But the fourth floor does hold this museum, which is not huge but does comprise several rooms. I was offered a tour with the warning that this could take minutes or hours. Unlike most visitors, I was not primarily interested in the Hatfield-McCoy feud, but the history of medicine in the area. This topic does get one bit of hallway to itself. My tour guide wasn't really knowledgeable on the history of osteopathic medicine (which would be a big ask, frankly), but did have plenty of anecdotes about the area. Other topical rooms covered all sorts of local history. The Hatfield-McCoy exhibit is front and center, but there is definitely more than that to be discussed. It isn't fancy, but I didn't feel bad about spending $5 and some of my time here, and I left with a little piece of coal they offer as a souvenir.

My husband who was born and raised in Van Lear had been inside either. Finally, on our last trip to the Paintsville area, we made it inside. It's everything that you can imagine. Honestly, it's probably bigger than you would think of for a childhood home of a self-proclaimed poor country singer. It's the childhood home of Loretta Lynn that obviously at least partially inspired the song "Coal Miner's Daughter." It's nestled between two fog-shrouded mountains up a "holler" just two miles southeast of the coal mining camp of Van Lear, which is part of the big city of Paintsville. The house is now owned by Loretta Lynn's brother. The day that we were there, his daughter, Loretta Lynn's niece gave us our tour. When we first walked in, she was giving another group their tour, and the way she explained it, is that to go in and look around, it's free, but a tour is $5 per person. The parking is very limited, there probably couldn't be any more than 5 cars parked in the driveway at once. So, if you have a big vehicle that it's easy to maneuver, forget it.

For those unaware of the "Mine Wars", this refers to a set of violent conflicts surrounding labor disputes, which were ignited in this tiny mining town by a shootout between the locals and some sort of corporate paramilitary. There's a movie about it titled by the name of the town, which is an interesting film but is Hollywood-ized and was filmed in another mining town in New River Gorge. This place is the real deal. The converted building looks splendid, but fair warning: the museum doesn't fill it. It's really only a good-sized room. The variety of artifacts and photographs in that room is worth a look, and like much of history it is both highly relevant today and leads to many contrarian or uncomfortable observations for those living today. The area is also notable for the Hatfield-McCoy feud, although that isn't the main focus of the museum. The historic town is basically one block with a couple of shops and, unsurprisingly, the headquarters of the triumphantly extant local miners' union. As it is at the bottom of a valley with a river nearby, the town is surrounded by a floodwall, into which is carved some pieces of the story here. I wouldn't bank on spending a ton of time here (maybe an hour for me to view the museum and take a quick walk around the neighborhood), but it is a distinctive experience.
