I work for a construction company and manage the payroll, healthcare, dental, wc and all that other stuff. We used to have Paychex for payrool and SIF for worker's comp. Paychex was ok but dealing with the state was the biggest headache I've ever experienced (shocker, I know. I had to deal with the state for tax stuff too, and that was a total nightmare but another story all together). Afterwards we started looking for a new comp provider. Our Agent turned us on to Applied Underwriters and we had to do payroll with them too. I was not too hot on that idea (payroll) at first, but it's turned out fine for payroll AND comp. This is the absolute bottom of the barrel company. This company will go as low as it gets to get there money. Do not ever be tempted to do business with them by the promise of low rates on comp. The fees and hassle will never be worth it. After 2 month's of wrangling we had to cancel them and went with ADP again. After we cancelled they took $5000.00 as an early cancellation fee, yes they stole 5K for us trying to do business with them. Buffett should be ashamed to even be part of this unprofessional organization much less finance it. We have never been treated so poorly and then to have them steal from my family is the icing on the cake. read more

OPERATES USING A PREDATORY BUSINESS MODEL. Beware, even after you think you are done doing business with them, they will come after you for additional money which they claim you owe because of a contractual obligation. Almost 3 years after concluding business with them they have made an unauthorized debit from our checking account which they claim is allowable after the contract we signed. Call me old fashioned, but when someone takes money from you, against your will, and doesn't provide any goods or services in return, it sounds like theft. read more

My agent presented us with 3 options for comp insurance. We picked Applied because last time we went w/ a company that had a low rate but ended up going out of business (the insurance company, not us). The rates were lower than the others and they took over our payroll which was good for us - we made some errors trying to do it in-house and got audited. We had 4 claims to file this year and this company took care of business like you would not believe. No nickeling and dining and questioning everything like our claims were criminal or something. it was actually the easiest process ever and painless (well, for me, but not our workers who got hurt). It is important to know that once you sign with them - you have leased them your employees. They file your taxes under their tax ID. I have nothing good to say about their payroll service - and don't have enough time to tell all the nightmares. The workers comp is ok if you don't mind paying deductibles. If you want control over your payroll - go somewhere else. read more

These guys did OK by me. Easy to get coverage self-explanatory way of doing business. The payroll is part of the work comp coverage and we knew that going in. Anytime we had a problem we had good service from customer service or payroll or claims departments. Totally recommend them as a comp provider. read more

My experience with Applied Underwriters was good and continues. They are competitive and yes they do payroll too but we were able to dump our awful payroll company (hurrah) and work with someone who knew what they were doing. We haven't had to use their claims dept yet (knock wood). read more
