The end of the summer is a perfect time to stock up on beeswax candles for the upcoming cozy, mystical autumn days-- I'm so glad I did that this year! After we shopped, we checked out a mead tasting in the library just off of the main road and had a blast trying all the different flavors. I walked away with a bottle of orange blossom honey raisin mead for myself plus an extra bottle to include in a wedding gift. A new vendor addition was a shaved ice truck that had honey drizzle for all of the shaved ice. Yum! It's, of course, always a little more fun if it's sunny given the theme, but I still had a great time this year too.

Great traffic averting as well because it was blocked off in a way that didn't disrupt the flow of traffic. Lithopolis Ohio showed itself off with this honey festival.

Really a food festival/cooking competition. At Fortress Obetz, mainly in the shade under the bleachers, there were dozens of contestants from regional restaurants, food shops, and private teams. Tickets include free samples, so we wandered and tasted. Mainly BBQ-leaning items, but also tacos, bagels and lox, and more. The worst thing I had all morning was still pretty darn good, and some were stellar. You can vote for your favorite. The competitors were friendly and informative, proud to share and talk about their entries. Baby K wasn't much into it, she's not a carnivore, but she had some pita and a snowcone, and a cookie. There were vendors with baked goods, lemonade, grilling supplies, etc. Free bottles of water, nicely chilled on a hot day. A beer garden. Go early; it got busy quick, and there was just a conga line going from table to table for tastings. Parking at the stadium is easy. There was music throughout the day, cooking demos, and a dog skill show.

But over the past few years, and the downtown in the economy, its gotten a little weaker. In fact, it used to be a 3-day festival with live bands, food, and entertainment, but now its only one day with no live bands, only a few bouncy castles for the kids and a parade that I think is getting more and more peaked by the year. What redeems this event is that it really is a family event and you can spend all day here and have a good time. The children's parade starts at 10am and ends at a carnival. The main parade was at 1.30 and featured Eric Smith of the New York Jets as the grand marshall. The fireworks are surprisingly good and lasted around 30 minutes. Quite a few people come to watch the fireworks so parking can get a bit tight. The school lot was completely filled up but the cops aren't too diligent about ticketing for parking illegally during the fireworks (but you'd better move your car right afterwards) or you can also park for free at the rec center down the road. Or if you don't want to walk or risk a ticket, several of the houses along Main offer parking for $5 a car in their yards.

But the problem with that is you got 10 exhibitors showing the same things and it got a bit monotonous. This year was one of its better years. They had fewer exhibitors (around 30ish) but they were of a higher quality. The show is juried, but I didn't see who had won. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough! But either way, there was a nice selection to look through and I got a lot of ideas for gifts coming up. The live music was a nice touch and I didn't touch the food section but festival food is always good! I'm not sure that I would make a trip out of my way to visit this art festival at this point. But if you're nearby, its a nice stop off for your Saturday!

The fruits and vegetables are fresh and taste as good as they look. I especially love their sweetcorn, can't get enough of it. Last time there I bought a party pack, which is a great bargain for a picnic or BBQ. The only times I've ever been disappointed is when fresh corn season is over. The only time I buy tomatoes is when I'm at Witten's. Grocery store tomatoes don't cut it. If you haven't been there you don't know what your missing!

The car show was cool, alot of very nice vintage cars to admire with owners willing to give you the story on them. A lot of kids, rides, snacks, games as well as live bands for adults and the usual fried foods and art/jewelry stands to browse. Also goes on the entire labor day weekend which is nice. Perfect for a stroll on a beautiful late summer day with the family.

Somehow my wife and I managed to justify not just one, but two (!) meals of fair food this weekend…read more Such is the joy/curse of living within walking distance of the annual Canal Winchester Labor Day Festival. The first go-round was understandable -- we haven't eaten the junky treats of fair food in years. So we loaded up on the first day with corn dogs and fried cheese. The next day, we found ourselves drawn back to the festivities at lunch. Ribbon fries. Elephant ears. Lemon Shake-ups. Yet more fried cheese. How are we still alive? I still feel a little sick. Along with the wonderful fair food, this 80-year-old celebration boasts the usual small town carnival stuff -- a midway with games, live music ( I heard at least three Journey covers), arts and crafts, a car show and a parade. No huge surprises, other than the fact that the small town of Canal does it up so big. It's a blast!

Can we talk about how to kill a good idea? About 60,000 people jammed the Arena District for the…read more2014 FMMF's three day event. It was big, real big. But then someone got to thinking... And a year later, the festival promoters got the great idea to fence in the festival and charge a general admission fee. A one day ticket for just one person? $60. You read that right, $60. Now I'm not into fashion but as far as the music goes, it's an open air festival. Many people realized that you could just walk up to the fence and listen to the music...for free. Hundreds and hundreds of people did do just that. BTW Ludacris's "Number One Spot" sounded just fine through that chain link fence... The promoters also came up with the great idea of selling one day VIP Tickets for $110 per person. Now according to their website, purchasing a VIP ticket got you these additional benefits over general admission: "preferred viewing areas, preferred restrooms and priority entry at the gate". Well, I never once saw anything resembling a line to get into the festival so in reality that extra $50 bought you the privilege of stepping right up to the head of the porta potty line any time you liked. Now doesn't that make your tushie feel special? On a positive note, I give a thumbs up to the promoters for trying to get some better entertainment this year and for including more local food trucks instead of relying on the carnival food fare like they did before. 2 Stars this year.

And turns out, this is where Columbus Speedway was, and I had been there years... well, decades ago. The festival didn't use the field, but had tables in a beer garden by the entry, and music, and then vendors and competitors between that and the stadium (and under the shade of the bleachers, thankfully.) Well arranged, plenty of tables, plenty of trash cans, easy to get around. Some things out in the sun, which was fine but hot. I'd come back for a concert or festival- I hear the zuke fest is here.

The place was in a shopping center that seemed pretty empty but once we got inside it was like we entered another world. The place wasn't too packed and there was one worker at the front who was really sweet and patient with our group. They also allowed me to do a tour of the game area which I appreciated. There was a little something for everyone, adults and kids included. From the time we walked in we were met with room after room filled with interactive exhibits which we enjoyed. I don't want to give too much away as I don't want to ruin the surprise but I definitely recommend checking it out! The tickets were a bit pricey but after seeing everything inside I didn't feel too bad about paying so much. If you find yourself in the area, you should definitely make your way out to see them!
