restaffed with decent ,educated mental health workers....This place is disgusting and so are many of the workers there..my wife and I are trying to check on our son's wellbeing tonight,and they keep hanging up on us..I do pray to my Lord my son is safe and unharmed tonight,or else this place and anyone involved in his harm will pay dearly for the rest of there lives..... read more

Absolutely horrible place. Orderlies treat you with no respect and have no care for human emotion. They are rude and mean and you feel like you are in a prison cell the entire time you're there. Also, if it's "too cold" outside, the nurses don't let you go outside because, and I quote, "I ain't finna trynna freeze", meanwhile the people there are locked in an area with nothing to do, no windows to the outside world, and not even a goddamn painting on the wall to look at. Zero empathy or care for the individuals there. Absolutely traumatizing experience. This place needs to be shut down. Deserves -10 stars. read more

I was there for a brief time during a bad mental health crisis, and I was crying and one of the workers told me to stop whining and that I sounded like a toddler, they have no respect for people suffering and they only seem to work there for a check, they seemed very arrogant and full of themselves. They don't seem to respect other people's health at all. The admission is terrible it takes all day just to get a room. Then when you are finally taken up stairs and shown your room its nothing therapeutic it lacks a decent mattress, and the mattresses feel like a jail bed, there's usually only one dresser and it has broken shelves in it. You don't receive any counseling while there they just expect you to color, play games or watch t.v that only has a few channels. The doctors seem to misdiagnose you and are there to just give you meds that you may not even need. Don't go there, there are other places that can help you. read more

following a bipolar mania episode i was incarcerated at this facility. i faced sexual harassment and threats of violent against my person from other individuals stuck there. during this time the discourteous staff would not provide therapy, counseling, or any treatment. In fact one of the staff members came into my room without warning or reason and told me that life would cut me down to size and break me (this staff member was pessimistic and genuinely indulged in the act of putting myself and others down). This facility is nothing but a JOKE!!!! Our 15-yo son volunterilly admitted himself after having a rough time with his mental health. Unfortunately, since he is a minor and by law isn't allowed to voluntarily go, they had to baker act him. He went in on a Thursday evening. Ftoday morning we were there around 11:30am ET to drop off clothes and a book. By 4:30pm ET that afternoon, they still had not given him his clothes. So, now he has been in the same clothes that he wore to school Thursday morning. When I called to find out why, I was told they hadn't search the belongings yet. I know they are buys, but 5-hrs, really!!??!! 6:30pm comes around and it is finally time for visiting. Thank goodness he had his clothes at that point, but the visit was only 15 minutes and we drove 45-minutes ONE WAY to see him. All he had done this far that day was watch TV/movies, played cards, went outside for about 10 minutes, and saw a therapist for 10ish minutes. Knowing Saturday had 2 time slots for visiting, we asked as we were leaving if we could come during both sets of visiting hours. We were told no but the gentleman escorting us out. After telling us yes, then I'm not sure, so I didn't trust him. I called and spoke to someone on the home that said it was up to the nurse during day shift. Fast forward to 6:30am Saturday morning and we get a call about meds. I took the opportunity, since it was the nurse, to ask. She said no, but to ask the day nurse. So, I called Saturday morning and was told no. Fast forward to 3:00 Saturday afternoon, our son calls. Tells us he has good news and that he was told we could come see him during both sets of visiting hours. Well so much for that since it ended in 30-minutes. We finish our call and I call the nurse. She then tells me it was not a problem and people do it all of the time. Such a joke. They aren't tending to his mental health, they aren't communicating, and they clearly don't give a damn. Apalachee was a disaster for my son. The children's director, "Dr." Jaime Adleta (she actually isn't a doctor, she is a nurse) was horrendous. She accused my son of lying about abuse he had experienced outside of the facility and over-medicated him. After talking to other parents who also had children admitted to Apalachee I found that this was a common occurence with Jaime Adleta. When I met with Adleta to discuss the terrible effects the medication was having on my son, she insinuated that we were lying about the effects. It was truly a bizarre experience and I was completely dumbfounded that someone could be so unprofessional. I spoke to the heads of the hospital and was assured she had been spoken to about the matter. They were very helpful, however, I will never recommend this facility as long as she is the director. She should be fired. TMH Behavioral Center is the way to go- VERY good social workers and actual doctors work at that facility. read more

I had to Baker Act my 12 year old child. There was only room for four children in the facility and all the children did was watch inappropriate shows all day long. The room they were in look like a holding cell for jail. My child said they didn't have any kind of groups whatsoever except for music therapy which is super awesome. They didn't make my child take a shower or brush his teeth the two and a half days he was there. To my mind the staff is lazy and ill-trained. My child said they never took his inventory or did safety checks. On the day that I picked my child up was the only day that they ever told the kids what the schedule was or did anything according to the schedule The only thing I liked about the whole situation was the doctor that explained to me what might be happening to my child and the music therapist. When I took my child out of the program because it was not good for him, they promised me to have all these referrals and phone numbers and stuff and when my child was discharged our discharge paper said that he was discharged due to insurance issues which is not the truth, and they did not give me any referrals. Also, each time I went to visit my child nobody called me to see who I was and that was very disconcerting. This place is bad for children!!! read more

I sought counseling at FSU because I was suicidal and got Baker-Acted and had the extreme misfortune of staying at Apalachee Center. I was basically neglected for days on end. After being taken there in handcuffs I waited in a holding cell for 7 hours with no food, no information about what was going on while several people including me had mental breakdowns while the staff laughed and joked with each other among other very unprofessional things. There are a few good people who work there but the vast majority are heartless people who treat the patients like subhuman scum. I was needed help because I was having a bipolar episode and self esteem problems due to PTSD from being molested as a child. While staying at Apalachee Center my roommate TRIED TO FREAKING MOLEST ME!!! They didn't show any signs of empathy or concern just made me fill out a report and all they did about it was have a priest come in and read the Bible to him like they are punishing him for being gay?!? I am in complete disgust that this kind of establishment has not been shut down do to the complete lack of professionalism and the multiple levels of abuse that transpire inside of those padded walls and barred windows. read more
