The marker stands in front of what is today the University of Pikeville but it was not always so…read more It has the same text on both sides, reading "Established by the Presbyterian Church in 1889 for the education of youth from the mountains of Southern Appalachia. It now draws students from many states and foreign lands. The Celtic Cross, visible from many points of wide area, symbolizes its Christian aims and purposes." It is marker number 884 and it was erected in 1965 by the Kentucky Historical Society and Kentucky Department of Highways. Local Presbyterians founded the school that students literally helped build by making bricks and raising the first structure themselves. Under James Franklin Record, the institution became a regional center for teacher training and evolved into an accredited junior college by 1909, eventually phasing out its academy and shifting fully into higher education. The campus repeatedly served as a refuge during the catastrophic floods of 1957 and 1977, becoming one of the few dry, stable places in town when residents needed shelter. Its boldest transformation came in 1997 with the creation of the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine, which focused on training rural physicians for underserved Appalachian communities. In 2011 it became the University of Pikeville, reflecting a broadened mission shaped as much by community service and adaptability as by its Presbyterian roots.
