nice little mom and pop shop in central Virginia directly on the beaten path but still a…read moresignificant ways out of the way regardless. after dropping the cutest of chicks off at CLT to go to FLA I have the rest of the afternoon to try to stay out of trouble... it's just a couple hours to get here and I get to meet some new faces and go roundy round for a couple bucks. the raceway is currently housed in a simple building on highway 460 just west of Appomattox with SLOT CAR RACING spelled out in 24-inch letters. yeah, totally subtle... current tracks include road, oval, and straight line. I will generally drive the road courses when I'm out because it's all driver-vs-track with up to seven other contests going on at roughly the same time... high banks mean high speed and the Gerding King road course is both. even the main straight is tilty! thought my car was going to slide off the track when I set it down on orange; it was moving sort of slideways and hanging on the guide as I started my first lap because the tilt is that aggressive! felt totally out classed and way out of my league for a long minute... but that brief bit of uncertainty makes Mach 1 stand out for me and the need to stay fast all the way around builds character - the skill part is knowing when to "fast" and when to brake. drags and ovals are generally better with a couple other racers to taunt and tease and are usually populated by a dedicated and friendly group on race day. circle track racers are a peaceful and happy people, but like all 'cults' it can take up a good deal of your time and resources ;-) Mach 1 has what it takes to get you on the track and keep you there: they have rentals to get you started or you can pick up ready to drive or build-it-yourself cars in your choice of styles and colors, plus parts and accessories to personalize whatever it is you decide to run. I have a basic factory built that can mostly keep up. I'm not likely to win any serious competition but I'm on the track here and there and elsewhere primarily for the adventure...

Thank y'all for preserving these artifacts for the people to enjoy. I would highly recommend this place! On April 8, 1865, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia paused its march a mile from the small village of Appomattox Court House. Lee intended to resupply there before heading to Lynchburg, Virginia, and then south to Danville, Virginia. Unanticipated was the arrival of Union cavalry coming from the south under Gen. Philip H. Sheridan's command. That evening Union Brig. Gen. George Armstrong Custer successfully led some of the cavalry against the Confederate supply trains at the nearby Appomattox Station. Although shaken, Lee hoped to break through to Lynchburg the next day. On the morning of April 9, Lee ordered his cavalry, under the command of Gen. John B. Gordon, to attack Sheridan's cavalry, which had blocked the Richmond-Lynchburg Stage Road. Lee commanded an army of nearly 27,000 soldiers, which paled in comparison to Grant's force of some 63,000 troops, but he still intended to force his way through Union lines. The Confederate cavalry initially held their own and even succeeded in driving the Union horsemen from their position atop a nearby ridge. However, Gordon saw thousands of Union troops quickly approaching and sent word to Lee that his position was hopeless unless the infantry supported them. Lee's infantry, however, was engaged with Grant's Army of the James, which had approached the Confederates from the west under cover of night. Faced with no route of escape to Lynchburg, Lee agreed to negotiate terms of surrender. In a statement about her husband, Mary Custis Lee remarked that "General Lee is not the Confederacy." Her assessment was spot on, for the Confederacy still lived. Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's army--the next largest after Lee's still at war--was operating in North Carolina. Lt. Gen. Richard Taylor controlled forces in Alabama, Mississippi, and part of Louisiana. Lt. Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith's men were west of the Mississippi, and Brig. Gen. Stand Watie was in command of an Indian unit in the Far West. Nathan Bedford Forrest had men in Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi.

She has a herd of about 19 alpacas and explains everything about caring and feeding them and you get to interact with them and learn all about these fascinating creatures. Once you've gotten to know the alpacas and take them on a trail walk (yes you actually get to guide them using the halter) you can visit her store and buy all kinds of alpaca related items. This is a small farm and they keep the tour groups to just a few people. It's not some massive corporate tour so everything is very friendly and low key, not a scripted tour guide with tons of people around. You can even book the tour online via their website which is what we did. This is definitely worth the money to visit the alpacas and I'll be back again sometime.

MaryJane gave us information about her 19 alpacas and explained the care and upkeep required (including their proclivity to roll around in the dirt to keep cool). We were able to safely pet the soft alpacas under MaryJane's supervision and guidance. We then went into the store and my wife enjoyed herself there immensely. We are coming back next week four the full 2 hour tour, including walking the alpacas on the trail. This is a must-visit in Palmyra. Even though we are all seniors, the kids will love it as well!
