I have turned in my FMLA paperwork to Elaine the lady that does the FMLA, I have called over 5 times and left her a voice mail to call me back and she still hasn't. I have also called and asked to talk to the office manager and was transferred to her voice mail, that was over a week ago NO RESPONSE. I had to call the Philippines to pay for Appalachian Orthopedics to fill out my paperwork for FMLA. Why do i have to call another country to fill out my FMLA paperwork. My sister and I both saw Dr. Clark several times for a shoulder injury that we both had. He told her there was nothing he could do for her and to basically she would have to live with the pain. My self also saw Dr. Clark and was told I need shoulder surgery and was told my BMI was too high for him to do a rotator cuff procedure. I also had a 1.5-pound lipoma in the underarm. Went to see a general surgeon and she did a four-and-a-half-hour surgery and I'm still alive and kicking. Sorry to say that I would never recommend AOA to anyone. GREAT news I have a new Dr. in Prinston WV and getting scheduled for surgery. This Dr. Clark is a pick and choose type doctor. read more

The doctors I've seen have been fine, but the office staff has consistently proven to be some of the rudest and most unresponsive people I've ever dealt with. They have canceled appointments on me without bothering to even call or notify me until I showed up at the office. I've left messages that were never returned. After surgery I was instructed to call and schedule a follow up visit but every time I've called no one is available who can schedule that. While trying to explain that to someone, she simply transferred me back to the same voicemail mid-sentence while I was talking to her. I wish I could rate AOA higher because the doctors are good, but the people I consistently have to engage with 95% of the time are rude and unconcerned with the patients. read more

I don't have very good things to say about the office staff either. My very first appointment, I was told when I arrived that the doctor wasn't available and that I could be see by the NP. Of course I said yes. She took x-rays and gave me a shot (didn't help at all). On my return visit I did get to see Dr. Brashear. We continued on another treatment plan for 6 months. After Covid lightened up, I decided on knee replacement. It was done at local outpatient surgical center. After surgery, Dr. Brashear sent over prescriptions to pharmacy. One of them needed preauthorization from doctor. The pharmacy faxed the problem to doctors office, and my husband and I called several times to talk to someone about getting the necessary drug filled. We were never answered. On my two week follow up visit, I got to see the PA-C, Katie Farrell. She was very professional, answering all of my questions and helping me get the necessary preauthorization for the said drug. She was a breath of fresh air needed during my recovery. She was gentle while removing the staples. She really changed my opinion of my recovery process. I am looking forward to my next appointment with Katie. If you are given the option to see her, then I absolutely recommend her. I hope Dr. Brashear recognizes what a great find Katie Farrell is to his staff! read more

The Orthopedic was extremely damn rude. He didn't even see me. Had the secretary call me to ask why I needed to be seen then called and said they couldn't offer care at this time because I was seen at an orthopedic clinic. The Dr. there could see me sooner than the dr at the clinic which is why I attempted to make an appointment with this practice. Considering how rude they are I'm glad I wasn't able to be seen. It's ridiculous this is considered the leading orthopedic in this area because their patient centered care and attitude to shitty. read more

Dr. Knox was rude, uncaring, unprofessional and condescending. He immediately stereotyped my son. Before even examining him just tried to tell him to live a healthy lifestyle, eat a healthy diet. When I asked about degree of curvature, he couldn't even tell me, said his computer wouldn't let him measure it. The information was in the radiologist report! Complete waste of time. Last year had a swollen foot and went to another practice. Found to have a stress fracture. Went through 5 months of poor care. Foot is still swollen a year later. Called Appalachian Ortho to see Dr Parr. Had all my records sent over. Have waited over 2 weeks for Dr Parr to "decide if he will see" me. Just got the call today from the office saying Dr Parr "is unable to see you." What kind of practice does this?? I am an RN and not originally from this area. Remarkable the sub-par medical care some places offer in this area. I guess driving an hour to Asheville or driving 2 to Knoxville is in order. read more

After months of misdiagnosis and mistreatment at Watauga Ortho - which I won't delve into the aspects of how awful the interactions were with them were - I had a friend recommend AOA (App. Ortho. Associates). I called and AOA explained they must receive & review my records from Watauga and would call me back to let me know if they could see me. This is standard now and is done to avoid seeing drug-seeking patients, which given our area's (and country's) opioid epidemic is certainly reasonable. I heard back from them in a week. As soon as I was at AOA it was completely different than Watauga. My wait was only a few minutes before being called back. After nurse completed her work, Dr. England arrived to the room very quickly thereafter. Dr. England had reviewed my records and MRI from Watauga. It was BY FAR the most thorough evaluation I received in the last year and he immediately said that I needed an MRI arthrogram - MRI with contrast. He felt rather confident that I had a torn rotator cuff but couldn't see a tear on the original MRI. He said with shoulders an MRI with contrast is often the only way to see some tears. After the MRI with contrast, it showed a very clear tear of my supraspinatus (est. of a 50-80% full thickness tear). After 1.5 years of misdiagnosis and undergoing VERY painful PT that Watagua sent me to, I felt so relieved to finally have a correct diagnosis, an ortho that cares and doesn't make you wait over an hour to be seen! read more
